They say revenge is best served cold, but it’s also best served by someone who knows us very well. And who knows us better than our beloved fur babies?

We love our pets unconditionally and work hard to give them the best lives possible, spoiling them with delicious treats, long walks and the most comfortable beds. But just like any child who’s been denied dessert or bitter ex-romantic partner, our pets are capable of plotting devious acts of revenge upon us. From destroying furniture to going potty where they know they shouldn’t, we’ve gathered some of the coldest examples of animal revenge down below, as well as an interview with Dr. Megan E. Maxwell, PhD, a Board Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist .

Be sure to upvote the photos you can’t help but laugh at and those that feature animals you find particularly brilliant, and allow this list to serve as a reminder that your precious pet is capable of being extremely petty. So the next time Spot begs for a treat or demands you let him outside after midnight, don’t be surprised if he retaliates when you say no. You’ve been warned…

Then if you’re interested in checking out another Bored Panda article featuring just how intelligent our beloved animals are, look no further than right here!

If you’re a pet owner, you likely know that our furry (or scaly, feathery, etc.) friends can be extremely smart. They learn how to communicate with us without using words, and we find ways to understand one another’s emotions. But this intelligence can come back to bite us when our pets realize that we don’t always give them what they want. Sure, accidents happen, and especially when pets are young, they have a lot to learn. But the hilarious photos on this list seem to be a bit more like calculated revenge than honest mistakes.

To gain more insight on our naught pets and whether or not their actions that we perceive as revenge are intentional, we reached out to Board Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist Dr. Megan E. Maxwell, PhD. While this article is all in good fun, we wanted to know if our pets are actually capable of plotting revenge against us (and if they are, should we be worried?).

Lucky for all of us, Dr. Maxwell told Bored Panda that no, animals don’t consciously seek revenge. “To really carry out vengeful behavior, you need to be able to picture the future and find pleasure in the future misery or suffering of others,” she explained. “For our pets, this is much too complicated. Nonetheless, we see behavior from our pets all the time that LOOKS like revenge, but this is only because we humans put our own motivations onto pet behavior sometimes.” We shouldn’t be projecting our own emotions onto others, so let’s not do it on our pets either!

Dr. Maxwell also provided some possible explanations for why our animals might seem vengeful. “Most dogs and cats engage in destruction in the house either due to boredom and the natural enjoyment that comes from chewing things, or due to anxiety either from being home alone or from any changes that may have occurred in the pet's life that cause stress,” she noted.

To try to prevent our pets from seeking revenge (or appearing like that’s what they’re after), Dr. Maxwell provided some advice. “We should teach our pets how to be home alone calmly, and be sure to provide plenty of appropriate things for our pets to destroy to meet their chewing needs.” She also recommended trying to get to the bottom of why they are displaying destructive behavior, because it’s not actually to seek revenge. “For example, be sure all of the pet's basic needs are met, including plenty of exercise, enrichment, basic training, and socialization,” Dr. Maxwell told Bored Panda.

I would not bathe a full grown cat. Because I want to live. Seriously, I just had a cat that had surgery and had to wear a cone collar for over a week. He couldn't clean his butt and the best I could do was use wipes, which were not very effective. But he made it clear the one time that I dragged him to the bathtub that it just wasn't going to happen!

Thankfully, our dogs and cats aren’t as vengeful as humans often are, but they are intelligent enough to feel other emotions that might lead to them partaking in destructive behavior, including jealousy. Paul Morris, PhD, a psychologist and animal behavior expert at The University of Portsmouth in England found that dogs will consistently push in between themselves and their “rivals” to compete for attention. “All we can do is look at behavior and context,” Dr. Morris says. “Both the behavior and the contexts observed are consistent with current scientific definitions of jealousy. I suspect that a highly social species such as the dog has a very developed repertoire of social emotions.”

Our cat follows me around when I am at home. My wife is at home all day, every day. If I go out to do work in the garden - cat; making the bed - cat; preparing/cooking food - cat; on this pc..... cat. If I go talk to my wife, the cat gets jealous and starts bumping me and talking to me. When I come home from work, she is patiently waiting for me. She ignores my wife most of the time.

If you’re wondering why your dog might be acting a bit off, it can be useful to be able to spot the signs of jealousy in your fur baby. They might start displaying signs of aggression towards whomever they’re jealous of, display attention seeking behavior, start sulking or even withdraw from you. If you notice this behavior in your pet and it’s unusual, your animal might be feeling insecure. To combat these negative feelings, it can be helpful to maintain routines for your dog. “Think back to what your schedule and habits were like before the new pet or person was introduced, and, whenever possible, try to reestablish that pattern,” The Dog Daily writes.

If an animal is jealous, they might just need some extra love and affection to remind them how much you care. Give them an extra treat, take them to the park more often, and spend plenty of time playing with them. Just like humans, dogs need to be shown they are loved sometimes. It can also be useful to reinforce your dog’s basic training if their jealousy is turning into destructive patterns. “You must remain the leader, so gently show your dog who is boss by verbally scolding negative behavior as soon as it starts,” The Dog Daily says. “At the same time, reward positive behavior with sweet talk, head rubs, and treats, especially if your dog makes an effort to socialize with your new pack member.”

