The bedroom is probably the most personal and intimate space where one can be the truest version of oneself. It is a place to relax from the outside world, the spot where we start and end the day. Maybe that's why it's also so intriguing to have a glimpse of other people's bedrooms. It's like getting to know their real personalities in a way.

Being interested and passionate about "poetic resonance of ordinary subjects", photographer Barbara Peacock travels the USA to take intimate and anthropological pictures of average Americans in their bedrooms. These photographs are part of a project called "American Bedroom" that shows the many different living conditions and lifestyles that make up the American experience. After taking a look at these candid photographs, we invite you to check out Barbara's older photos that we previously shared here

It's wonderful that she enjoyed her life, I hope a lot of us can say the same when the time comes.

Barbara shared with Bored Panda that the idea of photographing people in their rooms was born in 2016: "I woke up early one morning and looked out my bedroom window to look at my garden. When I turned around I saw my husband wrapped up in blankets, bathed in beautiful golden light with his snore mask on. I had to chuckle at the dichotomy of beauty and humor. Then I thought about how I would complete the scene. It was then I realized that what we have on our side tables and around the room tells a distinct and personal story."

The photographer began to think about taking pictures of people in their bedrooms across the whole country. Most of Barbara's friends said that it was a very interesting concept. She started by photographing a few friends and some interesting people she met.

This isn't "third world". Her family was one of many that lost their homes to the horrible fires in California. This picture was taken at a makeshift refugee camp set up shortly after they lost their home. They were placed in a Red Cross shelter by that night.

DennyS America is most certainly not portrayed as the “land of dreams” by the media. Wake up. America is besmirched by the media most of all. Those who hold the American Dream as a goal are those who have fought hard to be and stay here legally and know what true adversity and lack of freedom get and individual. Nothing. This child’s plight is the result of a fires A horrific result, to be certain…heartbreaking. Yet clearly not about right v. left or capitalism v. socialism. No country gives more domestically or internationally in times of crisis to those in need than America to the world be it in private sector donations, material goods, volunteerism or outreach. Do not condemn this country simply because you have the right to speak freely about our nation. I pray for this child, her family and community, but remind all of us that strength comes from challenges not material comforts.Help is coming Faith..

These people were displaced after california wildfires. When tens of thousands of people suddenly lose their homes, gettin them back into housing is very difficult. Thats y we need more funding 4 climate change related disasters! Cuz its only gonna get worse and the "right" wingers refuse to grow brains and understand that humans need 2 take DRASTIC measures NOW like we should've been since the late 1800s when the first scientist 2 talk about this, who was female, mind u, talked about how this was all gonna go down and how we could do somethin 2 stop it but no 1 listened 2 her then and pple refused 2 listen til we were in dire circumstances. When I was 7 in 1992 I was wondering why no 1 was more worried about pollution, global warming and all this stuff id read about. Adults can be idiots and now its prob 2 late 2 save our species. Wat does it take 4 these anti science pple 2 LISTEN!? Go look up y the repubs became anti environment in the late 80s.

The fire that wiped out Paradise. I had two friends living there with their children. They saw peoples cars catch on fire while the occupants were still in them, and those folks just barely making it out. My friends in fact, just barely made it out. Lost everything except their lives.

This was after the camp fire in northern California I live south of this area. I went up to a town near by to work at their Target during the fire there. Oroville is very close to Paradise so some of those people lost their houses too. Like someone commented below this was temporary shelter for the victims. The area is very rural so no hotels had room for all the people.

Agreed but these ppl were displaced with thousands of others cuz of of Cali wildfires so its pretty unavoidable when ur whole neighborhood and town burns 2 nothing and u lose every single thing u own 2 a fire. Finding new housing 4 thousands wen u have raging fires eating up whole towns worth of housing isn't a quick or easy thing. In my state, they dont allow homeless children. NJ is liberal so if ur homeless or about 2 be, chikd services will usually set u up with an apt or temp housing 4 u & ur kid but I can see y the gov cant just do that 4 everyone all the time. People woukd take advantage. My ex roommate who scammed me out of thousands of dollars and basically ruined my life was the most lazy, ungreatful, greedy, selfish, irresponsible menace on earth! Anytime she got any money shed blow it on the stupidest stuff & NEVER saved any of it 4 her kid or 4 rent or anything! Shed spend hundreds a month on cigs, pot, delivery fast food every other day eventho she had food stamps etc

You know what’s scary is the I’ve travel to three different countries, the USA not included. The “3rd world” country’s are better at everything than us. They know how to be faithful to one another, truly love, work hard for things and enjoy there life’s in peace. You guys that has never been to a 3rd world country can’t talk about anything to do with it, you don’t know anything! Believe it or not, we have WAY MORE homelessness here than any 3rd world country. You guys are greedy, rude, have high egos, want to speak about things like homelessness and not do ANYTHING ABOUT IT! You guys are selfish! I struggle white working my butt off and I still struggle…some of you don’t have to lift one finger and don’t help people, people who have nothing and try to give everything are the people you need to become. The USA has stolen from many countries and are keeping them poor! The take and take and take and never give anything bac…go to Ecuador, that’s a 3rd world country and they are happier!SMH

