Sadness mixed with humor in a perplexing, chaotic, and confusing way—that’s what the r/FunnyandSad online group over on Reddit is all about. An old-hand on the net, having been founded in November 2013, it has since then grown into a community of nearly 700k members.

The subreddit does exactly what it says on the tin and documents posts from all over the net that are funny and sad at the same time. It’s a melange of laughing through tears (or is that crying while you laugh?) that will show you that life is far more varied and nuanced than the black-and-white we’re used to seeing on the news and on social media.

Sadness is a very natural part of life and we ought to embrace it, instead of running away from it. After all, we can’t be happy-go-lucky all the time (I would know, I tried). And while being sad can even have certain benefits, like improving our memory and judgment, getting stuck in negative thinking patterns and endless loops of sadness isn’t healthy for our mental wellbeing.

I had a quick chat with an expert in the field of psychology about how to identify what these negative thinking patterns look like and how focusing just on our failures, having black or white thinking, and holding ourselves accountable for everything that goes wrong all harm our mental health.

Emma Morton, a researcher at the University of British Columbia, told Bored Panda that, for example, what we tend to focus on more, our successes or our failures, can influence our long-term mental health. For instance, hyper-concentrating on all the things that go wrong or could potentially go wrong can trap us in a perpetual loop of self-criticism and anxiety.

This, in turn, can lead to feelings of very low self-esteem and even depression which, in turn, can make us unwilling to ask for help and support even though we might desperately need both. However, there are other ways how we can end up trapped in negative thinking patterns, too.

438,000 I presume is the number in the US. Worldwide there are approx 153 MILLION orphans according to UNICEF. They claim to be pro-lifers but that is a complete lie. They are pro-birthers and anti-women, not pro-lifers. As long as the unwanted foetus is born they can go to sleep happy even knowing that there are high chances the woman and child would suffer for the rest of their lives. Over 300,000 women die during pregnancy and child birth annually and 5 million more women suffering long term effects including disabilities. Over 7 million women and girls suffer complications from unsafe abortions annually, including death. Pro-lifers, pfft an absolute joke.

Absolutely spot on! My lovely husband is the best (and loves doing it) at arguing with these people. The first thing he asks is "how many children have you adopted?" I think he has a valid point. If these "pro-life" people are going to argue against abortion, then they damn well should be taking these children into their homes rather putting them in foster care. And you're right, there's no pro-life going on here. They are anti-abortion and don't deserve the title of pro-life. Not when they also deny the parents of children food stamps and any other type of assistance.

Once I made a comment on Reddit about how men should not be able to vote on women's rights. And this pro lifer started stalking me and making my life crazy. It was insane. I just made one comment. This guy followed me, checked my comments and went and left nasty messages on every comment I had previously made, on every subreddit~ it took me a while to figure it out before I could block him.

"Fun fact" most of them offers a lot of support for young girls in an "unfortunate situation" right until the point where she cannot reverse the decision anymore, and then leave her alone from there. Having the baby isn't the hardest part, it is what comes after that. It is despicable and only illustrate how false and selfish their "love" of the human life is, and how little they in reality care.

The best way to avoid the issue of abortion all together is to educate and give people (yes male and female) access to pregnancy prevention methods. Many (not all) unwanted pregnancies are caused by people who; a) are unable to access protection, b) do not know how to use protection properly, c) are unaware of the various prevention methods available for men and women. If steps were taken to spread awareness and accessibility, unwanted pregnancies everywhere could potentially be decreased significantly. Generally speaking I think there are too many people on the planet, if you want lots of kids adopt them!

This is ridiculous to be honest. The two don't go hand in hand. Somebody who is pro-life can still care about and value existing life. Im really sick of this world and everybodys petulant squabbling. I am pro-choice to a degree because its an important component to liberty and free will. I also am pro-life because I value life and I'm not psychopath. I don't need to justify either stance because both are reasonable and the sooner we come to gracefully accept that, the better. Our God complex is out of control and I'm sick of the intolerance from both 'sides'.

Im pro choice, and i want to adopt 2-3 kids when i'm financially stable and all.. I wish i was rich af so i could adopt/support whole way more. It's also so sad that so many people don't even consider adoption, i know it is hard with older kids but there are also infants that need loving families, but so many couples decide to try invitro over and over and in the end if they can't conceive they go childless.. Please people consider adoption, maybe you can be a family to a child in need, give them a chance, be their angel!

This infuriates me. This has nothing to do with the abortion issue. FOSTER CHILDREN ARE NOT ORPHANS!!! The average child in U.S. foster care is there for only 13 months. They usually end up being returned to their families or relatives. However, my parents, several relatives and a couple of my best friends have been foster parents and they were all pro-life activists, so this is mere presumption.

"It is the goal of the foster care system to reunite children with their families". In my area, out of 3,600 children in foster care, only 19 are available for adoption. Even parents who are incarcerated still retain their parental rights, so people who want to adopt CAN'T. It is heartbreaking to foster children. You care for them, love them, then they get ripped from your loving arms and given back to their abusers.

I made this argument 5 or so years ago in a conservative forum. I used 600,000 as the number in foster. I got quite a few replies of the "what, you expect all of us to take these children in" type. Anti-abortionists, regardless of political stripe, only care about the lives as long as they're not a crying, screaming, demanding, shitting mess of an actual living breathing human being.

I know this is old but omg "pro-life" people should take responsibility for all the kids in foster care and all the kid incoming in foster care because of their opinion. What is wrong with people? Ruinning 2 / 3 lives is better than an aborbtion? Because yes, that's often the point: it would ruin the mother's and kid's lives, and eventually the father's life. We are already too many on this earth, please get an aborbtion if you can, and if you don't want that kid. We don't need more (unhappy) people on this earth. (but reading the comments we definitely need a new plague. Oh. Wait.)

