When it comes to designing things for city living, whether it’s the infrastructure or even little details—like park benches or public washrooms, you expect they will be made with people in mind. But it turns out that’s often far from the case.

Recently, Sahra Sulaiman, the communities editor for Streetsblog L.A., shared an illuminating thread about soap dispensers in LAX bathrooms. “The worker struggling to refill soaps in the LAX bathroom said she just wished architects and designers consulted with the workers that had to maintain the spaces about whether their form would actually be functional,” she wrote in a tweet amassing 126k likes.

Soon it became clear that Sahra is not the only one frustrated by how nonfunctionally public spaces are sometimes designed. More people joined the thread to share their own observations and experiences, so dear designers and architects, please take notes!

Oh yeah this is the winner!!! Seat belts were designed for the male torso, so as a woman (big breasted or not) you've got a 73% bigger chance of dying in a car crash than a man. (credit to the university of Virginia for figuring this one out)

Point of contention: no one should wear shoes with heels taller than 2" (this includes boots). They actually can shorten your Achilles tendon and can cripple you due to tendon/muscle atrophy to the point you can't wear flat shoes.

The 'pedals for heels' and 'headrests for peeps with hair' probably don't exist for reasons of safety. The final approval for designs most likely rests in the hands of industry regulators, and not the actual architect.

It would most likely force my neck down and chin towards my sternum in an accident. The opposite of whiplash. This is a fact of life for most people below 5'10" or so driving any vehicle and customisation to deal with the issue voids warranties.

The headrest is not for use while driving. It's for when you are parked, and it protects you from whiplash in an accident. It's not safe to use the headrest when driving. You need to be able to turn your head freely to see all around you. You can't do that if your head is pressed back against the headrest.

You are assuming the designer made those decisions. As a person with a degree in Architecture I often selected everything in a facility such as in this example, only to find the contractors would replace the item specified with a less costly item. Also they would not install them as specified because something else in the bathroom had also been replaced and these two items were not size compatible in a small apace. Get all the facts before you throw the Architect or Designer under the bus. Also, Owners have been known to get involved to " save money" and screwed it all up. Consider ceilings: lighting HVAC supply and return grills, fire protection alarms and sprinklers, sound system speakers, emergency lighting, specialty equipment, access to area above the ceiling, signage and potentially many other things all need to occupy the same space. One person in the design is responsible for coordinating all that with the many design disciplines involved. One well meaning person can cause a me

Not to mention the fact that car safety is literally not designed with women/children/people with smaller bodies in mind. I'm more likely to die in a crash than my boyfriend is just because my body is different and the Reagan administration didn't believe in regulating anything.

The headrest isnt so much a thing to rest your head on. Its functionality is to prevent your head snapping backwards when rear ended and so trying to save you from whiplash. The "headrest" must also be set to the correct hight to work properly. I would choose m my health over my hair. And regarding to driving with heals, it's proven to be more dangerous or less save then driving with flats. Maybe want to get yourself some nice car flats. And change shoes in the car. Drive save and looking good.

There are car headrests with holes in the middle that are perfect for hair buns and pony tails, you just have never bothered to look for one. Also you should never wear heels when driving, it is dangerous, they can stick beneath the pedal and cause you to crash. It is a known cause of death in some accidents.

Sleeping in a car or a recliner has become nearly impossible for most people these days. Have you ever noticed that the proper way to do CPR is to lift the patient's neck and tilt the head back to open the airway? So why do the designers of these two items do the exact opposite? Are they trying to cut off our air, hoping we'll die in our sleep and make the population control freaks happy?

A car company, many years ago, had a test for their seat covers that required a person wearing a mink coat to sit on it. The fabric opened and when the person left the car, the seat cover pulled loads of hairs from the mink coat. I guess they redesigned that quite quickly.

That's because auto design world is dominated by software savvy guys and marketers, not female designers with common sense.

And for nails that actually extend beyond the finger. Not even the extreme kind. Just simple normal nails. I'm always turning things on on the steering column, including the fake automatic shift buttons. Throwing the car suddenly into 2nd or 3rd. At any speed. Including on the highway. And I was never taught how to drive a stick, so this is very dangerous.

There was a so much wrong with this. Lipstick holders are bad but heels are good???? Safety is less important than a ponytail? How about imagining a world where women don't compromise to look pretty. For themselves, of course, not for others. Whiplash is fine if it saves the hair. And heels and driving? I mean, really???

They didn't say they want NO headrest. And if you're soooo concerned about safety wouldn't a lipstick holder be a distraction 🤔 You're going off the deep end here

Commenter Talena Lee wrote the following, and I think she's right: "she's mistaking an accessory she probably saw like once online that she could buy somewhere and attach to her airvent for a literal feature built in to cars everywhere and posting like she knows s**t. people do that on the internet."

you know that's not a thing right? they make accessories you can buy to hold chapstick but not literally cars designed for women with lipstick holders. so scream away darling. lmao. also I literally have all the hair and you're talking about a car without head rests which wouldn't be safe. and not all women wear heels. that's not a car designed for women. that's just a car designed for one specific kind of shoe which is stupid. how is this the suggestion in first place. it's the dumbest thing I've read in days.

