I agree, too many times people feel entitled due to their age. You don't owe anyone anything. Congrats on the souvenir and the story you will be able to tell your friends and family.

Sometimes, we're discouraged from expressing our unpopular opinions because of the adverse reactions we might get from the people around us. Whether we’re talking about politics, religion, or popular culture, sharing our deepest beliefs can make someone feel pretty irritated.

However, while some end up scratching their heads from confusion, others see a like-minded person and gladly show their support in heated discussions. After all, a controversial point of view does not instantly mean that it’s uncommon. When you push your fears of being the odd one to the side, it’s much likely you'll encounter others sharing the same thoughts as you.

Brandwatch, a digital consumer intelligence company, was on a mission to investigate the most popular unpopular opinions on social media. They looked at consumers’ mentions from January 1 to June 30, 2020, excluding news, retweets, and shares. Results showed that 1.6M people shared their controversial beliefs in this period. Also, there were 34% more mentions during the lockdown compared to the four months prior.

Greed and narcissism... it's sad, but it's human nature. The majority of the people out there are fake as heck, and will do things like posting videos of themselves crying on the internet as PR moves, to help promote and enhance their brands, to help them gain those clicks, likes, follows, and subscribes. Even more sad is that there ARE the odd few out there who honestly have no one and no where else to turn to, and are using the internet to reach out. But those odd genuine few are usually buried and overshadowed by all the loud popular influencers out there, with their TikToks and viral videos and their memes.

Harassment is the right word. What happened to Diana and other famous people with the paparazzi actually haunting them, spying and giving no Fu*ks. But here's a thought: Who the hell buys those rag mag's is an accomplice bc if they stop buying that filth then the paparazzi will (nearly) go away or at least be way less.

When it comes to the topics people touch on, the top ones were about characters in pop culture, TV shows, dislike of fandoms, and books. People shared their complaints about some of the bestsellers of the century and aired their grievances about how some shows have become outdated. For example, 34K mentions called out Friends "for being hugely popular, despite some aspects not being acceptable today."

The researchers also looked into Reddit, where 958K users shared their gripes. "It seems like lockdown got to Reddit users, too. Posts to r/UnpopularOpinions increased 105%." They found that many of these mentions touched on things that happened on the platform itself. Most of them were focused on sports players, subreddits, and seeing change as not being good.

So while it can be fun to share your controversial views online, they also let others say opposing views, have heated discussions, and see things from different perspectives. Anna Akbari, P.hD., is a sociologist, writer, and speaker who shared her thoughts on why unpopularity isn’t necessarily a bad thing in a piece on The Psychology Today

She explained that if we want to be happy, successful, and feel of service, we don’t actually need to appeal to the masses. "See, we’re complicated beings, each with our own unique experiences, full of biases and contradictions and, hopefully, a point of view," she wrote. "Having a point of view is a good thing, even when that view isn’t universally embraced."

100% - the cheater is the one at fault - unless the people they cheated with is also someone who you have a relationship with then it's equal blame as they both owe you loyalty. I've never understood the blame being passed to the person they cheat with, and it's usually women who blame the other woman when their guy cheats - I sure there's a patriarchal link to all that that could be deciphered but seriously, they're just a shitty person if they knew he was involved with someone - if they didn't then they're just as much a victim in it all. This idea that men can't help themselves if offered sex has to stop - you don't accidentally have sex - yeah, you may regret it after but you totally know what you're doing while you're doing it.

While we can wholeheartedly stand by one issue, we can also not see eye to eye on another. "Agreeing to disagree on most things in life is fine—assuming it doesn’t restrict the liberty or human rights of others. It’s when we start to think that we need to agree on everything all the time to merely function together that we get into trouble," Akbari mentioned.

Needless to say, popularity isn’t essentially bad. Lots of things that are commonly and generally accepted by our society are considered as "safe". Akbari explained that we don’t have to immediately or categorically reject the popular stuff but rather "selectively embrace it, or at least occasionally challenge it."

Yes, it really should be free. I have been in therapy on and off for years and it has been free (/paid by taxes). It's due to mental health issues so free healthcare = free mental healthcare. I learned a lot and cope much better. I wish it was available to all who needs it. To hear that people live with anxiety, ptsd, depression etc and can't afford therapy to learn how to cope better is really, REALLY sad.

However, if your views are not clinging to the mainstream popular or if they tend to stir some unexpected or even rude reactions, "don't despair. You don’t need to bend toward conformity, and you may even be able to cash in—financially and socially—on stepping outside the conventional bounds."

