Sadness mixed with humor in a perplexing, chaotic, and confusing way—that’s what the r/FunnyandSad online group over on Reddit is all about. An old-hand on the net, having been founded in November 2013, it has since then grown into a community of nearly 700k members.

The subreddit does exactly what it says on the tin and documents posts from all over the net that are funny and sad at the same time. It’s a melange of laughing through tears (or is that crying while you laugh?) that will show you that life is far more varied and nuanced than the black-and-white we’re used to seeing on the news and on social media.

Sadness is a very natural part of life and we ought to embrace it, instead of running away from it. After all, we can’t be happy-go-lucky all the time (I would know, I tried). And while being sad can even have certain benefits, like improving our memory and judgment, getting stuck in negative thinking patterns and endless loops of sadness isn’t healthy for our mental wellbeing.

I had a quick chat with an expert in the field of psychology about how to identify what these negative thinking patterns look like and how focusing just on our failures, having black or white thinking, and holding ourselves accountable for everything that goes wrong all harm our mental health.

Emma Morton, a researcher at the University of British Columbia, told Bored Panda that, for example, what we tend to focus on more, our successes or our failures, can influence our long-term mental health. For instance, hyper-concentrating on all the things that go wrong or could potentially go wrong can trap us in a perpetual loop of self-criticism and anxiety.

This, in turn, can lead to feelings of very low self-esteem and even depression which, in turn, can make us unwilling to ask for help and support even though we might desperately need both. However, there are other ways how we can end up trapped in negative thinking patterns, too.

I read somewhere that the person who created insulin didn't patent it so that it could be given to people who need it to live at no cost to them. I may not have that quite right though.

You are more or less correct, Banting put the patent price of insulin at $1, and reportedly said, “Insulin belongs to the world, not to me "

Well, first of all you need to go after Congress and the FDA. The reason there are only three suppliers of insulin is because Congress reclassified insulin not as a GENERIC drug, thus available to all drug makers to sell, BUT BECAUSE CONGRESS RECLASSIFIED IT AS A BIOLOGIC drug. That meant that ANY drug company who wanted to produce insulin HAD TO GO THROUGH TESTING AGAIN. That meant that all these drug companies had to spend the equivalent of a BILLION dollars to RETEST AND RE-CERTIFY a drug that they had been selling for years. They couldn't afford it so they quit making it. Government bureaucrats do more damage than a century of non-stop hurricanes.

Congress did not classify insulin as biologic drug, it IS a biologic drug. Biologics is a term for drugs that are produced by living organisms, usually cell cultures (as opposed to chemical drugs that can synthetized by chemical reaction in a lab). That's why most pharmaceutical companies can't produce it, it's literally completely different technology. Also, it's a biologic everywhere, yet the US is the only developed country when it's unaffordable. I think it's because the other governments regulate drug prices for the sake of their citizens, while in the US, free market is worshiped as a god, regardless the consequences it has for people.

Here in the US they charge you $40 to hold your baby after you give birth, so this is not surprising. And as long as lawmakers get top shelf health insurance with the job and lobbying is legal, this will never change. I'm sure there's a lot of politicians with their fingers in the pharma pie.

Totally agree! No major or even minor changes have been made to insulin, except the price! I use Lantus and Humalog, have used them since 2014- the only change is the amount of money we pay out of pocket for them. I start at $43 until I hit the donut hole in May/June when the price goes up to $125 a rx. It's ridiculous as these aren't the only high priced meds that I take everyday.

It's much more than inflation. Given a cumulative 19.2% rate of inflation from 2009 - 2019, an item costing $93 in 2009 would cost $110.83 in 2019.

Don't forget about Epinephrine to save lives during anaphylaxis. Yup, and Narcan is free. They give it out like candy. And I'm NOT saying it shouldn't be used. I can't count how many times I've given it the field for overdoses. But other lifesaving drugs should be given the same merit.

Thank US Govt Regulations for this. Literally we eliminate one single healthcare regulation and the price would be less than $20 a prescription. The companies charge that high due to US regulations on medications. They also make a lot of money. But the reason for it is govt regulations that prevent anyone but select manufacturers from making it here, requires them to have high costs to comply with medicare and medicaid, etc. Literally abolishing one single regulation will collapse prices. This is not extortion, this is government regulations

This is so insulting. Most people who need insulin are Type 1 diabetics, whose body just doesn't produce it. Many of them are young children, people who do sports, people who otherwise live healthy lives. It's an autoimmune disease, not a lifestyle one. I'm sorry, but go f yourself.
