Here's a radical thought. Maybe men and women would get along better if companies and institutions stopped yelling about how different they are? I get it, everyone has their own opinion, and it's a sensitive topic but come on. Toilet paper for women? A cookbook for men? Some things are just absurd. And you can find them on the subreddit r/PointlesslyGendered. This online community is dedicated to collecting examples of the division between the two genders our society so desperately insists on, and over the years have gotten themselves quite a load. Here are some of the worst ones.

I Feel This Belongs Here

I Feel This Belongs Here

Possessed_Porcelain Report

Gender-tailored marketing messages are fairly common, but research shows they can have the opposite effect and repel consumers, especially women. In fact, they often backfire to the point of dissuading women from choosing a product they would have considered if the company hadn't talked about their gender so much, a study by Harvard Business School found.

The reason for this lies in human nature. People tend to resist being categorized (or made to feel like they are unwillingly reduced to a single identity) particularly when the product they're being nudged toward evokes a stereotype about their gender.

Well, for heavens sake, sell them in white, blue, pink, brown with purple dots or whatever. But let the kids decide, they do not give a damn about the sexist world-view of many grown-ups. Nothing wrong, besides, with girls playing with cars and boys with dolls. Just let them as they like!

In South Africa Kinder eggs are gendered, the toy in the girl eggs usually needs no assembly while the one in the boy eggs needs assembly. I end up buying the boy eggs to get the cooler toy.

I read somewhere that the idea of the pink kinda was to provide a range where the egg was purely geared to little girls that wanted something girl orientated and the white ones contained a random toy including girly toys. It was just a matter of ensuring a better choice of options because some girls would rather have a click together fairy rather than a click together car. The mom on the other hand needs a reality slap.

What’s even sadder is that pink used to be considered a masculine color, up until the 1920s - 1930s. 100 years ago, Mom wouldn’t have cared if her son chose the pink egg. Kids are not concerned about such gender norms at his age. I say let him choose for himself. If he ends up disappointed by what’s inside the pink egg, he will most likely try different colors in the future, until he finds out which color egg will have stuff in it he likes. FFS, trial and error is how we all figure out what we like and don’t like, so cut your son some slack Mom!

Some people are just triggered by certain things and might not even realize it is a trigger. The mom has probably had or seen something happen where someone was rude about a "gendered" item, so getting mad about that might be more of a knee-jerk reaction. It's like adults that are pissy when a teen has stuffed animals. Or the mom could just be rude, idk. It's good to give the benefit of the doubt I suppose.

My elder son's favorite color when he was very young was pink. He said it was a "happy" color. If a shirt came in pink, he wanted it...AND GOT IT. He grew somewhat out of that when he was older, but he still buys pink shirts if the style he wants has it in his size. And at 6'10" tall, no one teases him about it.

We shouldn’t gender anything! I found a really nice perfume and a nice men’s cologne But when mixed, was divine! So, for two years I wore them both and got so many compliments! I loved it. And didn’t care which part was male or female. It has to do with body chemistry!!!

Also why not everyone should be allowed to have children. What toxic parenting Even if the mom held those beliefs about gender, she was making that more important than her son's tears and disappointment. A decent parent, even with those beliefs about gender, seeing her son's distress could have "allowed" the pink egg and explained that it was an exception to the rule of pink for girls. Children at those ages believe whatever the parent tells them. She could have said that was the only exception they were making. Still held her family system's toxic beliefs and showed loving compassion for her child. So easy.

I have a friend who paints faces for kids. She once had a little girl asking for a dinosaur, which my friend promptly began painting. While she's doing it, the mom starts telling this story about the *last* time she had her daughter's face painted. I guess the girl had asked to be a dinosaur that time too, but the mom had pulled the face painter aside and told them to do a butterfly instead. So this poor little girl was going around all day, happily roaring at her friends who would just look at her confused. When she got home and saw what was on her face she was just CRUSHED. So the mom learned her lesson, which I gotta give her credit for (some people would just do it again and again). But yikes. What parent does that to their child?

Yeah, that's the mom having an issue , not so much the pink egg being a problem. I think it's ok for people to enjoy stereotypically gendered toys too though. Toys are toys , I don't care who plays with what or who likes what . I've always been a girly girl , but I loved playing "guns" with my brother and his friends when we were little . I absolutely love that they make toys cars , Tonka Trucks and Nerf Guns in pink. That would've been my jam when I was little lol. When my son was three we lived in military housing and he was the only male child on our street. He wanted to push baby dolls around with his sister and the other kids , so he did. He didn't care that it was pink.

the pink eggs obviously have girly toys inside, kinder are not retarded to just turn the packaging pink for no reason. yeah downvote me all you want, most girls LIKE to play with dolls and most boys with cars.

Suggesting that women will go crazy over a product wrapped in pink packaging just because some marketer assumes that all women love pink can come across as downright insulting, co-researcher Leslie K. John, the Marvin Bower Associate Professor at HBS, said.

"In a way, this project reminds me of my childhood," John explained. "When I was a kid, I had a babysitter who said, 'Leslie, your favorite color is pink.' She would put pink bows in my hair. Everything had to be pink. This project is partly a reaction against this feeling that just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I love pink! There's something very off-putting about feeling like you're being reduced to a single category of membership."

To be fair, a lot of women could buy one-for-all but don't and the variety for "male" body care grows.

But where does this false notion come from? Why do companies keep trying to sell their products by emphasizing the buyer's gender? Well, the answer to this question might lie in one 2017 Pew Research Center survey.

It discovered that Americans think men and women are basically different in the way they express their feelings, their physical abilities, their personal interests, and their approach to parenting. But there is no public consensus on the origins of these differences.

I think marketers know this. Maybe some of them just haven't realized that to have an opinion and to base your purchasing decision on it are two different things.

This applies to other aspects, not only gender. According to previous research, for example, even stereotypes that cast people in a positive light—such as Asians excel in math—can trigger a negative reaction from these groups.

It's true, though. Holding your face together is the only thing preventing his XY-jaw from dragging along the floor, with his XY-knuckles. Plus, he has bonus nose-picking modality this way.
