There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
Pineapple on pizza. It’s delicious, and if you hate it don’t s**t on people who like it.
Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
I heartily agree! We had a rat named Templeton some years ago. He was the smartest and most loving of any pet we've ever had.
Load More Replies...I had several pet rats and everything said before is so true. Best pet ever. Sadly, they have short life spans
This is sooo sad and the only reason why I could never have rats. I love those little critters, too cute and clever.
Load More Replies...I second this with all of my heart. I have had guineas, hampsters, mice, rabbits... but hands down the smartest, most clean rodents are the rats. They know their names, spend majority of their time sleeping or cleaning each other. Their are easy to train to do simple tricks. I bond with all of the pets I foster, but the rats always tug on my heart strings. And for their sakes PLEASE always get them a mate. Same with guinea pigs. They are EXTREMELY social.
I think this is more the difference between feral and domesticated animals / rodents etc.
I had 2 rats for a while, super playful animals and super easy to train. I had em trained to climb up my arm and sit on my shoulder.
Never had a pet rat, but I can see where the domesticated ones can be cool pets. However, I would thinks it still best to give wild rats a wide berth, in case they bite and pass on some kind of disease or something to humans.
You are right, but they should be treated similarily to other wild animals, which can also be dangerous. Many peope underestimate stags for example
Load More Replies...Rats are fabulous pets and companions. I'm so confused when people express revulsion simply by what they look like. They are disgusted, actually disgusted, by an animal's tail. It's an animal. Just being. How can that be revolting?
My sister got rats, before this I was scared of them. Now I buy them birthday presents.
true, i kept pet rats for 5 or so years - they are lovely, cute, easy to train and very smart. my first one loved sleeping in my shirt <3
Definitely I have two dumbo rats and they are the most adorable things in world!!!
I have had ratties myself and can agree 100% that they are intelligent and very loving creatures that will curl up with you just as any cat or dog will. They love attention and can be very humorous to watch and interact with.
Many years ago, I had a friend who raised them, and they were super sweet and interesting! You'd get soft kisses and snuggles:).
Rats are wonderful! Hamsters can be too. The golden hamsters I kept as a kid were all of them cuddly, bright, quirky, friendly with new people and excellent climbers. I think what made the difference was a lot of interaction & giving them freedom to roam every evening with the family (no, not with hamster balls - this was decades before they were on the market).
Personally, I think it's the tail. Not cute. I had pet rats, and they were great, but still not a fan of their tails.
I know what you mean. I feel the same way and can't really explain why.
Load More Replies...i had hamsters and guinea pigs once and i was bored so tested them to see who was most intelligent, i put food in two boxes, to see who could get to the food first, hamster destroyed that box in a second, the guinea pig sniffed the box and walked off, i lifted the box to show the food then put it back, they still walked off lol
Rats make wonderful and affectionate pets, but to be honest, I think hamsters are every bit as wonderful!
Losing my rats broke my heart. The ONLY reason I fight the longing for another is that they just don’t live long enough and I couldn’t go through that every 3 years. 😢
I must admit that until I read a book that had this rat as a sort of character I hated rats they creeped me out but since I read the book I find them cute and smart and have no problem with them
Rats are lovely pets. My son has had pet rats for years, and they get along well with his cats. His current rat even observed the cats using the litter box, and now the rat uses it too!
My first pet rat was rescued from a fraternity house at MIT. The guys were assembled to watch as it was fed to a snake. When the snake's owner dropped the rat, the guys scattered. I picked it up and took it home.
It's the typical superstitious ignorance people have created about so many things over the generations. Look at how many people absolutely hate cats, wolves, bats, pigeons and even did and do sadistic inhumane things to them. The little guy in this pic could absolutely be my buddy, though I never had a rat for pet.
I’ve had guinea pigs, gerbils, mice, and hamsters but never rats. I still think they are amazing and probably really easy to train, because if my lazy guinea pig learned to follow a target stick, then a rat could do anything!
I have never had a rat as a pet, but I have mice. It’s sad that rats, and mice are both pets, and very popular ones at that, and yet they are still discriminated against and disrespected. It’s very sad when a mouse or rat owner hears about how much people hate animals that could be the ancestors of their pets.
ALL animals are cute, including rats!!
They just do not live long enough to be good pets. They selfishly die.
One of my cats sniffed out a rat under my back deck. I expected to find a rat there, so I checked when all the cats were in the house. It was a whole nest of rats. I didn't really like having them there, but I didn't want to put them at risk so I left them undisturbed. For about a month my cat spent the late afternoon on rat patrol. He's stopped now, so I guess I need to check.
As pets .. cool. As feral, flea ridden, food stealing, nibbling rodents, not so much.
I think the main reason people hate 'em is that they caused millions of people to die. but, that was ages ago and medicine has gotten better, so the statement above still stands. :)
I never had any rats but my friend bred them when I was a kid. I absolutely loved them and the only reason I don't own any now is I don't have the space and I think my cats might try to hurt them. The whole idea that they must be so dangerous because wild ones are dangerous is infuriating. Wolves are dangerous. Feral dogs are dangerous. Yet you don't see people saying everybody is dog is dangerous
I have 4 rats and they are family... they want to hang out with me and my husband all the time
I had two pet rats as a kid - Dot and Dash( because of their markings). Super affectionate and very bright pets! They’d come out when I called their names.
