Some rules exist because they had to be implemented. Like the speed limit or legal drinking age. Meanwhile, some rules have backfired big time and made the people who implemented them regret their decision. Check out our previous post about such instances right here.

But there are rules that need no introduction. They’re not documented in books nor authorized by law, and still, they govern our daily lives. This simple “common sense” is also known as “unwritten rules” and they refer to common behavioral constraints we all take for granted.

Things like not swiping sideways if someone shows a picture on their phone, or never making fun of someone else’s laugh. Sounds random, but people swear by it! Scroll down below for more unspoken rules listed by people online.

So much this. This needs to be higher on the list. Being wrong and learning is a part of personal growth. Even if I am in a heated debate with someone and arguing my point and it all of a sudden dawns on me that they are right, I will immediately concede. Always good to be moldable, being rigid doesn't do anyone any good.

There are many ways to concede: "I hadn't thought of that, thanks", "I didn't know that, thanks for the explanation", "Ah. I stand corrected, then", "You bring up a good point". In one case, I still disagreed with someone about a song that made fun of a characteristic we both had, but I came to understand their point of view: "I can see how that would be offensive."

During a looooonh IEP meeting, a teacher asked my youngest what they like most about me as a parent. My child said " mom always apologizes when she says or does something wrong." I was embarrassed, because because who likes to be wrong. The school psychiatrist said that it was rare for parents to apologize to their children when they're wrong. If that's true, it explains a lot about our society.

People refusing to admit they may have made a mistake, and continuing to double down further and further attempting to avoid a little embarrassment, has led modern mankind to some of it's darkest places.

Made a HUGE mistake at work, but discovered it before anyone else. I immediately went to my Boss (company owner) and fessed up. I told him I'd be willing to call the customer and apologize, etc. He was really impressed by the fact I did that. I was promoted (not really - bookkeeper to Corporate Controller) and got a slight pay raise. I never hurts to be honest about a mistake.

Excuse me? Let's not be ageist here! I'm 45 and I've always thought it is very important to admit it when you are wrong. I always admit that I'm wrong if my daughter brings me some information I did not know or explains how something I did was wrong. Has been doing this since she was little. And I do it when talking to any other reasonable human beings, too. Always.

In order to normalize "admitting wrong", the concept needs to be also celebrated, and it's not. Most of the time, if someone in power or authority does something wrong, and admits it...they're crucified for it. People are afraid to admit wrong (justifiably so IMO)
