There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.

Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.

We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.

It’s not GMO’s, it’s the fact that if you use them you are tied to very expensive fertilisers or weed killers and if you try to move away from them you’ll be sued by the manufacturer for “stealing” their property rights. Look up Monsanto.

GMO is not GMO. GMO migth merely mean speeding up classical selective breeding with modern methods (desirable). It might mean creating plants based on a "mix and match" of genes (might be desirable, but undesired spread that treats wild forms of a plant can be a problem). It might be creating plants that have high yield but "miracolously" rely on products (such as fertilizers or herbicides) from the very creator of the GMO (undesirable).

One of the first (and in my opinion, most useful) modern genetic modifications of field crops is the insertion of 'BT' genetics. People freak out about scientists "playing god" because they inserted DNA from a bacterium into food plants :D 'BT' is bacillus thuringiensis, which is a natural soil microbe found everywhere. As part of its metabolism it produces a protein that is particularly indigestible to many insect larvae, but is digested by mammals like any other protein. That bacterium has been cultured and used as a pesticide for generations, and is even used today in organic agriculture. You can probably buy it at your local hardware store. Scientists took the genes responsible for making that protein, and inserted them into the plants themselves. This is great for everyone involved, farmers burn much less fuel not having to run another field operation to apply a pesticide, their yield is improved, and there isn't an explosion of Lepidopterous larvae to affect other plants.

The GMO model is heavily forcing cultivators to rely on the associated pesticides that the same companies selling GMO seeds sell, making them slaves to their corporate strategy. Moreover, tempering with the dna of plants to reproduce them with an emphasis on certain traits (ex: resistance to insects) without letting natural selection take its course has in many cases lowered their general quality. That is why an apple grown in 2021 sold in supermarkets can be much less nutritious than the same fruit was in 1950 https://heated.medium.com/todays-apple-may-contain-38-percent-fewer-nutrients-than-the-same-one-in-1950-530d885a07f1

Most people are not opposed to manipulation of traits in foods like has been done by older methods, but mixing in bacterial genes, for example, is not what they want to see done. There is as much evidence against safety in GMOs as there is info that the companies use for propaganda to expand support! The companies involved are not trustworthy!

The problem is only with certain GMOs, specifically the ones which are engineered to be lethal to insects. These can have a negative impact on many species of insect which are beneficial to the environment, because many of the insects which feed on crops are related to important pollinators like butterflies, beetles, and flies. The biggest problem is not the crops themselves - they are all safe to eat. It is the fact that they are bred to be monocultures, to be sterile, and other such traits which destroy the soil and drive small farmers out of business.

GM crops are almost entirely developed and marketed to provide resistance to RouneUp and neonicotinoid pesticides. The GM crops themselves may not be actually toxic - but their growth almost invariably involves massive use of toxic chemicals that pollute air and water, exterminate benificial species, and cause human cancers and endocrine diseases. Sure, those effects don't come from consuming GM crops; but they are the unavoidable side-effects of growing them.

More food does not mean less starvation. It is creating a massive imbalance in the world. Our problem is the over consumerism of developed and developing countries. If we had more sustainable systems in place, we wouldn't need all those crops and we will have more poeple fed around the world. Unfortunately we don't live in utopia

My main gripe with GMO's is all the patents involved - the way someone can plant GMO corn and then sue the next door neighbour for also growing that corn when they do it inadvertently because of pollen transfer or something. The way Monsanto (and a few others, I "hope") owns everything and you can't just save seeds from one crop to sow the next, because you have to pay the "owners of the patented crop" to use it. The main problem, in other words, is human greed.

They are some good points in favor of GMOs indeed. However, the problem is deeper than that. The whole relationship between humankind and the rest of nature is twisted. Considering that it's up to us to modify and accommodate our environment to our own exclusive profit is bad. Dedicating more and more space to just a few profitable species where millions of species used to live is bad. We won't get away with it in the long run.