When Republican men start double wrapping their penii or having prophylactic vasectomies they should stop talking about what women should be willing to do with THEIR bodies. Women are not human incubators and there are many situations that make it unhealthy, unsafe or unwise to bring another human into the world.and since Republican men are also hell bent on taking away birth control, that's all the more reason for double wrapping and vasectomies. Take some responsibility, women don't end up pregnant by themselves.

Fetuses are babies. I truly empathize and care about kids in foster (my own father was in foster care for a bit), but they aren't the unborn children who are sentenced to murder and execution in facilities specifically made to perform that task. Foster children have voices. The unborn don't.

I value the freedom we have in the U.S. and if a woman chooses to have an abortion that's her right. However , can we please call it is, you are killing a person, plain and simple. If someone walks up to a pregnant woman and punches her in the gut that is murder, but when a woman hires a doctor to basically do the same thing that's perfectly acceptable. If it's murder then that means the fetus has personhood and just because a person chooses to abort that doesn't take the fetus' personhood away.

trefrylynda avatar
L.A. Trefry

If the woman is pregnant and wishes that pregnancy to develop into a child then, depending on how far along the birth is (i.e., would the fetus be viable outside the uterus?) it might be considered murder, depending on the law of the country. But terminating a pregnancy before it has produced a viable fetus is in no way murder. Some 97 percent of abortions are done in the first trimester -- most of those around the first six weeks (as soon as the woman misses a period.) There is nothing close to a child at that point.

And who is to say what's best for the mother and child? If you don't want kids then don't have sex if u have sex then use protection better yet have a hysterectomy and guys a vecectomy the problem is too many people don't want to take responsibility for their selfish actions thats the real truth. Idc if I get down voted 🗳 it's true women and men need to stop being so selfish and driven by their lust and start to think about the reality of what their actions could mean. It is a proven and documented and even has video proof that when the sperm and egg meet there is a flash of light that happens that is the exact moment that a baby is starting to be created. Yall say it's a clump of cells but yet fail to comprehend that if u let it grow it grows into a child. So that stale old argument yall like to use is irrelevant. With the mindset yalll have why not stomp on pregnant animals I mean they don't really have a baby do they? It's sick yall are okay w puppies, and kittens but have a personal vendetta against a helpless baby. Imagine if yall mother aborted you guys 🤔

1) Not all pregnancies are the result of consentual sex, & not everyone has a proper sex education or access to birth control. 2) There is no "flash of light". Do you think a woman's vagina has light glowing out of it when the egg is fertilized or something? 3) Yes, the clump of cells will grow into a child with feelings if it is allowed to grow... but it isn't allowed to grow. It is not yet a child. So don't pretend it is. 4) Do you honestly believe a medical procedure performed on a consenting adult by trained professionals is in any way equivalent to violent animal abuse? You're f*****g sick. Animals have nothing to do with pro-choice. In any case, they're ANIMALS. They can't make a choice! 5) If my mother aborted me, I simply would not exist & therefore not have an opinion on whether the abortion was a good idea or not. Regardless, if my mother felt that she was not prepared for pregnancy/motherhood, I would much prefer she had gotten an abortion because I want what's best for her.

I’d really like to see some actual statistics on this because this seems like an oversimplified version of the truth. And naturally, if you’re against abortion and a woman’s right to choose when she wants to start a family, you damn well better be taking in unwanted children. Still, only roughly 5% of Christians have adopted a child, while a much higher percentage is against abortion. It’s not enough.

I am sort of pro-choice but honestly could care less. I do feel that the government should not fund abortions with specific exceptions (medical reasons, rape). If your going to do it you should pay for it. Another thing that gets me along this topic is if a woman wants an abortion but father wants the kid she can say "my body my choice" but if she wants to keep and he doesn't guess who gets stuck paying child support.

“Negative thinking patterns can include only paying attention to failures and ignoring successes, black or white thinking (e.g., ‘If I get anything less than an A+ on this test, I’m a failure’), labeling oneself based on mistakes (e.g., ‘I’m a loser, an idiot’), [and] mind-reading (e.g., ‘Everyone will think I’m a loser for not getting this promotion’),” Emma went into detail with Bored Panda how we can end up being overly harsh with ourselves.

My husband and I were curious a few days ago about how much rent we have paid to our current landlord. It's over 160k. The house we just found and got denied for is only 149k, lol

She continued, adding that another negative pattern includes “holding yourself personally accountable for things that go wrong and attributing successes to luck or the contributions of others (e.g., ‘I only got that award because nobody else applied’).”

As such, having unrealistic expectations of what we’re capable of and being unreasonably demanding of ourselves can lead to “feelings of depression and worthlessness” that in turn “make it harder to reach out for help.” So while it’s perfectly fine to feel sadness, we all need to know when to ask for a helping hand if we find ourselves constantly stuck with only negative thoughts.

Totally. I am now halfway through my second health degree and my father still tells me what medical advice he got from the TV, and when I say, "No that is not correct info" he gets irritated, "I watched the thing on TV!!" Yes coz 6-8 years education on the subject has taught me absolutely nothing....What can you do...still love him...

It's also because in the US you have to pay thousands of dollars in medical bills for prenatal care and labour and delivery, even if nothing goes wrong. You also get 2 weeks maternity leave, if you're lucky. A lot of people literally cannot afford to *have* a baby, let alone raise a child.

My single beet was a little bigger, but I planted Aton of veggies - got sick and all it takes is one day of neglect for everything to die in AZ summer temps (I’m new at this). I’m surprised your little tomato turned red so soon! Don’t they stay green in early growth? But what do I know - I get oddball things in my “garden” regularly. Going to try a fall planting this year. Your tomato is adorable. Keep trying!
