But if you want to see the whole picture, some knowledge might be as interesting as it is disturbing. However, facts are facts, no matter how uneasy they might make us feel.
So when someone on r/AskReddit asked what is a not fun fact, redditors quickly rolled up their sleeves. The thread went viral, amassing more than 82.4K upvotes and 35.1K comments full of the most strangely fascinating pieces of information.

Bored Panda reached out to Daniel T. Willingham, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia and author, most recently, of Outsmart Your Brain: Why Learning is Hard and How You Can Make It Easy. He was kind enough to share some insights about why humans are so drawn to learning new facts and how we benefit from them.
According to the professor, one reason why we find facts interesting is that they are very context-specific. “For example, if I said ‘Would you like to know how guitars are made?’ you wouldn’t necessarily say ‘Yes!’ immediately. You’d more likely say ’Uh … maybe. Is it interesting?’”
“What’s odd about facts is that the content matters less to whether or not you’d like to learn about it than you’d think,” he explained. Being a psychologist, Willingham is absolutely fascinated by human memory but sometimes it happens that when he goes “to professional meetings and attend talks about human memory that I find boring.”
“And then sometimes, I watch a documentary on something—for example, making guitars—that I didn’t think I’d find interesting in the least and find myself fascinated.”
That your brain erases your nose from your vision, until you actively think about it. You nose is obstructing your vision 100% of the time, but your brain interrupts it as useless information, and removes it. When you start thinking about it, or close one eye, you can see your nose again.
This might seem harmless until you realize the implications.
Your brain, without asking, erases something very real from your awareness. Imagine the possibilities of other things it's doing on it's own like that. There could be a literal 2nd world right in front of us, and it might just be being erased as useless information.
People who survived the Holocaust and get Alzheimer's often think they are back in the camps. So they escape one of humanity's greatest horrors only to die in it 50 years later.
I had the honor of taking care of several people who had been in concentration camps(they had the tattooed numbers) and this is very true. The professor disagrees, saying that factual knowledge is a really important driver of reading comprehension and other high-level thinking skills, like problem-solving.
“Think about how much easier it is to read a passage if you’re familiar with the general topic—I don’t care how ‘skilled’ a reader you are, if (like most Americans) you’re unfamiliar with the game of cricket, you will not be able to make sense of a newspaper account of the game,” Willingham elaborated.
On the other hand, “a ten-year cricket fan in India or other cricket-mad country would have no problem.”

Well it’s a little more complex than that: you try to move any obstruction and use pain meds. Fun fact horses can have choke which means food gets stuck in the trachea, can build up and reach the top of the esophagus and kill them.
I wouldn't call that a "Fun" fact. Fact yes, but there's nothing fun about it.

It's called "choke" and a vet can most probably save the horse's life if they get there in time. It's caused by not producing enough saliva when eating very dry hay or grain.
Yeah choke is a completely different ailment from colic, but can have similar symptoms. Don't feed whole apples... they can get stuck past a horse's teeth and they have no option but swallow (or they can be possessive and bolt food), or they may need their teeth floated as well. Being a knowledgeable and responsible horse owner is best, and there's a ton of ignorance in this whole thread from people who were around a horse once or twice.

Not necessarily. There are many treatments for colic (depending which type of colic it is) and horse owners know what signs to look for that will tell them a horse is sick. First of all we don't let them lie down and keep them walking - then we call a vet. We also keep medication on hand that can help until the vet arrives. The form of colic is then treated appropriately. (Unfortunately for the vet it usually means sticking their entire arm up the horse's ass) In severe cases (where the intestine is blocked or twisted) we will take them to the hospital and surgery can be performed. Most horses will survive this type of event a few times in their lives.
They can be saved if humans realise there's a problem in time, and take action. If there's no help from humans, the horse will almost certainly die.

the fix is to take a small diameter garden hose & gently push it down into the stomach... ranchers have to do this with cattle if the cattle find cane on the property & eat it... the sugars in the cane cause a bloat that will eventually rupture the stomach... it takes a lot of trust & gentleness to convince a big animal you are trying to help by pushing a garden hose down their throat... my granddad was a rancher and had to do this many times... he would not allow cane to grow anywhere on his property. If successful, the gas will come out of the stomach under pressure with a horrific smell... whew!
This depends on the type of colic. Are they impacted? Do they have choke? Or do they have a twisted gut? This is not a 1 size remedy. This sounds like choke if mineral oil was not being given thru a tube.

Don’t feed any animal without talking to the owner first!! All the time there is some animal in Zoo’s or other places,that get really sick or dies because so fool gives them some Junk!!!
Neither can rats, frogs and rabbits. There is medication for horses with gas issues, and that can usually be fixed by having it come out the other end.
They don't go quietly into that dark night. They will groan, get up and down, roll continuously and show immense suffering before they die or get humanely destroyed. I have had a few colic. I was lucky enough to be able to save them.

It's not just gas, this is a massive oversimplification. Typically, it's an impaction (constipation, which can be treated), but they die from a bowel being twisted after bloating or rolling; similar to bloat in a large dog (which is also fatal in dogs). Gas can cause twisting, which stangulates organs in both species of animals. The bowels then begin to die; the pain is horrific. They don't just lay down. Some of these posts are not about colic, but choke also.

Colic. I went to horseback riding camp as a kid and everybody's favorite old horse ate something it shouldn't have and got really sick. We had to call a vet ambulance and needless to say, the 15 some preteens were traumatized. (He survived, thank god.)
It's called colic. They can work thru it by rolling and walking, but rolling can sometimes twist the gut, which is a death sentence without surgery. If you see a horse rolling and not getting up, you have to call a vet immediately to get meds and other interventions.
i volunteer where i ride in summer and some girl i did not know met was about to feed a horse skittles, i quickly stopped that.
Candy is not a big deal... at all.. moldy hay, sand in their feeding area, dehydration, and toxic plants are... as well as poor care, like what you often see at riding camps. Horses love peppermints, skittles wouldn't hurt them. Whole apples can become lodged in their esophagus tho, mimicking colic.
