There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
Pineapple on pizza. It’s delicious, and if you hate it don’t s**t on people who like it.
Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Please stop making things "American Problems!" There are always going to be people that hate things across the globe.
Load More Replies...This doesn't bother me, but for pete's sake pull up your dang pants. Nobody's belt should be around their thighs
The only time I hear this being a problem is when kids in US schools get criticised for it.
I thought it was weird that I've never heard of this being an issue in real life and only became aware of it through the internet over the last 6 months. Then again I'm in the UK.
Load More Replies...This really bothered certain people?? But it’s also a problem if you don’t wear one
I hear all the time, like US schools not letting girls wear certain types of shirts because it would "distract boys" which is disgusting because if young boys choose to sexualize girls that's their problem
ya and also cuz it might distract teachers *shudders*
Load More Replies...It comes from my grandparent's generation when clothing expectations were more elaborate and strict, where a tank-top was itself considered to be underwear. To them, it was frustrating enough to see people walking around "nearly naked" and then to see their actual base layer of underwear in addition to that was irritating to them. As another example: you see men wearing suspenders as a fashion accessory today, but in their time suspenders were part of ones underwear, and needed to be concealed beneath a vest or coat. People are clinging to the views imparted to them as children.
Load More Replies...In Italy there is not all this fuss on the bra straps that you can see. Indeed a few years ago it was absolutely fashionable to show them.
I don't care that mine show, but I hate when they show because they're slipping. So uncomfortable.
And so many bras, even the inexpensive ones, are made with really pretty straps anyway, it’s sometimes hard to tell them from the shirt or dress straps—-and sometimes the bra straps are prettier!
I am not agreeing or disagreeing, but the idea is that bras are underwear...UNDER wear. Personally, I don't care if you choose not to wear one at all.
When I was younger I would always use a strapless bra when wearing tops and dresses with spaghetti straps. I began to notice that not everyone did that. I assumed that everyone found it perfectly acceptable to have your bra strap showing. So I don't believe this is even a problem, people do it, and I have never heard anyone complain about it.
older lady in our office was scandalized when one of the student assistants had bra strap and a little bit of the back showing (due to unfortunate planning) and wanted me to do something about it. I tried explaining that it was a sensitive issue and that we could get in trouble and she thought i meant i was agreeing with her, that we could get in trouble for the student having showing bra strap. she was gobsmacked when i said it was that we could get in trouble for trying to tell a student how to dress. times change.
My only issue is that if her bra is riding that high, chances are it doesn't fit right. 80% of women wear ill-fitting bras.
It's so hard for some of us to find the right fit, though, esp. low on money. Usually my size/styles is/are out almost anywhere I go-for the affordable brands. Very stressful, often.
Load More Replies...I don’t really mind if my bra strap shows. I mean everyone knows you wear a bra, and the straps are to thin anyways, you barely notice.
The problem as I see it, is that designers design their clothes as if bras didn't exist. You'll get a nice dress or top, but when you put it on the look is ruined because 80% of your bra is showing. I don't know what these people are thinking, honestly.
It looks like you didn’t bother to think your outfit through. It also looks really messy and altogether lazy. (I’m Australian, female and I wear suitable bras) Sometimes it’s not possible to find a bra that is the right cut and has thin enough straps and that’s ok. But it just doesn’t look nice.
I'm 53 and grew up in the Midwest and yes this was seen as improper. It wasn't till I went to Europe a few times in my late 20s and 30s did I see other women in these countries didn't care. Now I don’t.
I don't see why you're being downvoted just for telling your experience!
Load More Replies...Nobody has a problem with that in everyday life. The only exception - if you have an evening dress with open shoulders and you actually want them completely open, without any straps showing. There are see-through re-attachable straps for this. But it's just an aesthetical problem, it's not like somebody's going to shame you for your bra straps.
I personally don't like that on myself, but on others I COULDN'T CARE LESS
I can't stand that. It's underwear. I don't want to see your underwear.
I can't stand that, either. It's underwear. I don't want to see your underwear.
Yeah I don't really get this one. The f**k are women supposed to do about it?
