Watch This Model Destroy A Photographer Who Suggested That She Not Eat For Two Weeks

Interview
ADVERTISEMENT

You don’t have to be a model to know that this industry is tough. Many models have spoken up about their experiences and proved time and time again that the bodies they show off in photos or on the runway are not natural. They are often achieved through hard work or even suffering.

This couldn’t be more true to a Belgian influencer who went into a photoshoot and couldn’t believe it when the photographer told her not to eat until the next scheduled photoshoot, which would have taken place two weeks later. The woman wasn’t having any of it and spoke her mind, making her go viral on TikTok.

More info: TikTok

A TikToker shared her reaction when a photographer told her not to eat for two weeks so she would look skinnier for the pictures

TikToker Thewizardliz is a 22-year-old social media influencer from Antwerp, Belgium, who posted a video that grabbed a lot of people’s attention. It now sits with 18.6 million views and 4.9 million likes, which shows that people are really supporting her stance.

In the video, we can understand that someone is talking to Thewizardliz and she is in shock from what she is hearing. When she comes back to her senses, she gives a powerful speech about how this photographer was out of line suggesting she not eat until the next photoshoot.

The video went viral with 18.6 million views because she stood up for herself in a way not everyone would feel confident enough to

If you are confused about the situation, the TikToker gives more context in an update video after receiving many questions on the viral video. Bored Panda also reached out to the influencer to ask for some details.

So everything started when Thewizardliz got reached out to by a clothing company asking if she would like to do a paid photoshoot for them. The influencer told us, “Since I have a little platform in Belgium, they sent me a DM through Instagram asking to work with me. They loved my look and style and said I would be the perfect fit.” The woman agreed and when she arrived, the photographer informed her that she would have another photoshoot two weeks later and in that time she should not eat to look skinnier for the following photoshoot.

The TikToker explained to the photographer that his words could possibly lead someone to an eating disorder or even death

The TikToker reveals that the photographer said this when the photoshoot hadn’t even started yet. The woman was taken aback by the comment and she remembers that she couldn’t say anything for a while. She guesses that it was then when her friend decided to take her phone and wait for some kind of reaction.

Thewizardliz confessed in the update video that she was kind of mad at her friend for filming her as it was a vulnerable moment for her. In an Instagram post, the woman revealed that she actually suffered from an eating disorder, so what she said was coming from the suffering she had to deal with.

The influencer also mentioned that she is not a model and doesn’t aspire to be one, and when we asked if she would ever do other photoshoots with different brands and photographers, here is what she had to say: “I do not ever want to model again. I never aspired to be a model exactly for this reason.”

Not only did she explain how impactful words can be to other people, but she refused to continue with the photoshoot and just left

At first, the TikToker didn’t want to post the video as she later thought that maybe she reacted too harshly; however, in the end, she decided to post the video anyway as she believed that it would help someone else. As she said in the viral video, she is confident in herself now, but what if those words were said to a more insecure person?

She wrote this on her Instagram addressing the situation: “I am beyond shocked by all the love and support I received for this video. I really didn’t want to post it cause I felt like I might have reacted too harshly… but I am not doing this for me. I’m doing it for my younger self who developed an ED cause of people like this who constantly told me what and when I should or shouldn’t eat. I am doing this for every girl/boy out there who has suffered or is still suffering from an ED, for everyone who has been put down and didn’t feel comfortable speaking up.”

She also made her followers aware that the company who hired the photographer denied his services

The influencer also added that she didn’t think that the video would go viral. As mentioned, she didn’t even want to post it at first. But then she changed her mind because “so many people go through things like this, not only models. People in general get comments on what or when they should eat. If they should eat at all… it happens all the time: a partner, family member, friend… this can spiral into such a dangerous eating disorder or body dysmorphia and it’s just unacceptable. We have to stand our ground, otherwise people will walk all over us. If you find yourself worthy, the world will find you worthy. Never settle for anything that does not align with your values.”

The woman herself has had an ED, so the situation was really triggering to her, which may explain the heated reaction

In the update video and in the Instagram post, Thewizardliz also informed her followers that the company immediately called her to apologize for the photographer’s words and that they think she is beautiful and perfect for them. Actually, the company knew the woman’s measurements in advance as they had asked her to send them. They asked if she would still do the photoshoot with another photographer, but the woman refused. The next morning, she got another call from the clothing company and they announced that the photographer was fired.

