We all love our pets. Humans have kept domesticated animals for thousands of years now and they provide us with companionship and protection while fulfilling our desire to nurture.

But having pets comes with great responsibility. To the animal obviously - this creature now relies on you for its quality of life and you need to ensure its physical and emotional needs are met. And to other people too - you should be able to look after your animal and keep it healthy and happy in such a way that doesn't encroach on the lives of others.

Simple really, isn't it? Well, not to everyone. This list, compiled by the good folks here at Bored Panda, is a catalog of shame, showing the times when pet owners were jerks not only to their poor animals but to society at large. From the liberal dumpings of excrement to just flat-out animal neglect, these people don't deserve to be let anywhere near an animal again, and makes you wonder if perhaps it was time people had to get a license to have a pet.

Scroll down to see what we mean below, and let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments.

My Neighbour Was Evicted And Left The Family Cat. Looks Like I Have A New Cat

Jesuschooltrash Report

Bored Panda spoke to Tinsley Dahl from the Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership, who kindly gave us some important points to remember before taking the big decision of getting a pet. It's not a responsibility to take lightly!

"Before you start meeting adorable puppy eyes or pretty kitten paws that you just cannot refuse, take some time to sit down with your family and consider your overall schedule and energy level," she said. "How long will you be gone during an average day? What’s your activity level? Do you spend weekends away from home? Do you take daily walks or do outdoor activities currently?"

"Sometimes life can be unpredictable, and if you’re planning any big lifestyle changes, these can be an important consideration. Planning on getting married or starting a family soon? Socialization will be key for your pet to ensure that your best buddy is welcoming of new family members. For dogs, obedience training and proper activity can be important to curb undesirable behaviors. Big changes can be very stressful for humans, and pets under duress can experience behavior and health changes due to stressful environmental changes."

LeelinkGOML Report

"Are you prepared to make a long-term commitment? It’s important when adopting a new pet to consider not only what having a pet entails during the fun puppy or kitten stage, but also if you’re prepared to grow with your pet. Cats and some small breed dogs can live up to 20 years! It’s imperative to consider how the needs of your new pet may change over time, and what may be required in the way of health care or other needs."

"Has your family researched what vetting costs over the lifetime of a dog or cat? In addition to basics like pet food, toys, treats, and other fun accessories for your pooch or kitty, your playful pooch or kitty will need regular checkups and dental cleanings in order to look and feel his very best for a lifetime of fun. In addition to an annual exam, your furry friend will require vaccines and potentially tests and medications from time to time. Active doggies may encounter everyday injuries just like humans. Many online resources exist that estimate the cost of veterinary care over a pet’s lifetime. Some owners choose to provide pet insurance to assist when the unexpected does occur. Pet insurance provides a range of coverage and prices from emergency only to full annual exam and wellness benefits. Friends, family, and neighbors can be a great resource to find a veterinarian. If adopting from a rescue organization, ask the rescue for a list of great vets in the area!"

For Years, Vegan Blogger Sonia Sae Has Been Allegedly Raising Her Pet Fox Jumanji On A Vegan Diet Because She Thinks That All Species Are Equals

For Years, Vegan Blogger Sonia Sae Has Been Allegedly Raising Her Pet Fox Jumanji On A Vegan Diet Because She Thinks That All Species Are Equals

Sae has already admitted that Jumanji is half blind, suffers from spontaneous convulsions and a severe skin condition. However, she refuses to believe that this is because of what do foxes eat. “They use the word ‘abuse’ to describe the act of feeding [it] food that no animal had to die for. Despite the obvious oxymoron, any other non-vegan alternative DOES involve abuse by default,” she said in a Facebook post.

"Poodle or Maltipoo? Siamese or Domestic Short Hair? Deciding what breed of dog or cat may be the best fit for your family can be a fun learning experience. There is no shortage of kennel clubs or online resources regarding each breed."

"While breed is often a personal preference, it’s important to take into account the general temperament of each breed. Mixed breed dogs often inherit a combination of each breed trait and can vary in both appearance and temperament. Many rescues specialize in Purebred dogs. Similarly, purebred dogs can often be found in local shelters through no fault of their own. One of the benefits of mixed breed dogs is that because they are genetically more diverse, they are less likely to inherit genetic defects that can cause health problems."

These are just a few things to take into account before getting a pet, unfortunately many people rush into the decision and find themselves overwhelmed. For more information about responsible pet ownership as well as the possibility to adopt if you do think you are ready, check out ARPO's Facebook page here.

I saw this at a house I was working on, previous owners moved out and left their 2 cats, along with around 30 lbs of cat food. I fed and watered them every morning I worked there. Offered to take them but then new owners said they would take care of them once they moved in.

Why walk by? Why not take the dog to a shelter or just shame the owner at the tea shop and call him out?

The older I get, the fewer f***s I give about speaking up when I see something like this. I no longer care about the feelings of abusive or rude people. I would walk right into the tea shop and ask in a very loud voice who the animal abuser is who left their dog outside in such extreme cold. And my voice would not stop as I followed them out of the building to tend to their dog. I would even tell them I’d take the dog from them if they can’t dredge up enough humanity to take care of it properly. I very much want people like that to be very publicly shamed.

I would VERY slowly untie the dog and walk it back and forth until the "owner" came out freaking out. Then I'd be like why are you freaking out? And they'd be like "that's my dog" I'd be like yeaaaaa, you surrendered that right when you left him out in the freezing cold. He's MY dog now. "

Even with snow on the ground, Kirkland doesn't really hit "below freezing". They make it sound dramatic like it's negative 20 but was likely 31 degrees. (Really, I'd guess it was 35-40, we rarely get below freezing during the day.) Even my 15lb Pomeranian Chihuahua mix is happy as a clam to be outside for ages at that temp. I have to drag him back inside when I get too cold, he's never bothered in the slightest by the temps. This is hardly a horrible pet owner, more like the OP just wants attention and something to be "outraged" by.

This one is different than most of the other examples. Kirkland is basically Seattle. The temperature rarely falls below --4 C (25 F). This is a normal sized with a full coat. The cold is not the issue. He is whimpering because he wants to be with his people, not because of the 'cold'. My outrage meter only reads a 1-out-of-10 on this one.

You do realize dogs are descended from wolves... who live outside in Canadian winters. Unless it’s -20C (-70F), that kind of dog is totally fine for 45min. She was probably whimpering because her owner was inside. I feel worse for them in the summer.

That is part of the "great dog/wolf debate" actually, but there was a "proto-wolf" so to speak that they are both descended from but the lines split and the two types of canines (wolves and domesticated dogs) have evolved separately from each other. They are not direct line descendants of the modern day wolf as we know it. And also dogs have been domesticated for tens of thousands of years (or possibly even longer according to the most recent discoveries) so using that as an example is like saying "well people thousands of years ago could survive the Ice age, so you shouldn't worry about someone freezing to death outside in modern times".

I know Kirkland. It's a lot of high end real estate owned by privileged people. The best way to stop them from doing this is to walk in the tea shop and loudly announce "Who ever left their dog out here tied up in the freezing cold is about to face animal cruelty charges when the police get here!!" It usually lights a fire under the owners a$$ to get out there and actually take care of their animal.

Taking the dog may lead to legal issues (owner may claim you stole their dog). Should have reported this after making the dog comfortable, then offered to adopt once the person loses custody of their dog for such cruelty.