I’ve been knowing this for years! KNOW ONE SEEMS TO CARE, it makes me so mad! I’ve been to three different countries beside the states and I am going to move to a 3RD WORLD country! People are more caring and they enjoy there life’s so much more. It’s so difficult for anyone to say 3rd world country because you think of “war” “Proverty” “people are unhappy” “they have nothing” etc. Look they have LESS THAN US and are the happiest, hard working and caring freaking people!! Here in the states I’ve lived in 15 states and everyone is unhappy, always being rude af and you guys make the worst friends. I have a family there and was only there for three months! People are too hateful and egos are to high here. USA is the worst country in my opinion! Visit Ecuador and then tell me different! USA get a freaking brain and HELP OTHER PEOPLE! You guys are selfish! I struggle to live too and it hasn’t ever changed and I work my butt off with three jobs and still give what I can to people in need.SMH

Natural disasters are happening all over the world and it's tragic. This year in British Columbia a forest swept over an entire town burning everything in it's path, then this fall heavy rains caused flooding and mudslides washing highways and people losing their homes. Devastation and chaos happening all over with most recent events the swarm of twisters across several states killing many people. It's utterly heartbreaking.

I grew up poor and wondered why poorer kids tended to have more adornments. Is it because we think everyone can see our poverty without them out does the inability to keep from spending money on unnecessary items actually increase the odds of being poor. this is a question about the parents, not the child. i wondered in my own poor childhood. you never see Bill Gates or elon musk with extras.

If this is Oroville this family was probably displaced by fires ir second hand displaced by Wildfires. After the Camp Fire that erased Paradise, CA housing became not only almost impossible to find but far too expensive. Many a "slumlord" was born of this unfortunate tragedy & its only been exacerbated by this year's 800k plus Dixie Fire.

If you can't take Care of your kid and provide a roof or food you shouldn't have a kid. They need to be handed over to the proper authorities. This is coming from an adult who used to be a kid sleeping on a mattress in an abandoned house who ended up being abused sexually and did drugs with my own mother before age 4. Go ahead and try and tell me how women who force their kids to live the same life they are is better than a state run home or facility. NOT OKAY

It was not that easy to find people who would be willing to open their bedroom doors and be completely honest and vulnerable. Yet, to Barbara's surprise, there are plenty who would.

"When I plan a trip to a place in the US, I make an announcement on Facebook and Instagram. Many folks will reach out and say they are willing, or they have a friend, relative or neighbor. From there the contacts grow. Also, I place ads on Craigslist and I print up cards with info about the project and my contact info. I leave these cards around during my travels. I also make it a point to go to smaller towns so I can visit local diners and small shops where everyone knows everyone."

Barbara photographs everyone who wants to be in the project. That’s her rule. "You just never know how it will turn out and I meet the most interesting and diverting people. Some make me laugh and others tug at my heart and soul for days."

"Burning the tatter tots, cleaning up messes and getting the kids to school late is just part of life. Blending this big family is the hardest thing I have ever been a part of but the love and support has become the greatest gift and teacher, not just for me but for all of us."

We got curious about how the photographer manages to make people feel comfortable in front of her camera and expose their personal and intimate lives. Barbara shared that she chats with her subjects for a bit before they start. "I'm friendly and not very intimidating so it's usually easy to build a rapport. I make sure they know it is collaboration and it is their portrait as much as it is mine. I never make anyone do anything they don’t want. If my subjects are naked it is because they want to be. For many people, it is a high point in their life to show, in the most honest way possible, who they are. To take off any artifice and reveal their true nature is truly fascinating and often people just come alive."

This project has been going on for 6 years already. It's a very long period that might make it hard for people to keep being inspired. However, for Barbara, it's not like that. "Every time a door opens for me with a new subject I am completely overpowered by the newness, mystery and vulnerability of the scene. There is an aura that hangs in the air the whole time I am shooting. This is a person's life and story to be told and it is a high honor to be the one to tell it so I take it very seriously. Photography is the art form I have chosen and I am always invigorated and reborn over and over by it."

It’s as though I finally gave myself permission to chase everything unabashedly, from what I believe family looks like to the sounds I want to share with the world. The world is opening up to me more every day."

Ashley: "If you told me 5 years ago that I would be a touring musician, married to my amazing and beautiful wife, and living happily in Portland, I would have cried tears of happiness. Never give up the fight for your version of happiness in this life. You won’t know the treasures that lie ahead until you’re there living them. With our powers combined, we can do anything."

I needed this. I am 33 heading to 34 and I feel like I've missed everything and everyone around me got the express ticket while I was left at the station.

Heartbreaking, no doubt a victim of the Paradise fires. Called the Camp Creek fire, started November 2018, took 86 lives. Considered to be one of the deadliest and worst natural (I have issues with it being called natural) disasters in California history, and one of the most expensive. Caused by the local electric companies faulty electric line (the utility had been cutting corners on servicing their equipment and tree maintenance all over the State resulting in fire after fire). Many people including myself think the CEOs ought to be jailed for murder. I was privy to photos of the destruction, and it was life altering just to see the photos. I hope these victims see some fair restitution soon, it’s been waaaaay too long to continue to live homeless as a direct result of negligence from a utility company

Heartbreaking. Slab City for those who do not know, is on the outskirts of the desert southwest. It’s hell on earth. I only wish the best basics for everyone.

What a calm, nice looking room. Most of the others I've seen on here make me want to go get a tetanus shot.

It is tough. It's tougher when you are older, set in your rigid ways. Young people can build their lives together. Older people need to work extra hard to mesh their established lives, compromise on what you thought was really the right way to do things. You both really need to want it because it is so easy to just give up and stay living alone.

It never fails to equally impress and baffle me how you can always find that flag displayed somewhere even among scenes of the most abject poverty (just a guess here).