You can check out the video of Thewizardliz’s speech here

How would you react if someone said to you that you would look better for the next photoshoot if you didn’t eat until then? What do you think about the TikToker’s response to the photographer and do you think he got what he deserved? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

People in the comments were overwhelmingly supportive and didn’t think that the TikToker overreacted in the situation

These words are toxic but the thoughts themselves are so damaging. I look at a woman like that who is by most societal standards beyond gorgeous and someone is telling her she needs to starve herself for two weeks to be skinnier? You hear that and think if she's considered too fat to be attractive how could you ever be considered attractive the way that you are, which is no where near her "level." That sort of attitude trickles down to everyone and it's very hurtful.

I wonder what the photographer was telling, though… even if her reaction might fitted perfectly the situation, I never heard what he initially told, or what he was trying to say during the video, and I don’t think that judging about the situation by listening to only one side of the conflict is smart… now you can crucify me for not supporting the girl🤣

I will always support the girl because this is exactly how these photographers talk. I'm a fashion stylist and have been working on shoots for the last decade or so. I also used to be a lot skinnier at the start of my career and I had great facial bone structure. Often, at shoots where I was styling, I was told I would be a good subject to photograph, I laughed it off because I wasn't interested and I'm just about 5 feet 4 inches. Not exactly model height. One photographer even told me "if you lose 5-7 kilos, I'll photograph you for free." I guess he thought it was a compliment, but it just angered me and put me off. Also, the woman he was photographing that day (not a model) was making a portfolio because she wanted to join the film industry. I was already skinnier than her at that point and I could tell his words affected her also.

If someone ever tried to tell me not to eat FOR TWO WEEKS before they take my picture, I would immediately tell them that is NOT going to happen, and that they should just learn how to be a better photographer. If you can’t take a good picture of me as I am, then you’re a pretty shitty photographer, and should reconsider your career choice. After saying that, I would proceed to chew them a new one. Maybe two.

It depends entirely on how much body fat you have, as as body fat is literally excess calories your body creates for periods of starvation. 1Kg of body fat contains 7700Kcals, so you can survive a surprising amount of time on excess body fat. An average person could survive 70 days on 20Kg of excess body fat with no problem, and still be alive and a healthy weight after that time. That's why people struggle to lose weight.

Of course saying this to anybody would be cause for immediate termination, but I'm questioning this whole story. Doesn't add up. She's described as both a "model" and "influencer" which is weird, but ok fine. And then we get to the part where it says "At first, the TikToker didn’t want to post the video as she later thought that maybe she reacted too harshly" - I'm supposed to believe this is the thought process of a self-proclaimed influencer? Not buying. If this whole thing wasn't staged, at least a few details here are... let's say "embellished". EDIT: I'll once again say that if this is real, then of course I agree with her response and her message 100%. I'm just having a hard time believing it all as presented.

She is an influencer. NOT a model. Yes, what was said was wrong, but if the company had paid for a proper model, they would have had the experience and know-how on how to deal with this, should the same thing happen. All we see is one snippet, not the whole conversation. I repeat she is NOT a model, hence her remark about him "only" being a photographer! A true model would trust and be professional about someone they would collaborate with. She was out of her depth.

If more models stood up to photographers that made comments like this, to anyone, then more women and young girls would have better self and body esteem! Also realizing what some models do to remain stick thin! Models self esteems, need to become strong , stronger to support other women! I am positive women enter modeling with fairly good self esteem. But designers,,agents and photographers get ahold of them, and verbally knock them down. Then train them to be sticks.. to wear my designs. To represent our name, you need to be stick thin. Stop! You are ruining our young women, traumatizing them for life. Nothing in the world is worth this. EVER..

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Sadly this is so common in dance. Dancers put their bodies through hell. Starved and dehydrated to the point of no longer being able to have a period and experiencing organ failure. I wish dance was about technique and skill, but I have seen people with less skill get leads because they look so skinny. It is so wrong to do this to people and crush their dreams and love of dance. I'm am truly sorry you went through this. No one should ever have have this happen to them.

I know some contracts will have it agreed that they are paid at least something to just show up. I hope word gets around and makes it very hard for this photographer to get jobs. It seems like he works for a studio, I hope the studio takes action and fires him completely. I know the clothing co said he was fired, I hope he was, I hope he no longer works for them and is just not allowed to shoot for this company.