It can also be important to empathize with our pets rather than assuming they’re trying to seek revenge against us. For example, separation anxiety can be a cause for some of the behavior featured on this list. “Factors which can precipitate a separation anxiety problem include a change in the family’s schedule which result in the dog being left alone more often, a move to a new house, the death or loss of another family pet, or a period at a boarding kennel,” MSPCA explains on their site. “Separation anxiety may manifest by excessive vocalizations or house-soiling, along with destructive behavior. These behaviors are not motivated by spite or revenge, but by anxiety, and punishment will make the problem worse!”

MSPCA also notes that regardless of what your pets have done, it’s important to never be too hard on them. “Punishment alone rarely is effective in resolving destructive behavior problems and can make them worse,” they write. “Punishment after the fact is never appropriate. When punishment is indicated, the goal is not to punish the animal, but the behavior. This can never be accomplished with punishment after the fact. For assistance in resolving destructive and other behavior problems, once medical problems have been ruled out by your veterinarian, contact a certified applied animal behaviorist.”

Not axiomatically true. Many times corvids are intelligent enough to harass and bully other animals, including cats, humans, and other birds. You have no idea whether or not the birds were defending a nest or eggs. They very well could have been doing nothing, and the cat is simply behaving naturally.

I don’t know how people are describing birds that see a predator in their territory as jerks for trying to drive it off. Domestic house cats are an invasive species in most of the world, and do immense damage to local wildlife. I used to think it was cruel to keep cats inside, that it was “natural” for my well-fed childhood house cat to come home with a new dead animal every two or three days, and that it was also “natural” that cats just got sick, or eaten by coyotes, or run over by cars. Where I live now, no one in my immediate neighborhood lets their cats out. Their cats are safe and healthy inside, and the bird population around us is thriving.

I replied with this to someone’s post…but for those that miss it… Humans are the #1 invasive species on this earth. We have caused the extinction of hundreds, & are currently putting more than 1 million species at risk. So before we start blaming cats, we should look at ourselves. Our own apathy & greed are destroying this planet.

Just because we as a species do the most damage doesn't mean we should allow another, similarly invasive species do similar damage. Cats are domesticated and belong inside or in a barn. Feral and outdoor cats are issues, barn cats do a job and indoor cats are friends.

My own experience, our (usually) docile kitty would hang out in our yard. Never ventured further, was loving to her humans and dog. For whatever reason, the birds began to attack her. She put up with it for about a week, finally snapped and killed one of the birds, whose companions completely left the kitty alone after that. Everyone, human or feline, has a breaking point. Even the sweet ones. And I agree, keep the cats indoors.

This is why your cats need to stay indoors and get fixed because those birds build low nests and will get hunt into extinction by cats like the many, many other birds cats have offed due to people's irresponsible pet keeping.

There's a lot of hate going on in these comments. I let my cats outside when they want but always bring them in at night due to coyotes but in my entire adult life my cats have only killed three birds. First one I got mad because he didn't eat it so the next one he tried to eat without plucking it so he barfed it back up. He never killed another. My other cat has only killed one but he ate it. Where I am there are plenty of rodents in the fields so they don't need to kill birds. Also I'm not sure cats are getting complete nutrition from what we feed them. My black cat eats many rodents and cat food and she has the healthiest coat.

If you feed them almost any food you buy, then yes, they are getting all their nutritional needs. Cat and dog food makers are legally required to provide the proper nutrients for animals to live healthily. Feeding your cat or dog Blue Buffalo or something like it only serves to help your own conscience.

I can't with all people getting butthurt over the dead bird and saying cats should stay indoors. I agree that it's better and safer for domestic cats to stay indoors, but this very well might be a stray cat as it doesn't have a collar so stop blaming a potentially non existent owner for a cat doing a great job and a bird being dumb enough to get caught.

Ahh yes, it "might" be a stray. Definitely reason enough to behave like an unresponsible pet owner. Cats do, not might, kill many, many rodents and birds throughout their lifetime if they are allowed to roam freely outdoors. This "prove a negative" stuff needs to be nipped in the bud, immediately.

My cat would drag magpies the same size as her though the cat flap... then they would be trapped alive inside my house. Madam would be very pleased with her 'gift' and the mess it would make. Bloody jerk.

This is victim blaming. Cats should not run free. It is obsene that they get feed well, sleep warm have Full medical care, and than let out, to go kill millions of birds every day. My cat does not go out, at all.

My hubby let my 6 week old kitten outside when i was out at my mums house, came home and there was no Sooty. When i asked him where she was he said i let her outside for a bit, i asked how long ago he said oh no it was hours ago. When i went out side there were 5 magpies ragging her she never made it they killed her, i didn't speak to him for a whole 9 months to teach him a lesson.

I love cats. So for many reasons I don't think they should be outdoors. Just look at the lost animal postings and there are overwhelmingly more cats than dogs reported dead by the side of the road among many other dangers. And the birds........

In this whole post on pets being jerks, there’s like one rabbit, a handful of dogs and the overwhelming majority are cats. So very accurate representation here.

