There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.

Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.

We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.

I'm still confused as to why so many people are so concerned with the faith of others. I wholeheartedly support your right to believe, or not believe, in whatever you choose. Shouldn't I be afforded that same right?

I see, that problem comes from “the true believers”. It does not matter from wich religion. I am a believer. But i dont go to church and i am not being a fanatic. I believe in my way and never force people to be. But those true believers, they have their rules and if you dont go by their rules, they judge you, they can be really unpleasant. And this is the problem. They are so entitled. And second, politics should never be done according to religion. Religion should be a private matter and should not be forced on anyone…

I like the way Ricky Gervais puts it. When you look at all religions combined there are approx 3000 different Gods. Most religious people only believe in 1 God so they dismiss the other 2999. Atheists dismiss just one more.

Exactly. It is also very sad how a supposedly omnipotent god (talking about the Christians here because it’s the one I have closer) only showed himself to a very select group of people. Condemning the other humans in the planer to hell instead of doing miracles all over the planet and sending multiple profets.

People don't like that it is possible to be moral, good, and virtuous simply because that is who they want to be; not because "God" told them that's how to behave. Some people don't need "God" to not be a murder or rapist. Lol

I am a Christian and I would say the biggest problem with Christianity are Christians. The small percentage that loudly look down on everyone else makes us all look like bigoted jerks. Its not my job to judge you or to tell you that you have to do anything. My job is to live my life and show love to EVERYONE... not just the people who I deem not "heathen".

There is an important distinction to be made here, Atheists (A-theists) do not believe in the existence of any deity. Antitheists (Anti-Theists) are actively opposed to beliefs in deities. They are absolutely different, in the way that asocial people do not seek social interaction, and antisocial people seek to actively oppose society.

As a Christian part of my understanding of human nature is that we are generally made with an idea of right and wrong. Doesn't matter what you believe, that sense is still there. People who need God to tell the difference are messed up.

I have heard the argument made that if you don't believe in a specific god, you may as well be an atheist, in the eyes of someone who believes in that specific god. Because you don't believe in "God". You know; the Real one. Even if you claim to believe in a god, if it isn't the right one, it doesn't count as believing in a god. This is not just the US; let's not forget the Middle East and parts of Africa. They whack your head off for that stuff there. In the US, they just stigmatize you.

It would seem from this post that atheism exists everywhere. So does belief in some religion. No one should force their opinions on others about this. Everyone has the right to their OWN beliefs and opinions. Respect that. I am a person of faith, but I hold to respect. It's about how you treat others. There are atheists that treat others like crap. But, there are also so many atheists who are good, kind, moral people who lead good lives. There are people of faith (any faith) who are good, kind and moral people who live and let live. But, there are people who believe in God and then proceed to inform me that I am condemned to hell if.......or they act with unbelievable cruelty in the name of "god". I have an issue with that, not atheists.

Been, well, anywhere in America? I regularly get death threats because I don't believe in someone's God. The number of times "good, loving Christians" have told me to "put a gun in your mouth and shoot yourself" when I say "No, I don't go to church," or "No, I no longer hold any religious beliefs" or "I am an ex-Christian" far outnumbers the times said Christians have been kind and loving in the model of Jesus.

Why do you hate homosexuals claiming that "God's does not like them" if that's what they choose to be under freewill (assuming that homosexuality is not part of the creation and they choose to be like that). Isn't that contradictory? (among 100s other contradictions i have found on their arguments)

Plus, most Atheists and Agnostics did try several different religions before deciding on none, but gleaned the best guidelines from them along the way. For example, the Golden Rule, which appears in nearly every religious text, makes perfect sense in a secular way as well as a religious one. So, it’s not like we’re anarchists who want to live in chaos. We want get along peacefully with other people too. We just don’t want to fight wars to force them to live by our rules (though, if you think about it, most do already anyway). Oh, and Agnostics are not Atheists!

Even dated an atheist who did his best to try and change but i never forced him to accommodate my faith. Freedom of religion? Nah Now that im not religious, it's a different story....

It's the rule that you MUST tell everyone you meet that you are an atheist that is annoying.

Most atheists don't mention that they're atheists in casual conversation. There's just no reason to. We generally only let it be known we're atheists when religious people try to force their beliefs onto us. If every atheist you meet makes it a point to tell you he/she is an atheist, perhaps the problem is you.

In some parts of the US, the “offensive” atheists are pretty much the same as the “existing” atheists. Polls show them as a danger to the nation.

I'll never understand the concept of being part of a group that exists purely based on their lack of belief for something. It's bizarre. Many atheists I've met are so passionate about the fact they don't believe something to be true. Even have a name for it.. Its hilarious. If you don't believe in something there's nothing to discuss

Well, I don't understand the concept of being part of a group that exists purely based on the belief there is a God which never has been proved. Not even in theory.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved Reading.

Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.

Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.

There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.

They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.

I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.

35 Things That Get A Lot Of Hate But It's Undeserved Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.

And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
