While nowhere near as dramatic as my take of a classic short horror story, a surprising number of people have had unknown cats mosey into their homes.
The ‘My House, Not My Cat’ Facebook group is the perfect place for people to share fun and funny photos of unfamiliar felines claiming dominion over their property. The community has grown 30k members since being founded in October 2016. But enough talk—time for some cat pics. That’s why you came here, isn’t it, dear Pandas? Founder Stevie was over the moon with joy that the "My House, Not My Cat" group reached over 30k members. According to her, the last time Bored Panda published an article about the page, there were around 20k members. A 50 percent increase is nothing to laugh at—it's wonderful news.
Stevie said that every time that she logs into Facebook (that's around once an hour), there are always one or two posts waiting for her to moderate. "With 7 admins and mods that’s quite a lot," she said. Since Bored Panda’s last article about the Facebook group in July, the number of moderators and administrators has increased from 3 to 7 as the community has grown.
The founder also revealed to Bored Panda that the community has become more close-knit during the lockdown. "People love the group. There’s no way we could get rid of it. It’s amazing how many people get cat visitors."

Stanley Update! To Recap, Stanley Was A Stray Who Would Visit The House To Be Fed. He Sometimes Would Appear On The Windowsill Or The Balcony.
Last week we found him in front of the house, something terrible had happened to him so we brought him to the vet. The vet had to remove his eye. He's been recuperating in our spare room since. Yesterday I brought him back to the vet to have his stitches removed, get him neutered and updated on vaccines, deworming etc. The vet said he's healing up really well and that he's put on weight! He's wearing a shirt because he kept licking the anti tick and flea meds on his nape (he doesn't seem to mind at all, he's walking around like he wears shirts everyday).
We have decided to keep him, he'll never be allowed outside again. He's such a sweet cat, he loooves belly rubs and doesn't bite. Next step is to introduce him to our sassy tortie girl.
Please tell him how hambsome he looks

I adopted one kitty from my parking lot and another from the shelter. They lived exclusively inside my apartment except for excursions onto the balcony from time to time. They never killed a bird, a mouse or a baby rabbit. They were never bitten by a rabid fox or raccoon or sprayed by a skunk. They never got into a territory fight with another cat. They were never chased by free-roaming dogs. They were never run over by a car or had kids throw rocks at them. They liked to watch the world out of the window but but they and I were glad they were safe indoors.
Then you were simply lucky nothing ever got in. we had a mouse--upstairs--last night. Past tense; we have 5 cats.

Blacksheep, how ignorant are you? Feral cats have an awful life starving on the streets and freezing in the winter. It's well known that most don't live past 2/3 years. I have taken in several stray cats over the years and they have never wanted to go back outside! Catherine, please don't compare them to children. I have both and they're not the same! House cats allowed to roam kill millions of songbirds a year unless they're wearing a bell on their collar. Plus they may be killed by a car. Pet owners need to be responsible and think about what danger their pet may cause or may get into. Yes, just as we do with our kids.

It's good people adopt strays like this and protect him from things like this happening again. ALL cat owners should learn from this. KEEP YOUR CAT INSIDE so they won't get run over, attacked by dogs or horrible people. They won't get poisoned or taken by hawks. This poor baby could be anyone's cat. Anyone who lets their cat run loose outside that is.
Ignore the ignorant people criticising you for making him an inside cat. He's a living example of the dangers of being outside for goodness' sake. And I'm amazed he's only a week post op. Your vet did a fantastic job and he clearly has strong healing powers! Stanley is indeed very dashing.

I volunteer at an animal shelter (no kill). One of the major reasons outdoor cats die is due to fighting with other cats, wounds and infections. Thank you for taking in this sweet boy <3

I just absolutely LOVVVVVE to read about rescued pets with disabilitys getting forever homes. I wish to someday have a cat that is missing an eye from a shelter because they would probably like to have me as their owner because I would give them lots of catnip and treats. lol

Stevie shared some of the group's plans for 2021, too. She said that they'll keep "moving along" like they have been. But before we ring in the New Year, she says there's something pleasant waiting for all the members of the group: "We have a surprise for Christmas—a 'gift' from the admins and a special thread just for the members. We just hope more people get mystery cats!"
Finally, the founder said that all posts either meet the criteria set out on the group page or they don't. There's rarely a gray area. "If they don’t, it’s usually because of rule 5 (has to be your experience, your house and not your cat) or rule 2 (no viral content, fundraising, etc.)."