Long story, but a good one! I use to have a pet rat that went every where with me. She use to sit in my hood while I was walking and pop out on to my shoulder for a look every so often if she smelt something. One day I went to a market and she was there in my hood sleeping. I stopped at a stall to take a look and a woman stopped beside me with a toddler in a pushchair. She was wearing strong perfume and Gizmo (She was named after the Gremlin because she had the same colour markings) smelt this and decided to come out for a look. The next thing I knew was this women screaming and running off, quickly followed by a few other people when they realised what she was screaming at. I was left looking at this poor kid left in his pushchair! I stayed with the kid and let Gizmo sit on his lap and stroke him till mum returned about a minute later. She was so clever and loving and I miss her.
Fleas, bubonic plague, sewers, garbage...yeah, great little animals called vermin for a reason.
And what is it that gets an animal (which is only trying to survive like the rest of the creatures on this planet) the title 'vermin'? It's always us. We produced tons of rubbish, pile grains that we have farmed (totally unnatural process) in sheds... and then we label a creature that feeds of the crap we have created as scum. Sorry, it's actually humans who cause plagues, sewers and garbage. We have a habit of creating the right environments for sickness.
Load More Replies...It should be said Ah Rats! not Oh Rats. Plus they are cute critters!
I miss my rats. They're awesome pets and so loving when looked after and handled right. I've never been bitten by a rat despite having them for 20 years.
I love domestic rats but my family has a lot of rat infestations.
My garden has rats, lots of the things. I do not like them but refuse to use torturous poisons on them. To remove them I feed them, gradually drifting food down the riverbank, away from my house.
everyone is freaking out because i got a pet snake. i can see your struggles.
And calling people a rat is derogatory to rats! Most rats are better than ALL politicians!
I agree. Hamsters spend the day spinning a wheel and trying to get out. Rats are like dogs. They just like loving on you.
i have a phobia of rodents. there is no rhyme or reason to it, i just do. but if anyone wants to have a pet rodent, i totally respect that :)
extremely lovable, with a very short lifespan, like hamsters. I had one, I won't ever again.
I didn't know that. There is a six-foot rat snake out back that would love to cuddle with your cute little rat.
I think rats are really cute! People only hate rats because they bite and are just gross, which is actually not true. Rats are like bees, they will only bite you if they feel like that have to.
And they save lives! Rats are used to find bombs that are activated by weight when you step on it. They are too light to activate the bomb but they find it without any mistake, so in those areas (sorry but can't remember where) rats are valuable in saving lives, they are well fed and kept in great conditions. PS rats do not die when searching for bombs, they just find it but don't activate it which is great.
I'd say there's a big difference between nice, cute, clean pet rats, and the ... disgusting, infested rodents with the long naked tails that I meet on the street at night and make me almost scream and puke simultaneously... admittedly I have a huge problem with those, almost a phobia :-(
Yes, if it's similar to a phobia, there's no problem. It's just portraying them as benevolent creatres that just exist to harm us that annoys me.
Load More Replies...I've got three pet rats snuggled up in my shirt right now! ...or I did until just then. Wells decided to come out and inspect my keyboard. She must have heard me typing. Best pets ever, naughtiness included!
It's true. There's a rat, lives across the street from me, funniest guy I've met in a while.
I dunno. They might be cute and all, but if you have spent any length of time in NY I think it is hard to get to the level where you can see that. For me personally I never will nor take the time to differentiate between feral and domesticated rats
This is rich people talk. Rats eat harvested grains, which has been a major problem throughout history.
No rodents in the house, please. Had a couple of field mice that got in through a gap in the patio door/screen. They are very cute, but could not get the urine stains out of the vinyl flooring in the pantry. Yuck.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Sleeping with stuffed animals. You’re never too old for that.
The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
People with the Karen haircut who are actually normal and chill.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
Except an actress should be able to ACT AS IF they have emotions. Especially in movies....

I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

All of these that where mentioned just remind me how great it is that people enjoy different things. A lot of things I wouldnt learn or hear about if someone didnt introduce me to it. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same, acted the same and liked the same things. Love and embrace our differences but try not to be an asshole if someone is not like you or likes things you dont.

I will also add: Lilly Singh. Why is she getting all this hate on the internet? She's worked hard for her success, and anyone who is insecure enough about themselves to criticize her humour, doesn't deserve to watch her videos. As long as what you're doing is not hurting anyone it's fine.
I worked as an hourly worker in some chemical plants & refineries... I got a bachelor's degree in humanities... It was so useless that I couldn't get a job selling insurance on commission with it... so I went to work as a workin' man... I was hated everywhere I worked because the workers didn't have any education beyond high school, and they were jealous and offended that I would dare to work in "their plant". They would tell me to my face that I was a fool for working there with a degree. I got tired of telling them that I was making three or four times what I could get with the useless degree...
I got my AA in social science and humnaities becuase after basic training and tech school I only needed 6 classes to finish it. I went on later and got a bachelors and masters degree in computer programming and IT. Most of the AA was the general ed stuff that all degrees require. Not a useless degree.
