PETA Asks People To Use Alternatives To Animal-Oriented Insults But Gets Ridiculed In Return
There’s probably no one who wouldn’t recognize the PETA logo… or the level of vitriol that usually follows it. As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and this animal-loving company certainly lives up to the expectation. And whether this will surprise you or not, PETA is at it again. The often-problematic organization delved right into another deep end, this time somewhat echoing itself when it comes to policing speech and trying to find issues where none exist. Previously, the organization wanted people to stop using phrases that involve animals (the story has been covered by Bored Panda before), and now PETA seems to find issue with the preconceptions of animal names in the English language.
PETA criticized speciesist language and wants people to stop using animals as insults

On paper, it seems like a good and valid point (hear me out here before grabbing pitchforks!). Insulting someone purely because of preconceptions without any merit shouldn’t be considered normal, so it’s a good idea to stop, isn’t it? However, PETA chose to fight the wrong fight, so to speak. According to them, people shouldn’t be called by animal names because it degrades the animal. PETA also argues that such language underlines the superiority of man.
The organization claims that using anti-animal slurs normalizes violence against animals

PETA claims that when you call someone a “snake” or a “pig,” you degrade the animal by giving them negative human-oriented traits. However, since that’s not how language works, their argument is shaky at best. Our definitions come from centuries-old past, when our descriptions came from what was around us. This is not a new thing, and if anything, the connotation of the word is based on the animal itself (which, sure, may have changed over time), not the other way around.
PETA is resolute that such language harms animals by presenting inaccurate facts about them
While the descriptions that are often attached to animals can be inaccurate at times, it’s important to keep in mind that language is not a fluttery thing that shifts with the wind. While certain connotations might be outdated or even factually inaccurate, they can be considered hyperbole—no one thinks that snakes are truly spies in disguise, but from the old times, they were associated with trickery, and it’s unlikely that if we stop referring to a traitorous person as a “snake,” the larger image of this animal will be impacted, since there’s a historic root that it stems from.
PETA wants the world to leave the “outdated mindset” of animal name-calling behind
Here’s where they trip themselves—not only are they implying that calling people by animal names can be comparable to hate speech, there’s another issue of good connotation they missed. For example, “fox” is considered to be a good descriptor (e.g. smart like a fox). If we get rid of all the animal-associated descriptors from our language, we have to remove the good ones too—doesn’t that count as erasure of animal virtues? Point is, PETA overshot a bit with their attempt, which—while not entirely devious—is certainly ruffling some feathers.

Share on FacebookThe problem with PETA is, they will try to change the most trivial things, like the way people play animal crossing or the logo on an animal cracker box, but they will euthanize thousands of animals. It's like if someone during the Holocaust said they were trying to help Jews who were being mistreated, but all they did was talk about how to stop using 'anti-Jew' language and how everyone should treat the yellow star with respect. It truly doesn't make sense. PETA has done some good things though, like rescuing certain animals, but the sheer number of animals they've killed (more than 40,000) kinda outweighs that. In the words of Obi-Wan-Kenobi, "You have become the very thing you swore to destroy."
PETA nuts have downvoted the people with brains (you and co.). I am helpeth.
Load More Replies...The final straw for me where PETA was concerned was when they posted a picture of a bloodied sheep and insisted that this was what sheep look like after they're sheared. You can see sheep shearing online, you can go to agricultural fairs and see sheep being sheared, and IT DOESN'T LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THAT!!! They're pink and bald for a while, that's it.
Yeah, and I’m pretty sure they had a “leather factory” worker cut a cow open alive, when it was just a peta worker(?) or follower.
Load More Replies...What an absolute load of garbage, it’s PETA, so it shouldn’t really be a shocker. It’s stupid and ridiculous, the two things PETA is good at.
What about mass animal genocide (Maya the dog.)? PETA's also pretty good at being hypocritical (no-kill mouse traps.) and ableist (milk causes autism campaign.) too. And overreactive (WH40k controversy.). And disrespectful (Steve Irwin fiasco.). And apparently has no value of human life (literally comparing the life of a little girl to a rat, i sh*t you not. one shall not be considered sh*tted.). Oh, and also they plagiarize (Pokémon Black-Blue.) and spread misinformation (Super Tofu Boy.).
Load More Replies...Ugh... I loathe to agree with PETA because they are idiotic beyond comprehension, but the point they are making is being lost in their inability to express it. -- The fact that animals "can't be offended" is not the point. This misunderstanding of prejudice can be seen in the way we treat fellow humans... so I get my back up when I see people making this fallacy -- The problem isn't how the animal would feel, the problem is how it makes PEOPLE feel about the animals. For example, calling someone a "bird brain" perpetuates the myth that birds are dumb, and while many of them are, some aren't. Crows and Parrots are actually smarter than Dogs. -- So in this example, the problem would be: "oh, it is just a crow, no need to care about it, it is a dumb bird", which could be harmful to the bird. But if you realize that crows are surprisingly self aware, and have the reasoning ability of a 7 year old... you might feel more compassion for their wellbeing.
People aren't missing the point. They're just sick and tired of being told that everything is offensive.
Load More Replies...And factually incorrect. They said snakes have families. No. They don’t. They feel no affection for anything. When kept as pets, they can feel affinity for their owners as a non-threatening creature that feeds it, and provides warmth. That’s it. They are also purely solitary, except for garters, who love to interact with other garters. Garters seem to have affinity for their mates as well, but they’re the only species who feel affinity for mates, and possibly love for their owners. But at the end of the day, they’re still snakes, they only have: Hunger, Tiredness, stress, heat, shelter. That’s it. They’re also not that smart, there’s a video of a black mamba trying to eat it’s poop.