They used to be considered untidy and were all white and didn't look nice sticking out. Aesthetically, I think they should match the clothing as in this photo. But that is only what appeals to my eyes.
Of course, just like when you wear the trousers barely over your knees, and the nickers are shown. It is only fabric, for gods sake. Or when your skiirt is so short, the safety cord for your tampon hangs down and you can see it: it is only cotton, for crying out loud!
I'm a woman and I hate straps showing..... that's why they make different styles.
Now-a-days no one cares what shows! Why? It's a waste of time. No one cares!!!
Well you don't go around with your panty waistband showing, do you? Underwear should be UNDER> It's not a big deal, but it's a deal. Also I am so over females who always wear shorts/blouses/dresses that show 2/3 or more of their breasts. Are they afraid somebody will mistake them for a man unless they uncover their mammories? What if men went around with 2/3 if their testicles hanging out?
also the fact that some people don't like to wear bras. personally, I HATE bras they suck
At a store a couple of weeks ago, a middle aged woman stopped me to tell me that she could see the strap of my bra peeking out from the collar of my tee shirt. Not sure why she cared, maybe she thought she was doing me a favor by telling me? Either way. It did not offend me any.
Its not a "skin showing" problem. Idk where everyone is getting that from. Growing up in the American south, people saw it as trashy. Wearing a strapless bra shows just as much skin and no one is bothered by that. It's more having a more "put together/classy" look than some Christian bs. Also people everywhere are pretty big on appearances so let's stop trying to pretend its a US issue.
Ikr! Like, wen wear bras all the time and we shouldn't be judged for that! It's a thing that everyone should just get used to since it's happening every day.
How do you feel about the elastic band on my underpants showing? Same principle right?
Yeah, at school my freind ticked off a teacher for wearing a bra over a u-neck shirt that showed the bra straps. It's a peice of cloth I dont get why it makes people angry
I wish bra straps were prettier. That's all I have to say about it.
I wonder if this is about conservative people. I only experienced this a kind of problem if you wanted to enter a church in Italy (middle to southern parts). There they asked you simply put a scarf over you shoulders while visiting and thats it.
Yes but the problem there is not the bra strap per se, but the shoulders showing
Load More Replies...The only time I worry about my bra straps is when I'm at work. No one would care, it's just my choice to dress professionally. Outside of work they usually show all the time, I often incorporate the strap color into my overall outfit. (And I'm American.)
This is still punching up. And your country is a global issue. I don't think you would all be this pressed of you couldn't feel the truth of the hot mess you've become. Trust me, Canada has some serious issues we should be ashamed of. Difference is most of us are ashamed, admit we suck, and are working to fix it. Except Alberta.
Growing up in the 70s, it was an implied sluttiness or slovenliness, to have your underwear showing. Another excuse for rape, an immodesty. I can't do it myself, but do understand fashion and changing times. Yet it still makes me feel uncomfortable.
As I never met anyone having issue with that I assume it's an US-Problem. I have even an idea why it might be issue for some people; I find those straps showing kinda erotic. So prude people may hate it
Is it part of a cohesive look? In many cases, visible bra straps spoil the effect of spaghetti straps, strapless, and off-the-shoulder tops. I haven't seen many women show bra straps in a stylish manner. Or, as Jeff Foxworthy put it, "If you wear a strapless bra with a bra that isn't, you might be a redneck!" That said, I agree that the fixation we see at US schools is absurd. "The boys might not be able to control themselves" is not a valid reason to set a girl home to change.
If you have large size of..you know, there are no strapless bras. I have never seen them in bigger size than C cups.

The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
People with the Karen haircut who are actually normal and chill.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
Except an actress should be able to ACT AS IF they have emotions. Especially in movies....

I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

I worked as an hourly worker in some chemical plants & refineries... I got a bachelor's degree in humanities... It was so useless that I couldn't get a job selling insurance on commission with it... so I went to work as a workin' man... I was hated everywhere I worked because the workers didn't have any education beyond high school, and they were jealous and offended that I would dare to work in "their plant". They would tell me to my face that I was a fool for working there with a degree. I got tired of telling them that I was making three or four times what I could get with the useless degree...
I got my AA in social science and humnaities becuase after basic training and tech school I only needed 6 classes to finish it.
