There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
Pineapple on pizza. It’s delicious, and if you hate it don’t s**t on people who like it.
Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Sleeping with stuffed animals. You’re never too old for that.
The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
I hate the architecture that is deliberately designed to ensure people can't sleep on benches and places like that. The people that thought those up should be made to sleep on their own spiky monstrosities
Same here in my hometown in Germany. I hate it. So I wrote to the city council about it. No reaction of course.
Load More Replies...Well..I understand it on one hand...but on the other...sorry, guys. I would love to give them food, walk with them to the store and let them buy something. But it makes me re-think it, when I walk a homeless lady, that claims to be pregnant to a shop to let her choose a food - and all the time she was just babble terrible rasist stuff about Vietnamese (we were in their shop, I like to go there, the lady there is always nice and kind) and this p** me off. She was offered a free food to choose. Why to be mean about people who sell it? And stuff like that happened several times to me. Just one guy was great, when I agreed with him to bring him canned food the next day, if he waits there for me at 5pm. He was there and was so nice..
That is very considerate and kind of you to offer to buy them food. People on the street often have a lot of mental health disabilities/disorders that cause them to think their thoughts aloud, have little control/filter of what they're saying and may be talking to voices they are hearing in their head. These disorders and disabilities are more common that it appears in our society. The only difference between the homeless and homed is access to a strong support system and the ability to pay for those treatments. Perhaps they are trying to voice something that happened to them and it's coming out wrong. For the pregnant woman throwing insults on Vietnamese, you could ask why she is thinking like that, for example. I may add, they're struggling just to meet their basic needs and try to hold some pride. Being offered help isn't always viewed to them as welcoming. They're often sleep deprived from being woken throughout the night by police and community watchers. It's torturous.
Load More Replies...I live in Austin, and I'm disgusted by this law. The unhoused aren't evil; not having a permanent home is NOT a moral failing!
the root absolutely needs fixing no question. but where do the people go in the meantime?
Load More Replies...I am not a fan of giving out money. That being said, it is way too easy to dehumanize house-less people. They deserve respect just like everyone else, even if that means stopping, looking them in the eye and telling them politely that you don't have any money. You don't have to give them anything, just don't treat them as sub-human.
See, this makes no sense. If there’s a problem with poverty and homelessness, why do some politicians go so hardcore against them, instituting bans, approving funding for anti-homeless additions to architecture and benches, and just flippantly telling people to get a job and pull themselves up by their bootstraps, when so many politicians—-especially the conservative ones—-are trust fund babies who never had to struggle a day in their lives? Why isn’t more money spent on fixing the core reasons for those problems? Jobs that pay a decent wage, facilities for those with mental health issues that prevent them from living independently, universal healthcare so people aren’t scared of being financially wiped out by medical bills or student debt (when they actually try to do that “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” stuff), and clean, well-kept, and affordable housing everywhere, just to name a few. But no, their philosophy is “I got mine, f**k you”.
Money isn't spent on things like this because there's no profit in it. Also, don't ask me why, but there seems to be a built-in societal need to perpetually punish people for the "crime" of being poor and/or homeless. If one is born into the right socioeconomic class/es and is in no REAL danger of experiencing such things, they'd have no clue what I'm talking about. Suffice it to say that the next clueless twat who mutters in my general direction about "bootstraps" is going to get a boot of their own in a very delicate area.
Load More Replies...Only because a specific location is mentioned that I happen to know. A good portion of the homeless in Austin are actually child predators who are bound by law to remain within the city limits, but required to maintain a certain distance from specific locations and places. As a result, they are living in “tent cities”. It was in the news while I lived there briefly. I could not believe what I was hearing.
Hardly anyone 'wants' to be homeless. But for some reason many of them are treated, as if it was their decision not to have a roof over their heads ... and instead to live on the streets ... and sleep under bridges ... and to beg for money, food or simply for help.
What this Austin pic does not show is the increasingly aggressive panhandling by some tent dwellers and their piles of human feces.
The next time one of these folks attacks you or take a dump on your car you will change your opinion.
Homelessness is one of my biggest fears! It could happen to any of us, its not just drug addicts and people with mental problems its families, and it is not a choice to all who are homeless!
I hate the fact they make being homeless illegal but do nothing to help the homeless.
This is a worldwide issue. I am so fortunate to have a house in which to live where I don't have to worry about bombs falling, invasion by someone trying to take over the government, etc. Each area needs a plan to help the homeless.
with all the abandoned buildings, you'd think cities would allow groups or churches to take them over and make them into living spaces so no one is homeless
Part of the problem is that some homeless don't want to live in houses. They prefer the streets. some have mental issues and this can cause a lot of problems including violence towards others. Any housing offered by councils there have to be rules so they can all reside in the same building in harmony- and that is not always possible. Obviously that does not apply to all h omeless, but to quite a lot.
Load More Replies...That's awful. I really really wish I had the money to build a homeless hub.
Here in Chile, we have a problem with illegal immigrants camping in the middle of the city. I don't know what the authoritie's plan is, but no one chooses to be homeless, let alone in another country.
I agree it's a poor reflection of society that more effort isn't found in finding solutions.
Load More Replies...that's ridiculous gotta help them give them an alternative place before
I feel bad for the older people or mentally challenged, those who cannot afford to have an apartment or extended stay room, or be in a care home. But those who could work, even go around doing yard work for example I don't feel that bad for. And there is a woman a couple miles from me who KEEPS 7 (SEVEN!!) grocery carts full to overflowing along the street, as well as a big chair with a tarp tented over it!! Those things do take money off our property value and degrade our neighborhoods.
Leave them alone! Or at least get them a park or somewhere where they can live in peace. Believe me, they are not enjoying it. I’m sure they would love to have a nice one fireplace in the winter and people who love them. Talk about kicking people when they are down! Sometimes I hate people like that. Help them!
One of the saddest things about this planet is Man's inhumanity to Man.
Texas. Home to that genius Gov. Abbott. And Senator Ted Cruz. A place I would never even want to visit again, let alone live there.
Tis a bad sign when the people who have something, deny those who don't. We all be a product of our environment and perceptions of survival.
Your life can change in an instant and you too could end up homeless on the street. Nothing is set in stone so treat people the way you want to be treated, you could very well end up in their shoes one day
That is so sad. They are human beings that deserve help and respect. NOBODY is immune from being homeless unless you're super rich. Three lost pay cheques and you could loose everything.
We want to know what these people are supposed to do? There's not enough help for the homeless.
In Brazil it is a problem way worst, because among a lot of good folks there are lots (I mean, LOTS) of bad seeds. People who chose to live like this because they always earn stuff from good souls. This is why I chose to never give ANYTHING to anyone in streets. It's sad but I can't see any solution for this horde engulfing the needed
They think homeless "camps" will have an increase in crime, and someone is likely concerned about a property value somewhere. In reality, the homeless are often victims of crime.
S**t. I CANNOT wait to show this to a person I know who also happens to be from Texas. Always spouting off how Texans have huge hearts and love for their fellow man!!!!
Help should always be before punishment! Always, for everyone who doesn't hurt somebody. No matter if it is about homelessness, addiction, both, whatever - and yet every evidence proves that help outperforms punishment in every regard, being a tough mayor, one who "gets things done", is taken for advertising those candidates.
Oregon has a serious homeless issue. Homeless people are allowed to sleep practically anywhere (I’m talking about Eugene,Or)
I feel every country could do more to help their homeless, if only making safe sleeping areas.
They also passed one of the most horrible anti abortion laws in the USA. Texas is crappy
It gets worse here to. I am in swfl and the county I live in is one of the wealthiest in Florida, but have no actual plan to help the homeless.
Apparently here in America, it's illegal to be homeless in some states. What in the actual living f*ck?
2021 and there are still people sleeping rough , WTAF are we doing as a species ?
2021 and it's a LOT worse than it was 5, 10 or 20 years ago where I live in the UK. It's a f*cking disgrace and I'm ashamed of what is happening in my country.
Load More Replies...Homelessness in America. In allegedly the wealthiest country in the world. WTF?
Red states don't care about constitutes if they can't donate bribe money.
It's not the people being there, it's the lack of toilet facilities for those who don't want to leave the streets. Police don't make them leave here in L.A until it's a dire situation with trash and disease, then they sweep the area, but don't have enough places to put the displaced. We are getting more facilities, tiny homes and programs to help, but some just won't take the help. After Reagan closed the mental hospitals, crazy homeless people became the norm. Now, we add 10s of thousands of former homeowners (and tax payers) who lost homes in the last few years, but they DO want help.
It's not the hipsters, it's the old stuffy fuddy duddies
Load More Replies...That’s a lot of hate you have there. I hope life doesn’t hit you with any reversals. It’s often a shorter trip to being homeless than you think.
Load More Replies...Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
People with the Karen haircut who are actually normal and chill.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
Except an actress should be able to ACT AS IF they have emotions. Especially in movies....