Well, but "slowly" is the key. With common cultivation you can't just take rye and make it grow pink seeds, you can usually only enhance what the plants already offer via selective breeding. And it takes enough time to see the effects on human long-term consumption. On the other hand, if you just pick some DNA sequences and replace it with another, can you really tell the consequences? Long-term tests are never done because they're not economically viable. Besides, the biggest issue with GMOs is the symbiotic and massive use of all-killing pesticides that are absolutely devastating to the environment, workers and people in close proximity. Also, the last sentence is absolute bs, we already produce more than enough to feed everyone, but the distribution is unfair, a lot of it is used to produce more luxurious food (80% of soy production goes into feeding animals) and much is simply thrown away.

They are ruining the ecology. Instead of having borders of wild flowers the gmo crops are planted to the edges of roads. In the fields it is absolutely quiet. There is no wildlife inside the field. No weeds, no nothing. This is the biggest threat to such things like the monarch butterfly which faces extinction largely in part to gmos. Because gmos are herbicide resistant.

I think this depends a bit in what GMO. To actually make the plants better, or resistant to disease or pests so you do not need pesticides, great. The Monsanto way, to make food resistant to pesticides so you kan drench them in it, not good at all, and harmful to the environment and your health...

Continuing....Central America (not South, oops) and it is a great example of selective breeding. What is different from that method is that geneticists have inserted/ deleted certain genes into the DNA of different crop species in order to take a shortcut towards increasing yield. Some species of GMO foods are changed to be resistant or hazardous to various rusts/ musts/and microorganisms. Some are made more drought tolerant or produce more vitamins. Some just increase the size and number of seeds in cereal grains.

Any food that survive glyposite after being soaked in it several times during growth holds to much of the poison to be safe over a period of years. Just read the freaking lable. You have to wear hazmat suits to be around it.

Youre not a scientist, its already been tested. Youd have to eat all the bread in the store to get that much bad pesticide in your system

The biggest problem with GMOs is how it's patented/protected in courts. Unfortunately, the debate gets fixated on health effects while corporations declare ownership of specific genes and traits. "Oh what's that? Some of my patented genetic material floated into your wheat field and pollinated your crops? With you pay me a licensing fee or we take your whole crop!"

My problem with the GMOs is not that they are a danger, but everything becomes homogenized. When I was a kid, bananas were sweeter. That variety of banana died out, and was replaced by today's variety. Though heartier, it is not tastier. This happens with tomatoes too. It is almost like the GMOs are blander.

Gmo fruit is tastier. Look at the banana. And guess what. That delectable "artificial banana" flavor is really derived from a banana species that died out. Lets bring back that banana.

Disagree on that one because doing it quicker may make the side effects accumulate before you realize they're there. And those who rely on GMO crops become dependant on their provider while many old varieties of crops die out, ever reducing the gene pool.

Go do some research, GMOs are like drug addicts, heavy chemical inputs needed. What happens when farmer's can't afford it? Look up Farmer Suicide in India. Also look up Percy Schmeiser, Monsanto sent ex-RCMP to terrorize him and destroyed his organic Canola crop. Also look up US corn subsidy, effect on Mexico. Giant monocrops are how we got the Irish potato famine.

When I go to stores and they have signs over fruits and veggies that say "organic" and "non-GMO" I always ask the produce manager "where are the factory produced fruits and veggies"? Because ALL FRUITS AND VEGGIES are organic. And mankind has been genetically manipulating fruits, grains and veggies since they began agriculture. In addition the first genetic "scientist" was Mendel.

Finally I can say this: this is mostly a European problem where they have this irrational fear of GMOs.

I always figured the Nickleback hate was just a meme and everyone is pretty much neutral on them.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.

And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.

I do love that men can dress as women with beards and by embraced by the world, but god forbid a teenager wears clothing she feels comfortable in whilst making some good damn music.

How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.

People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.

I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
