Person Mocks People For Listening To CDC’s Advice On Masks, Gets Ridiculed In This Perfect Response

These are tough times that we’re living in. There’s such a huge flood of information about the coronavirus that sometimes it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lost. We get it. However, that just means that you have to be extra careful not to fall prey to conspiracy theories.

When one person questioned whether we should “blindly listen” to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (aka the CDC’s) advice about wearing face masks, someone else wrote a great comeback and shut the skeptic down.

The best part is when they call the conspiracy theorist a breathing Dunning-Kruger graph (that is, that the skeptic vastly overestimates their skills). The interaction went viral on the internet, getting more than 77.1k upvotes on Reddit’s r/MurderedByWords community and more than 5.3k upvotes on Imgur. Doing your own research is always a plus but ignoring the advice of specialists can be dangerous.

The CDC recommends that people wear face masks to slow the spread of the coronavirus

However, one internet user told people that they shouldn’t “blindly” do what the CDC says and ought to do their own research first

Somebody immediately shut them down by explaining why it’s a good idea to trust what the CDC says

The CDC urges people to wear face masks and even has a handy guide on making them at home if you don’t have any available. Their DIY mask guide can be found right here.

Though the CDC initially said that healthy people shouldn’t wear face masks based on the data available at the time, it has since recommended that everyone wear masks because asymptomatic carriers might otherwise spread the virus without even knowing that they’re ill.

“If there was broken glass all over the floor, would you refuse to wear shoes on principle?”

Previously, Bored Panda spoke with former co-host of MythBusters, Adam Savage about just that—coronavirus conspiracy theories and why so many people believe them. Savage told us that some people find the idea of a worldwide conspiracy to be “comforting” in these strange times.

“Life is unending chaos. We are insignificant, we are born, briefly shine, and then we die. There’s plenty of suffering in between. Maybe, when they’re confronted with that chaos, for some people the idea of a coordinated plan is comforting, even if the plan is against them. At least someone is in charge,” he said.

“Real evil is way more banal, I imagine, than most people think it is. The true horror is preventable, incremental bureaucratic violence perpetrated on the weakest and most marginalized in society. Little people, each afraid for their jobs. Not some nefarious hidden genius with a big plan. I have no idea if I’m right but the odds are with me.”

Savage said that maintaining a conspiracy theory on a global level would be impossible: “Trying to get hundreds or thousands of human beings to keep quiet forever about something huge in a perfectly coordinated fashion is about as realistic as making a skyscraper from jello. Humans are just too squishy and unpredictable.”

The former MythBusters co-host added that the best way to fight coronavirus disinformation is to wear your face mask and not be a jerk: “If there was broken glass all over the floor, would you refuse to wear shoes on principle?”

Here’s how some people reacted to the two comments and the epic shutdown of the conspiracy theorist

Even if wearing a mask would not do anything, it is a great reminder to keep distance, and respect the health of others. Just by wearing it, or seeing it worn, you are reminded not to touch your face, and wash your hands.

I have not been wearing a mask and have remained silent about why. My personal reason is claustrophobia. If I wear one it gives me a panic attack and I feel like I can't breath. I can't even put my head under the blankets when I'm in bed so wearing a mask for me is a nightmare.

The mask is not for your safety, but for the safety of others. It stops you from filling the air with droplets of spit that, if you are infected and don't know it yet, are full of viruses. Even a bandana or scarf in front of your face is enough to protect the people around you from you. If you can't mask, then please stay home.

Short answer, yes. First, we don't know for sure whether or not those with antibodies can still spread the virus. Second, allowing public exceptions for those with positive antibody tests would require safety officials to track or check the validity of anyone claiming immunity, and that's probably a logistical (and fairly dystopian) nightmare. Kudos to your recovery btw!

