I Challenged Myself To See How Far I Could Get In Trading When Starting With A Pinecone, And Here’s How It Went

Anyone out there familiar with the paper clip challenge? Well, I don’t have paper clips in my house, but I did snag a pretty nice pinecone from my kid’s school last week.

Now I am testing out the waters with my own version of the paper clip challenge. Starting with a pinecone, each trade gets a little bigger and a little better. 8 trades later, I wrap up this personal challenge with the final trade donated back to the community in an impactful way.

Here’s the pinecone I discovered, let’s start trading

After learning the story of the red paperclip challenge, I thought, well, if someone could go from a paperclip to a house, then I’m sure I could go from a pinecone to something impactful for the community. With the amount of excitement I saw in the first challenge, I am confident that the second go around, there will be even more amazing trades to be had!

The first trade was made, the pinecone was traded for a 3D-printed dragon

The 3D-printed dragon was traded for a basket of handpicked fresh Okanagan fruit

I live in Kelowna, where the cost of living has become outrageous, and more and more we are seeing an increase in the unhoused population. When I started this challenge, I connected with an outreach worker to see what would be most helpful for this community. As we are going into the winter months, she had said socks, but that is obviously a quick fix solution with a much bigger problem.

This fruit basket was then traded for high-end cleaning products

The cleaning products were traded for a variety pack of non-alcoholic beverages

I’m already getting asked when the next challenge is, because there were so many amazing people who wanted to be a part of it. The next time I do this, I do have a house as an end goal in mind. Something that I could fix up and give back to the community.

The drinks were traded for a wakeboard and a life jacket

The wakeboard and life jacket were traded for a $1000 shopping spree at a jewellery store

If I can trade into a house, I would be consulting a few local not-for-profits to see what would be most beneficial for our community, but it would 100% be going back into the community as either a low income rental, a safe space for struggling families, or something else that they decide it would be used best for.

I am sitting here with a $1000 shopping spree waiting for someone to offer me another trade

That was when the jewelry was traded in for a 3-night stay at a bed and breakfast along with ski passes to the ‘Big White Ski Resort’

With the amount of excitement I saw in the first challenge, I am confident that the second go around, there will be even more amazing trades to be had! Anyone looking to follow along in the next trade challenge can join me on my Instagram at @moderndaywonderland as this is where I connect with most people about the trades!

I shared with the community that I needed something to help keep our homeless population warm during these cold months, and to my surprise, Pudus socks have traded me $10,000 worth of slipper socks for the B&B and ski passes

I connected with an outreach worker who is currently distributing them out in the snow. She said this morning when she went to check on a few people, they had nice warm feet

I want to know why someone traded a cool 3d printed dragon for a pine cone. Could have just walked outside and picked one up, and then they'd have a pine cone AND a cool dragon toy 😝

This kind of thing is somewhat misleading. I've seen many of them and the first 1 or two trades are always really just gifts. As you said a free pine cone is nowhere near the value of a 3d printed dragon which could easily be worth a few hundred dollars. The same can be said about those paperclips. Nobody in their right mind trades anything for a paper clip.
