Here's a radical thought. Maybe men and women would get along better if companies and institutions stopped yelling about how different they are? I get it, everyone has their own opinion, and it's a sensitive topic but come on. Toilet paper for women? A cookbook for men? Some things are just absurd. And you can find them on the subreddit r/PointlesslyGendered. This online community is dedicated to collecting examples of the division between the two genders our society so desperately insists on, and over the years have gotten themselves quite a load. Here are some of the worst ones.

I Feel This Belongs Here

I Feel This Belongs Here

Possessed_Porcelain Report

Gender-tailored marketing messages are fairly common, but research shows they can have the opposite effect and repel consumers, especially women. In fact, they often backfire to the point of dissuading women from choosing a product they would have considered if the company hadn't talked about their gender so much, a study by Harvard Business School found.

The reason for this lies in human nature. People tend to resist being categorized (or made to feel like they are unwillingly reduced to a single identity) particularly when the product they're being nudged toward evokes a stereotype about their gender.

Gendering Eggs Now, Are We?

Gendering Eggs Now, Are We?

Inevitable-Ad-9256 Report

Suggesting that women will go crazy over a product wrapped in pink packaging just because some marketer assumes that all women love pink can come across as downright insulting, co-researcher Leslie K. John, the Marvin Bower Associate Professor at HBS, said.

"In a way, this project reminds me of my childhood," John explained. "When I was a kid, I had a babysitter who said, 'Leslie, your favorite color is pink.' She would put pink bows in my hair. Everything had to be pink. This project is partly a reaction against this feeling that just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I love pink! There's something very off-putting about feeling like you're being reduced to a single category of membership."

I'm only 11... luckily I have a good (new) family (I was adopted by another family after being disowned by my real family for coming out pansexual) my dad actually gave me a pocket knife for Christmas. my old family started giving me DOLLS when I explicitly told them I wanted legos.

Maybe the Aunt was implying that her niece is a girly girl (Can't think of another way to state it that won't get all of your panties/boxers in a bunch) instead of a tomboy and is not sure if makeup would be appropriate at her young age.

I got my 12 year old niece a signed football (soccer for you Americans) from her favourite team for her birthday and an electric guitar & lessons for Xmas. I got her 9 year old sister a drum kit (my uncle is a drummer and said he'll teach her). I confess my primary aim was to annoy my sister, but they did express an interest.

My stepfather gave both of my kids (one girl, one boy) pocket knives when we were visiting one summer. They both still have them, and use them. They both also have a nice fixed blade knife that they got for summer camp. Knife skills are useful for everyone. My son is better with a knife in the kitchen, though.

Drones are awesome. In my family, if you’re AFAB (assigned female at birth’ you WILL get a ‘shower wash kit’, some sort of pink clothing item, makeup and/or a ‘make your own lipgloss kit’, and if you’re AMAB (assigned male at birth) you will get a superhero tshirt, something to do with cars, and a drone. It’s not fair - I’d much rather have a drone that some makeup that I’m never going to use.

I'd like to chime in as a straight, white female. I cannot tell you how friggin' pissed off I was as a little girl when I received a different gift from my brother's identical ones. It was like I was not good enough to get what they got. It was like I was set apart - simply for being female. I can remember being apoplectically furious as early as four for being set apart because I was a girl.

Makeup and pocket knives are both useful. Military and hunters use makeup for camouflage and spies use makeup for disguise not to mention actors in theater and film all use makeup...! My mom gave my sister and I knives as kids and taught us safety and I liked to whittle. Unnecessary gendering limits possibilities and creative options!!

This reminds me of how my boyfriend gave me a pocket knife for our anniversary, because he knew that I liked them (I would hold his a lot) and that I wanted one. I made a point of not telling my parents because they thought it was weird for me, as a girl, to have one. They found out about it, weren’t happy as I predicted, but I don’t think they should be so upset because it makes me feel safe as a young female in a rough neighborhood. I don’t understand it.

But where does this false notion come from? Why do companies keep trying to sell their products by emphasizing the buyer's gender? Well, the answer to this question might lie in one 2017 Pew Research Center survey.

It discovered that Americans think men and women are basically different in the way they express their feelings, their physical abilities, their personal interests, and their approach to parenting. But there is no public consensus on the origins of these differences.