She mentioned two rules that people who tend to lean into unpopularity should remember. The first one is that you should actually believe what you’re saying or doing. "Disagreeing for the sport of it is annoying and, rightfully, no one likes or respects you if you do that. So stop it," the sociologist advised.

Retired teacher here, so let me weigh in on the realities. For elementary school kids, I'd overwhelmingly vote yes. Younger kids want to please the teacher; they want to be around the teacher, around other kids, in class. HOWEVER, as someone who taught middle and high school for 26 years, this does not work at all. By that time, there are a lot of kids who are looking for any way to leave the classroom. Yes, there are times they need to use the bathroom, but quite often they also want to socialize. There have been groups in certain years (not all by any means) that texted and met up in bathrooms and fought, too. It helps if a teacher has a sign in/out pass, or gives a certain number of tickets per month. Other children who don't have to use the bathroom COULD give a classmate a ticket if they felt generous.

"The second rule is to embrace your unpopular opinions with the knowledge and grace that not everyone shares your point of view," she continued. This rule can be quite tough since we humans have a general tendency to want others to agree with us. After all, it makes us feel heard and valued.

However, following this guideline "starts with a promise to both give up convincing other people to buy into your less popular opinions and to stop shaming them for their own thoughts and actions."

My previous boss (who was an absolute jerk!) used to say "there's a line of people waiting to take your place, if you quit." I did quite eventually. Seven years later and... my place is still unoccupied. And not just mine - two other people also quit from that office, and replacements could never be found. Or someone would start and then quit a month later due to the conditions. I guess the line of people for my spot turned out to be a bit too short ;)

Or, stop suing everyone for making mistakes. Yes there are serious negligence cases, but they're a lot less common than the cases where "negligence" is claimed, but it's just an honest mistake. Americans really need to stop that s**t.

I live in the US and I don't personally know anyone who has ever sued anyone. As a matter of fact, most of us can't afford to take anybody to civil court. With attorneys and court fees it is unaffordable. But there are a few rich assholes like Trump that will sue anyone that pisses them off. The vast majority of Americans are unable to do that.

Likewise the police. They should be required to carry malpractice insurance. Often it is an officer with numerous complaints in his file who uses excessive force. If they were faced with higher premiums every time they screw up they would either do better or quit. And, any judgements for malfeasance should come first from their retirement funds and second from the police department budget. As it is now, the city pays settlements out of its general funds. So money that might have been used for parks, libraries, mental and physical health programs, and helping the homeless and disadvantaged, is wasted because some D--bag in a uniform with a gun thought the law they swore to uphold doesn't apply to them.

Absolutely. And any settlements need to come from the collective pension fund. That way the good ones (yes there are a few) are hopefully more likely to stand up to the bad ones.

I mean, that's literally what post-trial motions and the appellate courts are for (in the US). On Appeal, you don't argue the facts of the case again, you argue that the law was not properly interpreted or carried out. In a jury trial the judge isn't passing the sentence or the verdict, they're a facilitator making sure the rules are followed by all involved (lawyers, jury, clients, witnesses, etc...). In a bench trial, they do make the final decision, but, again, if you don't like the outcome you have an automatic right to appeal to the next highest court. There are so many people involved in the trial process you can't solely blame the judge for the outcome. Are you going to sue your lawyers, witnesses, jury (if applicable), the other side's lawyers, etc... every time a case doesn't go your way? If there was negligence you actually can lodge a complaint with the appropriate oversight body like the Bar Association and they take those SO seriously.

I can't up-vote this enough!! The U.S. judicial system is a JOKE! When a judge blatantly gives the defendant in a child abuse case every opportunity, even if it goes against established practices/precedents, and then contradicts themselves in their acquittal opinion, definitely deserves to be sued! Studies show less than 5% of women/girls are lying about being abused. A judge who has sat on the bench for 20+ years should know that! Always vote NO to retain judges! Get the old, white men off their high-horses, and get fresh blood in the courts! (And yes, I'm a white man.)

All positioms with power and/or authority need to be held to a higher standard. Not just judges. Prosecutors, Police, Social workers, politicians etc. If you have the ability to ruin someones life you need to be held to a stricter standard and code of conduct. No immunity. No exception or exemption. Stricter standards period. Any.leadership position has inherent responsibilities but everyone avoids these and focuses on the perks and benefits with no accountability. This is the main cause of corruption, loss of trust in authority, etc.