He showed up one spring hoping to mate with my two girl cats. But my girls are fixed and are permanently not in “the mood”. After breaking into my house, eating all the cat food and spraying, I looked into taking him to the Cats Home. They said he would most likely be put down as they felt he might not be easily adopted. So I decided to keep him. I buttered him up with food until I could pet him and booked him in with the vet to be neutered and microchiped. His name is Oskar and he’s been with us for 6 years.
Stevie previously told Bored Panda that she founded the group after seeing meme after meme about cats in other people’s homes popping up all over the net. She thought they were brilliant. After a bit of research, she saw that nobody had created a group for cats that let themselves in through open windows and doggie doors, so she took charge and made one.
What’s more, Stevie recently posted that the number of submissions has increased to the point that they’ll have to be much more selective on what gets featured. So we can expect even higher-quality posts in the future.
Earlier, Stevie said that a lot of people have the misconception that strange cats won’t ever wander into their homes. But then life surprises them and there you go—they’ve got a feline to take a photo of and post to the ‘My House, Not My Cat’ Facebook page.

This Baby Kitty Was Not Our Cat
She followed my daughter home from the neighborhood store, walked right in the house and snuggled up. She pretended to be sweet, loving and cuddly. After one week of searching for her owner, we figured we would keep her. She must have used her spidey sense because she went from being a loving sweet kitty to a holy terror of a devil cat. She brings in at least one dead bird a day, body slams our other cats, smacks the dog, and will eat anything and everything you might leave on the counter. She has even jumped into the oven and we found her inside the refrigerator once. She wasn't our cat, but she made sure she ended up being our cat.

Close To Midnight Five Years Ago, I Was Startled By The Pathetic Mewling Of An Unhappy Kitty
My husband and I went all over our house, opening cabinet and closet doors in an attempt to free whichever kitty of ours had managed to trap his or herself. According to the vet, kitty was malnourished and suffering from ringworm on her ears. She was so young that she still had her milk teeth. In order to treat the ringworm, we had to massage an ointment all over her ears AND let it set for 15 minutes before washing it off. All without her messing with it. This is when I learned she was so freaking tiny that I could plop her entire body into a Crown Royal bag, gently draw the string just over her shoulders, treat her ears, and keep her safe, snug, and still until it was time to wash off the goo and let her free. Five years, and a lot of love later, her fur grew back and she fluffed up, though she's still rather diminutive for a full grown cat. Today, Not My Cat is now my beloved MoonShine.

This is Tiger. He lives nearby me. He has humans, but they don’t take great care of him. He was attacked by an animal and developed an abscess on his head which I treated a few months ago, and he began spending more and more time bouncing between my porch and my neighbors’. Finally, I bit the bullet and got him combo tested to make sure he was safe to allow around my two cats— negative for everything. So...maybe he’s part-time my cat.

Olive is my neighbors cat who has a raspy smokers meow. He was like 2,5 inches away from my hand!!!! AND DIDN'T RUN AWAY! HE JUST LOOKED AT IT AND CONTINUED EXPLORING! ALSO!! HE WAS PLAYING WITH ARTEMIS!!! They were running around and playing, so cute!!! I placed another blanket on the couch for him to be extra cozy and warm at night I'm sooooo happy right now!!!!