I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

All of these that where mentioned just remind me how great it is that people enjoy different things. A lot of things I wouldnt learn or hear about if someone didnt introduce me to it. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same, acted the same and liked the same things. Love and embrace our differences but try not to be an asshole if someone is not like you or likes things you dont.

But if the reason you dont like furries is because you think that kind of stuff is kinda odd and you're just not into it, you're fine, have a nice day.
I will also add: Lilly Singh. Why is she getting all this hate on the internet? She's worked hard for her success, and anyone who is insecure enough about themselves to criticize her humour, doesn't deserve to watch her videos. As long as what you're doing is not hurting anyone it's fine.
I worked as an hourly worker in some chemical plants & refineries... I got a bachelor's degree in humanities... It was so useless that I couldn't get a job selling insurance on commission with it... so I went to work as a workin' man... I was hated everywhere I worked because the workers didn't have any education beyond high school, and they were jealous and offended that I would dare to work in "their plant". They would tell me to my face that I was a fool for working there with a degree. I got tired of telling them that I was making three or four times what I could get with the useless degree...
I got my AA in social science and humnaities becuase after basic training and tech school I only needed 6 classes to finish it. I went on later and got a bachelors and masters degree in computer programming and IT. Most of the AA was the general ed stuff that all degrees require. Not a useless degree.
