Why is common curtesy so difficult for some people. I'm not a morning person and if I must go to Starbucks, I'm as pleasant as I can be. Usually something like, "I apologize, but may I have a medium Pike please? It's my first cup of the day and I can't people yet."

Oh my favorite is the person having an animated conversation on their phone, on speaker, and not acknowledging that I said "hello, how are you?".
Oh, I saw that sooo many times when I was a grocery cashier! One guy was so focused on his phone call he even left his wallet full of credit cards on the checkout stand. Another one had his teen daughter with him & she was so embarrassed when she had to tell him he needed to pay for their groceries. I told her "no worries" & gave her a smile.

I've been in food-service for almost 25 years now, and I've seen this kind of attitude more than I care to remember. I will never understand it. WHY would a person think that someone else is below them, simply because they work in the service industry?? Seriously? It's just a job, like any other. That service worker could be sitting on their butt at home, they could be out selling drugs, they could be out robbing people. But they're not. They're a productive member of society, working for an honest living. And it's very often stressful, physically, mentally exhausting work, believe it or not. It takes critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to multitask. You have to be able to bend, and lift, and be on your feet for 8-9 hours or more a day. It's hot, it's greasy, there's hot and sharp surfaces all around you, and you have to know a lot of food rules. And you have to learn to grow a dàmn thick skin, because if you don't, dealing with customers like this idiot every day, will literally suck out your soul and eat away at your heart. And that's not even bringing into play some of the evil corporations out there, and how they treat their own employees. It's a lot harder to work in fast-food than some people think. And not just anyone or everyone can do it. It takes a certain kind of person, to be able to work that job, and stick with it. It might not be glamorous, it might not be prestigious, and it might not pay the best. But it IS a real job. We're not there because we're stupid or lazy. We're there to pay our bills and support our families, and also, for the kids, to gain valuable work experience. And we all WORK our àsses off for our money. That aside, we're human beings, just like everyone else. And just like everyone else, we deserve respect, too.