Here's how you respond in 6 steps: 1. Confirm they believe the problem is accepting someone's word without research 2. Ask them who told them masks don't work 3. Ask them if they did any research and where 4. Point out they did exactly what they said you did wrong 5. Tell them to read WebMD on how ANY virus spreads (including the flu) 6. After, tell them to decide FOR THEMSELVES if they should wear a mask

Even the person saying they’d want to see the CDC’s research before following orders is wrong. If you have zero exposure to scientific research or studies, then in all likelihood you do not know how to read these things. People jump right to the results and think, well this is the conclusion so that solves that. NO IT DOES NOT. There are so many pieces involved that you have to consider. First and foremost, are there flaws in the study design (too small a population, no control group, etc.)? Secondly, is this a random, one off study or are there a bunch of others backing it up? What do other scientists in this field say, i.e. what are the criticisms? The CDC does all this leg work and due diligence for us because most of us can’t do it ourselves, since you know we aren’t scientists or specialists in any way. So everyone stop pretending your rigorous research on Google is anywhere near equivalent to bodies of scientific knowledge.

Hold up! First let's be clear: By "The CDC" the OP means Charlie Daniel Cisnicki, a guy he knows at the local bar. By the way CDC talks, he seems to know a little about a lot of things. He calls himself *The* CDC because he thinks highly of himself. But yeah, just because The CDC says that you should wear a mask, I would not. Now, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), I would listen to.

IF people were wearing the proper types of masks, but the majority of them don't. IF people treated the masks they do have properly, but the majority of them don't. IF people were wearing masks properly, but the majority of them don't. IF people didn't touch things, then their mask, then their face, but the majority of them do. IF people didn't think that wearing a mask made them invulnerable, but the majority of them do believe that. IF people knew the proper way to take a mask off and put it on, but the majority of them don't. IF people knew not to throw the masks in parking lots, on sidewalks and in playgrounds when they took it off, but so many of them do. IF people washed their hands after touching their masks / removing their masks, but the majority of them don't. IF everyone could wear a mask...but sadly, some people can't due to medical / psychological issues. IF only everyone would mind their own damn business and leave others alone to do what they think is right.

wasn't it the CDC and the WHO who were against the wearing of mask and gloves before they were for it? Wasn't it the CDC acting as the WHO's and China's water boys and girls saying how the virus wasn't easily caught and is far less worrisome than the seasonal flue?

They both said healthy people shouldn't buy surgical masks because medical personnel need it more, and if everyone bought it, it would cause a shortage. That has not changed. The CDC still says don't buy surgical masks, make or buy cloth masks. The WHO did say in January that, *preliminary* research showed no evidence of person-to-person contact. "Preliminary" and "no evidence" just means research is ongoing, and we really don't know the facts yet. Nobody with any science education would have been comforted by that statement.

MEDIA_PUMPED?! BTW, a piece of cotton cloth of certain thickness (which you'd know if you read anything) is perhaps 30% as effective as N95/surgical masks ---- but that's better than ZERO. However, if you chose not to wear a mask, please, do so. At the nearest Covid19 ward near you. If you really think it's nothing. Go handle their bloody sputum and hold their hands.

Obviously, this jerk does not know the facts about the ineffectiveness of masks espoused by the Surgeon General, epidemiologists, surgeons and other professionals. He's just regurgitating the pap and propaganda the CDC spews out. Intelligent, and informed people, do diligent research and find the true facts concerning this subject. Don't think for a second that the CDC doesn't have a political agenda behind many of their proclamations, just like WHO.

That's an odd assertion. A response is only valid if the person you say it to isn't an idiot?

So everyone stop pretending your rigorous research on Google is anywhere near equivalent to bodies of scientific knowledge.

the problem with those folks is that they think its the govt trying to tell them what to do, take away their rights, but in reality its them saying "do this so you or other people wont get sick and possibly die".

Some countries have made wearing masks mandatory. Guess they were too lazy to do their own research. Or maybe they listen to experts and not idiots on the internet. Just maybe.

I also wonder about people who want to see the CDC research...like I could even understand their real research. I like the CDC because they do the research, then they distill their results into words I can understand (-;

Amazing how most of the world got fooled by this mask&glove business..... Do you really think that piece of cotton will stop the virus? Any virus, not just this media-pumped 19 thing?

What is that political agenda exactly? Everyone gets sick, can't work, and the country loses millions of dollars. That benefits them how?? Masks work if everyone uses them appropriately, Just like vaccinations... oh wait, you probably don't believe in those either...
