There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
Pineapple on pizza. It’s delicious, and if you hate it don’t s**t on people who like it.
Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Yes! I'm starting to think the same. Nothing wrong with doing some new stuff every so often but why forcing myself to do something I do not feel comfortable at all?!
Load More Replies...Same here , just working 9-5, no luxuries, very thankful as lots of people don’t have just the basics I have, just be humble
Exactly. I would like a salary and hours that allow me to pay for a decent size home (1 bedroom, kitchen, living room and maybe 1 guest bedroom) and a tiny terrace. Money enough to pay the basic bills and live without fear of poverty. Besides that I don’t really care. Sadly nowadays even working full time what I described is a dream for a lot of people.
Load More Replies...Life is so much less stressful if you cut out all the “keeping up with the Joneses” crap.
Yes. And now we have So Many Joneses. Before, you had that one neighbor. Now you have Instagram.
Load More Replies...No one knows how difficult could be to reach your desired comfort zone. And yet you have to hear "get out of that comfort zone of yours"... ignorants!
Agreed. I spent most of my life living "outside" my comfort zone. I am now "in it" and if I have any say in it, I'm staying here until I take my last breath. LOL! I've discovered I need very little to keep me happy.
Load More Replies...I was raised to be "the best", "ambitious", "competitive" and all that crap that never, ever interested me. It's a good thing I had a strong personality since I was little, because I never gave in to other people's expectations and eventually my mom just gave up. I never cared. I've done whatever I want always.
Yeah, it kind of bugs me that people always ask, "Done anything EXCITING lately?" Like just appreciating a cool summer morning or biking to the beach or taking my mom out for lunch isn't enough. Has to be EXCITING or EXTREME!!
That's why I'm inclined to say things like, "Yes! I had the most enchanting bike ride today!"
Load More Replies...I grew up in a wealthy home. However, my parents focused their resources on education, travelling and good food (they loved trying different restaurants or types of food). I was lucky to have the opportunity to study a good career in a prestigious university. I have a normal job and earn well. I could have taken a different life, but I chose a simple yet fulfilling life (for me). Why? Because I honestly don't need more. I don't have the need to own things to be happy. I don't want to be a manager or escalate a corporate ladder. I just want to be me and live according to my true needs. Most of the things you own will end up in the bin one day; experiences will follow you for life. I think it is better to spend your time and resources in stuff that add true value: good nourishing food, educacion, experiences alone or with people you love, learning new things and skills, helping others and a comfy bed to sleep well.
Super this. I have more than i want and people look at me like i'm crazy for not trying to get more/have more/do more. i just want some peace and quiet in a simple place :)
I never understood why people need to get out of their comfort zone. I like comfort and predictability. Should be nothing wrong with that.
All most people really want. I can't wait for people who had no business being "woke" to go back to sleep. Everything isn't as dire as they're being told, and the leaders fomenting them aren't giving them answers beyond "other people want to kill you". 🙄
Do what you want to make you happy as long as its not harmful to others.
Or live, as best they can, the lives they are, for reasons unknown living.
People are astonished when they enter my home. I donated my TVs to a local children's hospital when I moved cross-country and just never bothered to replace them. I don't have a sound system, I don't have a game console... I have an old computer. And a shwack-ton of books. Any thief breaking in would be very disappointed.
Sometimes leading a "wilder" life leads to problems. Like I know people who have done more than me and made worse choices and more wild but now they're in their late 30's-40's and broke with nothing to show for it and always ask to borrow from me.
Being content with what you have is a much better mental state than constantly judging your lifestyle against others.
I don't need all world's money I just need enough to fulfill my dreams!
My asshole dad thought I wasn't hotblooded because my life didn't involve foing out much, meeting friends often or taking part in extra-curricular stuff. That and I was also expected to be "the one who brings the family out of poverty". Result? I became socially withdrawn and eventually dropped out of my Engineering College, which was one of the best in the Maharashtra State. I won't deny that I'm partially responsible, and I am the one who has to bear the result, but I think things would've been different if I had more emotional support.
A quiet and easy life is underapreciated. There are nothing that sugest that people who are allways "up and about" would be any happier. It's more the oposite, as a a matter of fact.
I hate it when i felt guilty for not being as ambitious as most of my friends. I like being comfortable, having just enough.
I have a small, basic house, a 10 year old, paid off truck, a career, and money in the bank, and a few good friends and acquaintances. I don't want for much else.
I's be willing to bet that people who denigrate "normal" and "boring" lives are those who have achieved "success" and "luxury" and are truly miserable in their existence. They simply can't admit it because of what they want others to believe.
That sounds like a defense mechanism. Because you need to believe it’s bad to have money, that people with money are sad. Otherwise you’d be sad.
Load More Replies...I am always told that I need to get out more and I am boring, I am good with that. I have an entire house of things to always keep me busy. And if I want to go somewhere I go, I guess there just arent many places I want to go. Its never for financial reasons I just have everything I need at home, so I guess that makes my life boring.
I mean i want a fancy lifestyle but i dont make fun of people with smaller aspirations. Its not nice. Its kinda stupid
That is all I want a simple life with my close circle of loved ones and as little stress as possible. When I was young I wanted to be rich and famous, now I am in my forties and I just want to not worry about how I am going to pay my bills and maybe go out for dinner and buy a video game every once in a while.
In high school I had a Philosophy teacher that during one class asked us to tell him what would be our ideal scenario, like, our perfect life. And I said that being home would be it. And he gave me this speech about how wrong I was, and scolded me for not wanting something extravagant like living in a mansion in some rich country, or flying to the moon, or being in some vacation spot, or something. So he basically wanted us to come up with something like that that would require a lot of effort to achieve or whatever, and I was like, I mean, that's nice, but nothing would beat being home without nothing to do.
Everything is a matter of taste. And there's no right and wrong when it comes to taste :)
Yesss. People ask me why I don’t have insta and Twitter. I just don’t want that hassle in my life. And I don’t wanna be stinking rich either. Just wanna chill.
I agree 100%. I wanted to travel and see the world, so I did (I was lucky), but I would never rag on those who don't wish to travel or "climb the ladder." After all, it's only been in the last century that people are expected to improve "everything" in their lives, like their standard of living, etc. Before television, and advertisements telling people what they HAD to own and had to do, people lived happy, quiet lives and were quite satisfied with that life.
I dislike consumerism. I have roof above my head, healthy food and healthy family and don't need to prove myself to anyone! Appreciate simple things in life as many don't even have basics.
In the US a lot of the population has reached a higher material standard of living, especially when compared to the rest of the world. This gives many the impression you are nobody if you don't reach some arbitrary height of financial comfort, that you might be too lazy, too stupid, too boring, too cowardly, too average, too ' fill in the blank ' since you didn't dream big enough to reach for the stars, you know, the ol' in America you can be anything you want to be BS. The fact is many are perfectly fine living a mediocre standard and living safe and secure in a time and place that anyone from the 17th Century would be in total awe of. The culture of stardom here leads to a whole lot of unnecessary insecurity, envy, and jealousy IMO
I know a lot of people who are well-off whose money has never brought them the happiness many poorer people have every day.
Those of us who live more extravagant lives really appreciate you. You need to exist for us to exist.
And ironically, every, single, person I have ever met, that " lived like this", hands down, were the happiest, fulfilled, and most content people I have ever met in my life. Happier than any of the people striving for the next level job, car, house, ect. Ect. Don't get me wrong- it's good to have goals and aspirations....and I hate to say this, but I am being honest- the absolute contentment that some people have, with having a beat up, rusting, pick up truck, living in a teeny house that has been handed down to them for generations, maybe missing some shingles, and a simple garden in the backyard can spark such joy that they want for nothing, at times I envy them. On top of that, they are the most sincere people I have ever known. Maybe it's because they are truly happy. Maybe I need to learn from them.
NORMIES ! What a wonderful word for those who were previously called "weird" because they did not act as others deemed fit. As a lifetime "abno" (abnormal), who hurts no one while enjoying a life of a semi-hermit, I applaud this new title.
99% of people lead "normal", "boring" life. How many people you know that climbed mount Everest? Vacation in Iceland doesn't count.
As a teenager you could not keep me in, dancing, drinking, messing with my mates. Now I have matured (?) a little I prefer more intellectual pursuits. Been there, done that, wore the T-shirt............
I live in a cabin in the woods. No running water. I bathe in collected rainwater. I make beer, practise with my bow and enjoy my life with my girlfriend and my dog. I have an outdoor job and a cheap car. Nothing could make me give this up for a mortgage, kids and going back to an office environment.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Sleeping with stuffed animals. You’re never too old for that.
The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
People with the Karen haircut who are actually normal and chill.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
Except an actress should be able to ACT AS IF they have emotions. Especially in movies....