Perfect example: judge Reva Goetz who authorized putting Britney Spears under a conservatorship without a capacity declaration, without allowing her to hire her own counsel or at least choose the conservator (she explicitly stated she did not want her father to be the conservator). 13 years later, and only after a social media movement and a couple of years of litigation, the conservatorship was terminated because there was no reason for it, but to this day there hasn't been accountability for the judge that allowed this for several years, and the court appointed lawyer that did everything to keep Britney in the dark about her rights

The difference here is that a doctor has to make a decision or the person will die. A judge if such conditions are set upon him will just not make decisions anymore then they have to. And we need judges to help protect defendants rights. Not all of them do, but it is only a few judges that are s**t, we shouldn't hamper the rest that aren't. Same reason you don't get to sue the prosecutor, some are garbage but the good ones are trying to find the truth and sometimes it is messy and ugly.

Doctors in America pay through the nose for medical insurance, because they're afraid of making a mistake and it costing them their entire livelihood and worldly posessions. Maybe the issue isn't judges (though yes, there's shitty ones there too) but that suing for medical negligence over every little thing real or imagined is the problem.

My dad, a thoracic-vascular surgeon (he died a few yuears ago) paid more than $100,000 per year for malpractice insurance :( When I was a small child we were in a line of cars because of an accident. He ran up to the accident and used his pocket knife and a piece of a pen to cut a guy's throat so he could breathe because his mouth was destroyed (tracheotomy?). Later that same guy sued him because he had as scar on his neck.

I agree wholeheartedly. There's a case in the UK with a lower than z-list celebrity that has racked up dozens of arrests for driving violations for everything from speeding to running lights to driving under the influence and she's never been jailed, even after being disqualified from driving she has still been caught driving and received no real punishment. She refuses to learn her lesson to the point where recently she was not only driving whilst disqualified she was also under the influence of alcohol and drugs when she crashed the vehicle and once again given a suspended sentence, it's only a matter of time before she kills and when she does I believe every judge that has let her go should be up on charges because they will have directly contributed to her killing by not doing their jobs properly.

There is a judge in British Columbia that should be removed from the bench. A man driving a truck t-bones a car with 4 people in it, killing 3 of them. He is fully at fault and only gets 4 years in prison. Will be free after doing only 2/3rds of his time if he behaves. What kind of f*****g justice is that. Even the police were in shock.

Not close to the importance of judges rulings or Drs but I feel the same with sports referees. Their calls can lose players a game, cause injury, maybe even a championship. They are NEVER held accountable for their calls, never have to sit through an interview asking them to explain themselves. Everyone else in most professional sports from players/coaches or even owners are always under the scrutiny of the media and fans for bad decisions on or off the field but when the refs blow a massive call… no explanation beyond what was given in the moment. Anyone that enjoys any sport can relate to a massive blown call that was obvious and just a gut punch to people that believe they are trying their best to get it right. They’re not… cause they ultimately don’t give a s**t either way. No deduction in pay, no 3 strikes and your out for a season, nothing… your here until you wanna retire and some of these dudes should have done that decades earlier.

Nnnnnope. We've seen how this works out with cops: ask the police to police themselves and they'll return with "we have investigated ourselves and found we did nothing wrong." There are already rules and oversight in place to punish corruption and get rid of people in the legal system who do their job badly. And one of the big reasons the legal system in the US is so bad is because it's clogged with lawsuits. Adding more AND taking away judges would just double everyone's wait time, which can already be years long.

You can't sue the judge but you can complain to HIS boss....the head judge in any courthouse...and hold your breath until you turn blue.

A fine for blatant BS lawsuits all for the sake of the almighty dollar. And judges should equally check their own emotions at the door (I just saw this happen on a news segment). If politicians check their reason, judgement, and common sense before they set foot in the House or Senate. The same can be said for judges.

And thanks to that, medical malpractice in many ways is one of the larger contributors to the extreme cost of healthcare in the US. Let’s bring that to the legal system!

This is such an ignorant opinion. People simply don't understand what happens in court. They don't understand the sentencing process, they don't understand precedent, they don't understand rule of law. People who opine this are usually not talking about decisions made by courts that are racist or sentences that are unduly oppressive. They are talking about instances where they think someone should be locked up for life. I bet they couldn't care less about a Black person getting jailed on Avant evidence or receiving a much longer sentence for similar offending than a white person receives. This is just sheer ignorance.