I had a long-haired black cat for 19 years. When we lived in Alabama, he went outside we lived out in the country. He didn’t come home that night. He didn’t come home the next morning so I went looking for him. He was huddled at the bottom of a tree and magpies or divebombing him. My poor little baby. I walked over and picked him up. he wrapped his paws around my neck, and he never wanted to go back outside again! It’s one thing to defend your territory it’s another thing to be a bully! Lol.

People should keep their cats inside for their own safety. Around here the coyotes eat cats and any other small animal.

One of our cats is an inside/outside cat. Since we got her as a kitten, she has wanted nothing more than to be outside. Anytime we would walk near a door she would rush to it, stand on her hind legs with her front paws on the door, turn her head back to us & howl bloody murder for hours. She hates using litter boxes, & will only go outside at the very back of our property. Fast forward 13.5 years, she’s still alive & well. She has “street” smarts. Some cats don’t. Those are usually the ones that don’t make it. Yes, she catches wildlife at times. But I always check over every animal she brings home. If it can be saved, I do so. When she was 3, she lead me to 2 baby abandoned opossum. She never hurt them. I cared for them on the weekend until the local wildlife rehabilitation centre opened the following week. They had fly eggs all over their bodies. Which meant using a fine toothed comb. They were pleasantly easy to care for. I carried them around in my fleece housecoat pockets.

☹️😭 We are also bird lovers. Our kitty has a fenced in Outdoor play area. When we feed the birds in winter, she must watch them through windows until later in morning. Surprisingly, she sits on porch and watches them. Now let some squirrels climb the fence and intrude, she chases them immediately. They sit in the trees on the other side screeching and whining because no seed for them.

That bird was defending its nesting territory. He is a parent, and his chicks cannot survive without him. The mother bird can't keep up with the chicks' needs for food by herself. It takes two parents to feed them. The loneliest sound in the world is the crying and crying of the widowed parent as it circles the area calling out for its mate.

A pair of rows built a nest on our neighbours property, which gave us the perfect view. I could tell when the she laid her eggs because of the care they took when by the center of the nest. Unfortunately, I also witnessed some horrible stuff. The father was out looking for food while the mother protected the eggs. Another crow was flying overhead, did a sharp turn & attacked the female. It looked like he was trying to mate with her, but honestly, I felt like I witnessed a rape. The horrible sounds she made while being attacked are still in my mind. But she eventually fought him off & chased him away. Sadly, during the attack, some of the eggs were damaged. When the make came back, they both grieved together. & comforted one another. It was very emotional. When the left over egg(s) hatched they celebrated in such a gentle manner. Both were on either side of the nest, looking down in the center, & gently cooing to their offspring. Only one survived to adulthood. Saw them all 2 days ago

There is a lot of personal bias in many of the comments. First up: cats are domestic and therefore “belong indoors”. Actually, the definition of domesticated animals are ones that have adapted to living alongside humans. That doesn’t translate as living permanently inside. Countries such as Japan and Turkey have large “stray” populations of domesticated cats. Secondly: it’s dangerous for cats to be outside at night. That depends on location. There are no predators of cats in many countries and they are safe outside. Thirdly: cats are the biggest predators of birds. Again, not true in every country and, in some countries, it’s not an issue if the native bird population can cope with a level of predation. As it happens, cat predation is a problem in my country (NZ) but there are many other challenges for native birds as well. I offset any impact of my cats by creating a native garden to support the birds and the local bird population has increased as a result.

This is what happens when cats are allowed outside, prolific damage can be caused by these arch hunters. I love my cats but they stay inside . The magpies will remember that cat.

If anyone disagrees about cats being outside because of the danger to birds, then please think about the dangers being outside offers to cats. Veterinarians and others who are knowledgeable about such things will tell you that outside cats are vulnerable to diseases, predation from other animals, fighting with other cats, being run over, being hurt by cruel humans - of which there are many unfortunately - being stolen by other humans, or being sickened or dying from ingesting bad food or poisons. If you feel cats deserve outside time take them out on a cat leash or provide them with a cat enclosure that other creatures can't open. We did this every day with our cat and over time he learnt the boundaries so we could take him for a walk out into the garden without a leash but always with one of us.

trust me, i like cats..but, they are exc. hunters and murder millions of birds and small animals every year....if you own one you must take responsibility and help prevent these actions. Feral cats have to hunt to survive but...domestic ones don't.

When ours goes outside, I hear the birds, mainly long-tailed meadowlarks and the occasional sparrow, shouting "CAT! CAT!" It is the only time they shout this one particular bird-word. She is not especially interested in catching them as she is primarily engaged in decimating the rodent population. She has rarely brought me a bird.

Not magpies, magpies are bigger. These little birds love to dive bomb cats and will tease them without mercy. Sad to see one killed though.

It's cute when a cat does it but they want your dog put down for the same thing ( especially when the dog has their cat!)

And the cat was just being a cat. Completely natural. Cats actually domesticated themselves, not the other way around.

At this point, it's almost guaranteed to die. Cat scratches and the bacteria associated with them and bites will kill a bird very quickly.