Maybe remove the headrests and wear a neck brace instead? Headrests are there for safety, not to rest your head on.

... design should always, primarily at least, be a result of function. Pinin Farina designed the Testarossa? Yes, and while it's drag coefficient might be surprisingly high for a car of that kind and era (0.36 - same as the contemporary S-class by Mercedes, the W126), the other side of it is that its body creates a lot of downforce without needing a wing or so ... those upswinging, horizontal areas over the air inlet are what is to look at - and, man, was that a nice car! After all, that much power, the speed it could reach (roughly 300 kph), do need downforce, and this, if created by aerodynamics, won't come for free, taking into account that a car's usual shape always will produce upforce, and this car does not, but creates a downforce of significant amount, shines a different light on the sheer, uncommented number of 0.36. The Mercedes had upforce anyway.

Take an upvote to get you back to neutral; just because the audience only understands one word in four (me included), you shouldn’t be penalized. This said, unless you live in Germany with access to the autobahn (which itself should be discussed elsewhere), I fail to comprehend why any car destined to be driven by people off a racetrack should be designed for such high speeds. Speed limits aren’t about automotive capability, they address average human response time and the physical damage inherent at specific speeds.

I am Interior Decorator myself, and I would like to see Car design to the practicalilty. Push botton that make sense to all ages. Not cars that has so many push botton, that you don't even use it. I am more so on easy to plug gadgets, compartment that will do job to the max, for coffee, cellphone and Sunglasses.

Urban design is concerned with the arrangement, appearance and function of our suburbs, towns and cities. It is both a process and an outcome of creating localities in which people live, engage with each other, and engage with the physical place around them in the modern world.

According to the United Nations (U.N.), 68% of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050, compared with 2% at the beginning of the 19th century, 30% in 1950 and 55% in 2018. The current urbanization is represented in hard-to-believe figures. The world’s largest city, Tokyo, which had a population of roughly 37 million in 2020, is expected to be overtaken in 2028 by New Delhi, the capital of India.

But you don’t have to look at metropolises to realize how much and how fast our environment is changing. Pick just about any city, the one that you live in right now, and it will seem both familiar and new at the same time. So today designers and urban planners face incredible challenges—to make sure the public spaces, infrastructure, and resources cater to the people who live there.

Those are indeed the worst, and seem to be popular with "sleek" contemporary designs. A huge sink with the spout reaching 1" past the edge so you have to press your hands against the side of the basin to access the water.

There are many ways to approach urban development that promote healthy living and longevity through a variety of design practices. Areas called “Blue Zones” are one of them. Dan Buettner, the author of the concept who wrote about for National Geographic, found that these communities had lower incidents of cancer and heart disease, fewer cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, a higher percentage of the population in their 90s and 100s, and were generally happier.

In general things are designed with the worst way for handicap people. Urban architects and engineers should live a month in a wheelchair or with a stroller before they do things. For example the metro at my parents city is """adapted""" for us, they put a beautiful sticker and cheered of how amazing they are. The metros are taller than the platforms and it leaves a small step. Small enough that a walking person wont notice but bit enough that my disabilities scotter cannot get there...

According to Joe Pobiner, Planning and Urban Design expert and advisor, urban design that follows the concept of Blue Zones includes: walkable environments to reduce the need for cars; increased vertical density and mixed-use diversity to encourage walking; a mix of housing options to encourage a multi-generational population; a mix of development types beyond residential and office spaces; local gathering places, parks, and plazas; locally owned farm-to-table restaurants; community gardens and rooftop gardens, and so on.

Yeah, we got a new delivery ramp years back, so we do not need to use the public entrance anymore. Turns out we use the public entrance since them anyways, because the ramp is highly unsafe and horrible to work with. The architect is still mad at us, he think, it was a great idea.

Pobiner argues that today, walkability and access to green spaces are top selling points. “Buyers want neighborhoods that offer new architecture, land uses, and technology—areas that create 'intelligent' density conducive to walking and biking, and that are less costly and more sustainable,” he explains.

Yeah, place where I used to work had floor to ceiling glass walls on conference rooms. Then they had to add curtains because you know, sometimes you might be sharing something you can't announce to the whole company. Also it is a distraction when you are in a meeting in a glass cube and you see people outside the cube passing by.

At a school I taught in they put the drains in the center but sloped the floors UPWARDS towards the drains. So nothing would run in the drain unless the entire room was flooded with 1.5 inches of liquid. Our poor janitor was always fighting with the bathrooms and especially the ones for the little kids with bad aim. He'd have to hose the floor down and then sweep the pissy water towards the drains for a half hour to attempt to clean things.

The art department at my college was connected to the architecture building, and they were the ugliest buildings on campus. The bathrooms were small and dark, the lighting was horrible throughout, the elevator would frequently stop a few inches above the floor and was slow as hell, which meant that more often than not, you were hauling projects and art supplies up a narrow flight of stairs. 😑

Also dishwashers! It's bad enough having to bend down to load one (really, can't the top be higher than the bench without causing armageddon?) but when you have to twist as well to reach the place where dirty dishes are stored before going in then that's just beyond irritating. Also, if I can't walk past it when the door is open I am not happy.
