If you hear someone say, "I'm not scared of that," or, "I didn't want that promotion anyway," it doesn't necessarily mean they're mentally strong. In fact, there's a good chance it's just a facade.

To illustrate this, let's look at the subreddit which we at Bored Panda call "I Am Very Bad". From gun nuts to overly-protective boyfriends, this online community has plenty of examples to prove that overcompensation can be very, very obvious.

Here are the posts that got the most upvotes from the sub's 1.2 million members.

To learn more about "I Am Very Bad" we contacted its moderators and one of them, u/ergoegthatis, agreed to have a little chat.

"Some of the most popular ['tough' people on the subreddit are the ones who see] injustice in the news (e.g. someone being insulted or bear up), and say, 'If that happened to me I'd so and so and so and so!' With everyone on social media having a platform to air any opinion they have, this is incredibly common," u/ergoegthatis told Bored Panda.

"Also in the US, there are many intense political/social statements related to politics and guns. For some reason, Americans are religiously addicted to expressing their opinions on everything, in every possible way (including car decals)."

Ah yes, the 'us' and 'them' mentality. Also the result of brainwashing. If someone cuts in line, say something. You don't immediately have to resort to violence like a little coward who can't communicate his feelings like a normal adult. (edited the bad word to coward)

That's because a pussy is a body part that might slightly resemble a mouth, but can't say anything, which would be really advantageous for communication. Please stop using the word pussy as an insult.

From what I've seen, the US military don't treat their soldiers like gods while serving, and I *know* vets weren't treated like gods after retirement at least into the 1970s... so where does this entitlement and superiority come from? Anyone know?

The only service members who act like that were never service members, got kicked out of the service or served just long enough to get a honorable discharge and thinks they're entitled to the worship of everyone. I have family who served in Vietnam, my dad was an Army MP, his dad was Navy WWII just like my father in law. I have family from the Gulf War and currently serving stateside-fortunately. None of them brag about their service and some forget discounts they can get, like hotels! I worked with a couple younger guys who just got out of the military and were the biggest a-holes. I don't know their discharge status but they were very aggressive and didn't last long. I wish I had joined but what parents who had brothers in Vietnam would want their only daughter to join the military during George HW?😳

Yes, as an Air Force veteran I can tell you he probably didn't last long in service. In the military we have a saying "hurry up and wait". You are always hustling and then waiting around for EVERYTHING. I can't speak for other branches but I can't imagine that this type of hostility and impatience would be tolerated in any branch.

So this whole military and vet thing...it is/was a choice. It is right to appreciate you, but you're not entitled to anything because of your personal choice. BTW, I'm reading more about how vets abhor the whole "thank you for your service " so wtf? I'm an RN and started hearing that during the pandemic/now. It's not a selfless act. I get paid well, there are benefits. I'm not entitled to anything. Thanks are always great but, I made my point.

don't tell me...along with his veteran hat he has a red one as well. as a military brat, wife, etc., if any vet would go off on my based on his status of a vet he would get what he wanted - a conflict because, yes...you are now a civilian. kind of reminds me of when i was waiting at the military hospital for an appointment for my son and a woman came in as walk in. there was another military wife at the counter but the woman came up and demanded to be seen. when told she would have to make an appointment unless it was an emergency and needed to go to ER she went off on this poor corpman. she started screaming 'don't you know who i am? don't you know my husband is (enter officer's rank and name)?' and other things similar. after she had finished, expecting to be seen after that spectacle the military wife who was standing there said, ' well, i am third class (name) wife and i have an appointment. besides, you make your living the same way i do: you sleep with a sailor."

My brother-in-law is a retired Marine. The only thing he expects from his service is the veteran benefits he was promised, like the medical care needed to keep his body functioning after all the damage it received during his time in service. He does not call other people civilians like it's some sort of curse word

So many things intentionally created to divide us. Or make us think we are somehow better than or more valuable than the next human being. People actually buy into it to. Thinking because your a CEO or military, cop, governor, or doctor. That you are somehow more valuable as a person. Or more deserving of something. It's called humanity and everyone from the homeless person right up to the CEO deserves respect, decency, dignity, love, kindness, healthcare, education, and to be treated well. . This whole world is so awful and I'm tired of people who can't see how heartless and awful they are.

When a 'veteran' talks down about 'civilians' (which most of them tend to) it's with all the condescension of a superior being to a molerat. Maybe what this supposed "Marine" needs is PTSD meds to stop his explosive level of intolerance.

Mmm, no. Once you're military, you never return to the 'civilian' mindset. And as military (former or current), you're automatically part of my 'family' now. Doesn't mean you're a great person or a horrible person, just that we have a strong shared background and mindset. But that doesn't mean that we are permitted to be abusive. I'd be upset too, getting cut in line, but is that really worth going to JAIL for...?

Actually, being a vet means you can be recalled to active duty at any time. Those who thought they were civilians had a rude awakening at the start of the Gulf War. Also, being a vet provide access to military installations and resources not granted to civilians.

No... veterans are NOT civilians... they are veterans, they were civilians BEFORE they enlisted, but the changes that take place when becoming a member of the armed forces can never be undone. That being said, there are an awful lot of civilians out there that pretend to be service members and veterans because they think that status brings them some kind of reward... it doesn't. Serving our country is a choice that we make for reasons we don't need to explain to others - we don't do it for recognition, and we certainly don't do it for reward, because military pay is amongst the lowest hourly rate in the world.

According to the moderator, the subreddit's 'characters' usually overcompensate due to their fear of a scary, unpredictable, and hostile world.

"It depends on society too: we rarely see these ... expressions coming from Europe, the Arab world, Southern and Central America, Russia, China, Japan, etc. America is witnessing social, political, and economic implosions, so this seems to be a way for them to cope with that," they added.

The subreddit's community, on the other hand, is way more diverse. "It's heterogeneous, [and has] got all sorts of people," u/ergoegthatis said. "I don't think there's any common factor in our userbase, except the desire to have fun and laugh at people who take their purported [toughness] to comical levels in public."

While acting tough may meet a person's needs in the short term by artificially boosting their ego or by getting others to back off, it's not a good long-term strategy. In fact, one study conducted by psychologists at Rutgers University found that guys who act tough may suffer serious consequences.

The paper, published in The Journal of Health Psychology, found that these men visit doctors less often. They're also less forthcoming about their medical symptoms when they see a male physician (interestingly, these same men were more likely to choose a male doctor because they believe male doctors are more competent than females).

Researchers suspect that delaying medical appointments and minimizing symptoms could be one of the reasons why men in the US die, on average, five years earlier than women.

If you want to see whether or not you have a tendency to act this way, this article by Inc. provides a 7-point checklist that could help in evaluating yourself.

If you're also putting up a fake exterior that helps you feel superior, consider the toll it may take on your life. Instead, try to invest in building mental strength, so the way you feel on the inside matches how others see you on the outside. As your mental strength increases, your need to act tough decreases.
