30 Unique And Informative Maps Shared On This Group That Might Change Your Perspective On Things (New Pics)
While most of us use Google Maps and GPS on a daily basis, it’s pretty rare to find real fans of cartography, the study and practice of making and using maps. If you were ever into geography or history as a kid, the chances are you’re not much of a map person.
But today, we’re going to turn this around. Combining science, aesthetics and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively. And below we collected some of the most unusual, intriguing and informative examples of maps that will put our reality in a whole new realm.
Thanks to this awesome corner of Reddit (whose name we cannot mention thanks to the notorious internet police), there’s a LOT to uncover! Get ready to boost that inner adventurer of yours since we’re about to go places you’ve never even known existed. Psst! More awesome maps can be found in our previous posts here, here and here.

Countries That Have Had Female Heads Of State Or Government In The Last Century
Soong ching-ling was chairwoman of the National People’s Congress in the 1970s, which was considered Head of State under the then constitution (although this role no longer equates to head of state)

She's so concise and says what she means in straightforward, uncomplicated way and doesn't back down from acknowledging where there are flaws or could've done better - but realistically no leader can do absolutely everything that they want, especially in a pandemic, somethings will have to take a back seat. Now, compare that to the bumbling oaf in Downing Street and the difference is so obvious it's almost painful. Never once have Scotland voted as a whole to have the tories in yet we keep getting them. I'm so thankful we have the Scottish parliament to soften the blow and look after people here. I really hope we become independent as soon as we can, we could be so much better without a government that doesn't match what the people here want, in fact who want the opposite
This does not indicate that women are treated more equally in those “pink” countries. India for instance—is one of the worst when it comes to women safety and domestic violence.
But they did have a woman running the country in the 1970s
Load More Replies...We've had a woman prime minister of Canada for four months only. We did have them in many provinces though. Looking foward to it happening again!

Sanna Mirella Marin is Finland's Prime Minister right now, Taking office at age 34, she is the youngest person to hold the office in Finnish history, as well as currently the world's second-youngest state leader, after Giacomo Simoncini, who has been Captain Regent of San Marino since 2021.
She sounds amazing from everything I've heard about her.
Load More Replies...Well, Magdalenas first round as leader of Sweden may only have been six hours, but she is back noe 😀, count us in!
No, because she is the Head of government, not head of state. The head of state is the monarch, so when the king dies or abdicate we will have Victoria as head of state.

Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan is amazing. Best covid response in the world, and she did it while holding off China.
Head of state, that is also a queen. The Netherlands has had quite a few, so the mP is not correct...
Why is the Netherlands not pink? We've had only queens for centuries and happen to have a king now and his daughter will be our new ruler.
Load More Replies...One way or another, this is wrong. If "since the last century" means since 2000, China and India haven't had a female head of government in that time. If it means in the last 100 years, then PNG had a female head of state until 1975.
Ambiguity, damn. "In the last century" can mean 1) over the past 100 years - i.e. since 1920; or 2) between 1900-1999 inclusive, with all the 1900s as the 'last' (prior) century before the 2000s; or 3) only in the 2000s, i.e. "since the last (prior) century ended", but I dislike that flaky interpretation. As for the USA, we usually don't count 'effective'' presidents, like Mrs Wilson when Woody was sick, or Nixon when Ike was sick. We'll exclude Ms Harris too, alas.

No. Prime minister is head of government, the King is head of state.
Load More Replies...Bulgaria had Reneta Indzhova as (interim) prime minister in the 90s.
Netherlands is missing, but we have had 4 female heads of state in the last two centuries. I.e Queen Emma, Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix. Should enough to qualify
Queen Elizabeth II was the head of state of South Africa from 1952 to 1961.
We had the first female prime minister (Sri Lanka - Sirimavo Bandaranayake)
But how many of these are coloured in because they are part of the UK commonwealth, and therefore Queen Elizabeth is their head of state?
The president is the head of state but not the head of the government. Édith Cresson was prime minister in 1991 and 1992.

Uf, Im from Slovakia and we made it at the last moment :D Our current president is woman - first time ever in our short history.
Need to add USA as well since Kamala Harris was POTUS for a couple of hours recently :P
I wonder how many of these nations have unitary heads of state? That is, how many have executive authority in a single person, rather than divided between, for instance, a prime minister and a president. For instance, the United Kingdom (and several other commonwealth nations) had BOTH national leaders be female (monarch AND prime minister), which I think deserves special merit.
I don't think they're counting monarchs with no actual power - In Norway we've not had a reigning Queen, but we've had 2 female prime ministers
Load More Replies...We have a female vp here. In fact, she was President for 89 minutes. Doesn't that count?
No. Unless the king, our head of state, secretly died then.
Load More Replies...yes, for 11 months, there was a woman prime ministress. She's still the only one so far. In France, people elect the president, who names the prime minister. No woman was ever elected as a president in France.
The name of the role is 'prime minister', it is non-gendered, like doctor or teacher
Load More Replies...Oops. They forgot Speaker Pelosi. She is a head of government. Judiciary, Legislative, Executive, three equal divisions.
If I`m not mistaken the president is considered both head of state and head of government.

According to him, there are many different reasons one chooses to make a map. “Sometimes for navigation, sometimes for showing statistical phenomena, and sometimes for fantasy. While artistic skill helps, it is not absolutely necessary. The important thing is to make it easy for users to glean useful information. Most maps should have a thesis or a story it is going to tell and this needs to be told through the map.”

Today, the subreddit of maps is home to 1.7 million devoted members, making it a Reddit powerhouse. But just like any other online community on the platform, changes are inevitable. Patrick told us that the subreddit is doing well, but “Reddit overall over the last few years has shifted towards mobile-friendly content. Reddit used to be only for desktop users. In the early days, the content was mostly large files that were wallpaper-sized. They were great for zooming in and exploring in detail." Those days are now gone.
The moderator also said that nowadays, "Reddit is overwhelmed" with users who only use it on their smartphones and other mobile devices. "For better or worse, that is how it is and that's the trend for the future. The subreddit contains a lot of bite-size Instagram-style statistical maps. The community upvotes this content and if that's what they want, that's the direction the sub will take," Patrick told us some time ago.