I'm trying so hard not to laugh at this. I'm eating... chicken....and I'm like "if I laugh it'll fly out of my mouth and then no more chicken... I mean coward. uhm, PETA? This isn't goign to work...."
PETA is such a great example of people looking to be "woke". They are starting some extreme animal right cause to make it seem like they are above the average joe. They know something we dont. They are saints and here is why blah blah blah. Its quite pathetic really.
I thank PETA for educating me on how to not discriminate against animals. I realize that their lives matter so much more than those of humans, so from now, I won't care at all what those nasty two-legged creatures do to each other. regardless of their skin/fur/feather/scale color, I shall treat every species with the utmost respect. if you couldn't tell, everything above is 100% sarcasm. I think we should treat animals humanely since God told us to be good stewards of the earth...but this is way too far.
"I'll eat flesh of the coward and the repulsive". Damn, that's sound badass
I'll start listening to PETA about animal welfare when they stop killing animals.
I was born and raised on a horse farm that bred Tennessee Walking Horses. Our horses were very well cared for. And I felt like they knew it. So much so, that when members of PETA broke into the barn and released horses, those horses ran up and down the fence line to get back in.
Everything that is meant to increase positivity is demeaned and hated. Calling someone a human is the worst insult. Your derision of PETA's concept just highlights their point exactly. Words have great power and these responses show a lack of intelligence and insight. "Treated like a dog" comes to mind. As if it is ok to treat a dig badly but, not a human. Perfect example os speciesism.
We have so much craziness going on in the world right now and this is what PETA has chosen to be upset about? I am more upset about the over 400,000 Americans who have died of Covid. I am more upset about the people who died during the insurrection. I am more upset about the fact that these people use animals to make money rather than actually helping them. Instead of this nonsense, PETA could do more than worry about the phrases we use.
Instead of PETA say coward Instead of PETA say snicth INstead of PETA say jerk Instead of PETA say repulsive and finally istead of PETA say lazy bicthes
See people this is why in my book PETA stands for "People Eat Tasty Animals"
This is one of the very best by Peta but it's also OLD. I've seen it several times and for real PETA published this trash. Some how it has been republished in the wake of the racist malarkey to maybe try to equate it as such. They are slithery little beasts riding on the backs of black and brown in stead of horses... They may as well also hold the whips that beat slaves because they are trying to take attention off of that issue and put it on this bullshit.
PETA shouldbe disbanned. Never seen such a bunch of hypocritical idiots. I am one that only donates to animal related charities... and I despise PETA
Ah yes, because animals totally understand language and have the brain capacity to understand the mythical 'speciesism.'
It was PETA supporters at Trader Joes a few years back holding signs that said "Milk Was Murder" another with the face of a cow saying "I want to live". First off - we don't kill cows for their milk you stupid m***********g morons, it's called "milking" for a reason, look it up. Secondly - we don't eat cows, we eat the delicious flesh of steers, which are castrated bulls and raised for beef. Does no one understand that not all cattle are "cows"? One of the weirdest kids movies I ever saw was "Barnyard" were the two MALE bovines had udders. On what f*****g planet????
Going on a limb here... Shifting our use of words is powerful. Not an animal rights activist myself, but I do hate cruelty of any kind. And anyone who’s studied genocide and war knows that dehumanizing language— using animal words for people—is a key step toward abusing and slaughtering them. So let’s say what we mean and call out bad behavior—calling someone a pig or a chicken is never a good opener for a discussion. Maybe we can be just a little less polarized, hear each other just a little better, avoid a war or two and, yes, be kinder to the animals we rely on.
Ohh I am so relieved I'm not the only one that thinks this is dumb as hell!
I guess Bored Panda had better come up with a new name now. Bored Black and White Thing?
I am definitely against cruelty to animals big and small, (except spiders. And cockroaches. Ew.) But seriously?? I agree we both have feelings, and fears, and both can feel pain and love, but c'mon; you mean to tell me that if I call someone a "PIG", that the entire PIG race will be upset? Jeez. I think PETA is just fishing for views on twitter. OOPS! Am I allowed to say "fishing?" I don't want to offend a damn fish. Oh, and I love the computer generated response that they have, by the way.
One of those times I like what PETA did. Consider what it does to the chinese zodiac: 2020 was the Year Of The Snitch. My brother was born (and remains!) a Jerk. My boss is a Coward. [Also interesting that Chinese connotations to these animals are almost all COMPLETELY DIFFERENT to PITA's version.]
Dehumanizing language is terrible for humanity anyway. It’s showing up more in our politics. Not everyone who used this language commits physical violence but those who could commit physical violence use this language. It’s the language of war criminals, human traffickers and white supremacists to name a few. If want to change the world, change how you think and what you do. A great place to start is by changing how you think and talk about yourself and other people. (And maybe about animals too)

