New Jersey Passes New Law That Requires Pet Stores To Sell Only Rescue Animals

New Jersey Senate has just passed a bill that hopefully will have a significant impact on how pets are purchased and will help crack down the cruel puppy mill industry. According to The Humane Society, there are at least 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S. today. They produce more than 2.4 million doggies a year — and less than 3,000 of those are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Approximately 3.9 million of abused animals enter pet shelters every year with 1.2 million of them being euthanized.

“These puppy mills have gained a notorious reputation for putting profits ahead of the humane treatment of dogs and cats,” says Senator Raymond Lesniak who introduced the bill. “Their mass breeding has created inbred health and behavioral problems and the animal abuse have left too many of these pets to suffer from neglect and mistreatment.”

Representatives of the pet industry argue that the bill will make it difficult for new pet stores to open. They also say it will limit consumer choices and make it challenging to find a perfect family dog choosing only from rescue puppies.

ADOPT! Rescue pets are wonderful animals. I think buying that puppy mill "pure bred" says more about you than it ever would about your dog. I hope other states follow New Jersey soon!

All my 7 cats were adopted, one was even a feral one that was quickly tamed by good food and the promise of a place on my bed (or maybe I was the one tamed? ^_^ ). And I confirm that yes, they are wonderful animals.

I haven't been in a pet store that sells pets other than fish and small animals in twenty years. I didn't realize other states still sold bred animals in pet stores. Twenty years ago, we got a dog and a cat from a pet store several months apart. Both had serious health problems. We have had a myriad of rescue animals since then, none of which has had health problems. If you feel you must buy an animal rather than adopt, you really should go to where they are bred and observe conditions before you make the purchase.

Now THAT is the biggest first step towards ending the ongoing massacre of millions and millions of cats and dogs via unregulated rampant breeding by greedy, ignorant humans. They ho have NO CLUE whatsoever about healthy, successful breeding, the disastrous results of constant inbreeding, nor do they give a damn. All they want is the money. And that also applies to the millions and millions of backyard breeders. Humans are uncontrollable. That's why laws need to be created in order to TRY to control them!

Maybe in the animal kingdom, they think rescued ones are prettier (mixed blood) and stronger (healthier genes)... ;)

Seeing these single pups behind glass seriously freaks me out!! They need company so badly at that age, it is beyond cruel to keep them that way. And all these families buying a completely traumatized pup - only to abandon it or put it down when the problems with it become too big. :-( Depressing.

Good thing. We bought our bunnys five years ago because the rescue center tried to scam us. We would have loved to adopt

Is this even Constitutional? Can they also order stores to only sell Coke and not Pepsi?

So, they are striving to put them out of business?

1. There is nothing holy about business. If it damages living beings it needs to be stopped. 2. If you need to sell puppies and kittens to stay in business you're doing it wrong.

This is really bad for these businesses. They make a lot of their profits off of pure breeds. They won't survive just selling $15 mutts with no breed certification. I'm not opposed to asking them to participate in a optional program to accept rescue animals and sell them alongside pure breeds. But trying to force this onto private businesses will hurt them immensely.

Can't they get pure breeds from breeders if that's such an issue? The problem specifically covered here is the cruelty of mass-producing animals, not just the fact that they're pure-bred. I haven't been to a pet store that sells dogs in all my life, so clearly people can make a profit without them.