There is NO control over lawyers. Lawyers are "judged" by other lawyers. Lawyers are licensed by other lawyers. Lawyers are "punished" by other lawyers. In addition, lawyers propose laws, write the laws, pass the laws and then adjudicate the laws. Less than .07% of the professional class has more than 70% of the power.

Of the population of people having professions or jobs lawyers are 0.0041666666666667 of the total. Those are some of the statistics gleaned from the American Bar Association’s 2020 Profile of the Legal Profession. The150-page report covers statistics and trends in 10 areas: legal deserts, demographics, lawyer pay, legal education, judges, pro bono work, women in the profession, legal technology, lawyer well-being and lawyer discipline.

Judges don't usually hand out verdicts. Juries do. Judges are responsible for sentencing. They can only sentence according to the verdict and within the laws of that state, which can sometimes result in an excessive or inadequate sentence. They do not have free rein to do what they want. They administer the law. They don't make it. Higher courts may have more discretion. Legal advice in the US is already obscenely overpriced. If they have to add malpractice/lawsuit insurance on top of that, only the very rich will be able to afford legal counsel. Suing is not the answer to every single problem.

Unless you have a bench trial, the jury hands down the verdict. The bone to pick with the judge is regarding the light/heavy handed sentences that they hand down.

Over the course of a year, and 5 brain and spinal cord surgeries later and I now have no feeling from my belly button down on the right side of my body, keep being told to sue the doctor for it however where he was operating poses serious risk and honestly it could be worse, yes I cant work or drive and am now fighting to get disability but i could have ended up paralyzed or worse but everyones go to is sue the the doctor sue the doctor I just dont understand sue happy culture especially when something like this is listed as a possible risk as it is there is nothing to sue him for seeing as I was told all the risks beforehand

Omg yes! Please yes! I would have a hell of a f*****g case. It took the gd judge 6 months to realize the woman accusing me of being a bad mommy (very very long story) and had my child.. was a sherrif in said town. I'm talking town. Their are 7 sherrifs and she's f*****g one of them and he played dumb and said.... ooh I didn't know. She worked as a balif for the other judged. In a town of 5k people. Jdjjwjdhdhsjsjdnxbch 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬. Needless to say I have my kid back but still. I hate our b******t court systems.

We have to get rid of the phrase "unskilled labour". A janitor needs practical skills far above average (at least a good one does), and the working conditions of courier drivers or fastfood workers require a great deal of stamina and resilience. In any job you can go from beginner to master, working your job better or faster. Even more important, the economy absolutely depends on the jobs we tend to call "unskilled". Usually, in any company, if a middle manager is absent for some days, work continues more or less as usual. If the cleaning lady is absent, you notice the problems after a day or two the latest.

After that, it’s all about trusting yourself. If you believe that some things are just not right, don’t be shy and share your views with others because, chances are, there are people out there just like you. According to Akbari, there is value in dissent. "There’s often truth at the fringes and insight in unpopular perspectives. Greatness comes neither from blindly following nor from knee-jerk rejecting."

"Many of our greatest historical figures held really, really unpopular opinions. They did stuff that made people cringe or even retaliate against them. Going against the grain takes guts. And that courage is admirable, even if we disagree with what they’re saying or doing—but only when executed with integrity from a place of personal honesty," she wrote.

We switched my kid to a Montessori school because they got to 6th grade and there was no AP option so they were just sitting there bored. It costs a good bit, but I have no reason to think public schools will be better for my kid than they were for me.

I'll probably be downvoted, but this also applies to the African American label. Your distant ancestors were from Africa, you were born in the US therefore you are American. You don't hear people of Asian or African ancestrysaying they are Chinese English or Ghanian Scottish, they are English or Scottish or just plain British.

Jeans and hoodies get washed maybe once a month (or three) unless something has got on them. You don't need to smell like washing powder, and constantly washing everything is bad for you, your clothes, your bank account, and the planet. End of discussion, downvote me all you like I think you know by now I don't give a s**t.

My husband and I have slept in separate rooms for over 10 years (due to his loud snoring keeping me awake). We are very happy together and have no real problems in our relationship - we just both like a decent night sleep. People assume that we aren’t intimate and/or that our whole relationship is falling apart, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

I feel like the human approach to "what to do with the waste/recycling of electric vehicles" will (and probably is) treated similar to the problem of what to do with nuclear waste, and unfortunately, our approach seems to be to sweep it under the rug and let future generations figure it out.