I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

All of these that where mentioned just remind me how great it is that people enjoy different things. A lot of things I wouldnt learn or hear about if someone didnt introduce me to it. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same, acted the same and liked the same things. Love and embrace our differences but try not to be an asshole if someone is not like you or likes things you dont.

Boomers/Millenials/Karens. Particularly on this site. In fact, let's just ban these terms completely and try to see the individuals around us without prejudice.
Just because someone doesn't "embrace" something does not mean they HATE it.
FURRIES ARE MISUNDERSTOOD. NOT ALL FURRIES ARE PERVERTS. NOT ALL FURRIES ARE INTO HEAT. NOT ALL FURRIES ARE LGBTQ. HOW DO I KNOW? IM A FURRY. I HAVE MULTIPLE FRIENDS WHO ARE FURRIES. ALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE STRAIGHT. GET THAT GUNK OUTTA YOU. But if the reason you dont like furries is because you think that kind of stuff is kinda odd and you're just not into it, you're fine, have a nice day.
I will also add: Lilly Singh. Why is she getting all this hate on the internet? She's worked hard for her success, and anyone who is insecure enough about themselves to criticize her humour, doesn't deserve to watch her videos. As long as what you're doing is not hurting anyone it's fine.
I worked as an hourly worker in some chemical plants & refineries... I got a bachelor's degree in humanities... It was so useless that I couldn't get a job selling insurance on commission with it... so I went to work as a workin' man... I was hated everywhere I worked because the workers didn't have any education beyond high school, and they were jealous and offended that I would dare to work in "their plant". They would tell me to my face that I was a fool for working there with a degree. I got tired of telling them that I was making three or four times what I could get with the useless degree...
I got my AA in social science and humnaities becuase after basic training and tech school I only needed 6 classes to finish it. I went on later and got a bachelors and masters degree in computer programming and IT. Most of the AA was the general ed stuff that all degrees require. Not a useless degree.