Load More Replies...Naw. Humans can just think more than (most) animals, but that doesn't make them superior. I mean morally superior - of course in terms of killing, humans are the boss. Humans are just as much mammals as a chimp or a chipmunk. I don't agree with PETA on anything, but don't make us into something bigger/higher/better just because we can learn more things. Also, animals don't give a sh*t about dignity. It's a human construct, they don't care. As long as their needs and comforts are provided, they'll be happy. That includes living-conditions for chicken to meet their nature as well as snakes having their ecosystems ensured. A donkey will not care about me calling someone an ass when he's happily munching on his grass with his donkey-friends. So this PETA-post is dog-crap and bovine waste

(And maybe about animals too)
Love how someone calls it 'appropriating' as if someone owns the idea that words mean things
Bing Bunny claimed metaphors in the early 1600s.
Load More Replies...Just when you thought PETA couldn't get sillier than their campaign against Mario for "cruelty against turtles"...
Or their fear that children will start skinning the forest's beasts all Watership Down style because some leaf turns Mario into a testicle raccoon.
Load More Replies...Are people really this stupid, I find it offensive to be called human since humans are the stupidest life forms on this planet animals are smart humans are just plain idiots.
I don't agree with PETA but the comments here and replies just make me sick
Load More Replies...I love animals as much as the next meat consuming person, and I refuse to order repulsive tenderloin next time I go to a restaurant when this virus is through.
Eh. I'll have a bacon sandwich, i guess. Pigs are cute but bacon is tasty. And carcinogenic in large enough quantities.
Load More Replies...Oh we get it, we just think it is bloody stupid.
Load More Replies...Please kindly park your ass into a Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka and fly into Sagittarius A*, or i will personally scrape your face off with a toothbrush and shove it so far down your throat you'll be seeing the Magic School Bus. I will rain vaguely Art Deco fury down upon you with precision the likes of which have never been seen before on this mortal plane. TL;DR: Thou art ded, childe.
Load More Replies...Well, you might not like bacon, and that's fine. But i like bacon.
Load More Replies...From what could be derived from your abhorrently grammatically poor sentence, I understood that you questioned the intelligence of PETA. Perhaps, if you want to be taken seriously/understood, you should consider attending a second grade English class. While I agree with the sentiment that could be understood, I regret that I cannot commiserate with you, or, however unlikely, disagree with you, on the remainder of the sentence. I would recommend, for the future, that if you shall question the mental capacity of others, to ensure that your own, is (at least at a cursory level), without blemish.