I hate to break it to the "not my cat" crowd, but...Y'all have a cat now. There is a neighbor's cat who basically owns my whole building and everyone in it. He's down in the office, he's been in my apartment, he's awesome.
In Sweden, if you feed a cat that doesn't have an owner, it automatically becomes your responsibility. So the idea that you can feed ferals yet claim they're not your cats seem kind of odd to me. Also, feeding cats you know belong to someone else, like a neighbour, feels odd to me as you basically risk luring them away from their real owners.
This exactly. Cats are oppositionistic creatures and making them get lots of food easily is more harmful than beneficial as they get overweight.
Load More Replies... Please, DO NOT feed random cats that show up at your house. They might have special food at home, or might just love to eat a lot. Not your cat - don't feed it. Unless it is very very clear it is a stray. (and even then: is it a stray or a lost cat?) Here in the Netherlands there are hardly stray cats, so any unknown cat is a cat from someone else. As I mentioned earlier in this thread: our cat has been missing several days for several weeks, I expected him to be with our older - kind of lonely- neighbour, which I was fine with as she didn't feed him. But he was 3 streets away and being fed unhealthy food. And ofcourse he goes back there now. Hopefully when they stop feeding him he'll stay here again.
I once had one and a half cat... A few houses down the road lived a dysfunctional family. Government (Dutch version of CPS) took the young kids out of the house. Then the parents kicked the cat out of the house. The cat then half of the time lived with my direct neighbours, an the other half of the time he lived in my house, and became good friends with my own cat. Effectively he was a stray cat, and he was very bold and cheeky and always begging for food. I called him 'Swiebertje' after a Dutch TV-series of the '70s about a funny vagabond/tramp who was also bold and cheeky and always had funny conflicts with the local police commissioner, and always was 'begging' for food at the mayor's cook.
Don't feed other people's cats, mine disappeared for 2 days once, we were frantic because the last time that happened he'd been run over. We posted flyers everywhere, posted them through neighbours doors in a 0.5km radius. Within half an hour he wandered in like nothing had happened. Clearly someone had been feeding him (we know he goes in other people's houses because he's skittish around food so clearly he's been chased away before). If it ain't yours don't feed it, you don't know what medical needs it has. If you're worried about it take it to a vet or animal shelter to check for a chip.
I will repeat... If you have a cat with special dietary needs, including being on a diet... Don't let your cat roam outside!!!!! I know there are people who think their cat MUST be outside or it will implode, but you can't have it both ways. Either protect your animal from strangers and food and cars and coyotes, or expect them to eat, get pets, get run over, and get eaten. It's really not that hard. (I'm glad yours came back, but to let them outside to wander after going missing really doesn't make sense to me. But you do you!)

Every day of my life. Open door. Cat or dog appears. "Who're you?" I ask, and then spend half a day tracking down an owner or similar... *sigh*
You should not feed or deliberately let in a cat that might be someone elses. You can put a flea collar or some collar on them if they dont have one with a note with the date, homeless?
One of my cats likes to chill in the neighbours house through their catflap. A few weeks ago apparently he was getting up for work and got the fright of his life when he found her curled up in his underwear drawer.

you can buy a door flap that only opens outward so your cat can still get out... then you regulate who comes in... stop feeding them, & they will all go away... I had a male gold kitten about 10 weeks old show up in the back yard. I found him in the bushes. He was terrified & climbed up the fence to escape, watching me for an attack. I told him that I would not hurt him. He understood, because two days later he came into the house. He stayed about 3 months & then left on his own. My older cat did not mind sharing the house & food with him. And the new guy instinctively knew how to use the box. Nice guy.
Just buy a microchip cat flap, they cope with multiple cats.

Keep feeding them. Sit close to them (but not to close) while they eat if you don't already. Wet food is best to get them to approach while you are there. Patience, patience, and more patience. It just took me 4 months of sitting very still every single evening to get my ferals to trust me enough to reach out and get in a pet or two. The reward is worth the wait. Good luck!

Cats have a lot to teach us about this deeply flawed concept of possession that we have. Cats do not consider themselves 'owned'. They know that they should be free to go where they want. It's us who have got things drastically wrong by thinking that we have the right to own animals and make them live where we want them to. Thanks, cats, you're way above us.

I got my two cats by coming home and finding a cat. And a child looking kinda smug and kinda guilty. How to say no to that? So now, I have two cats.
I have 2 NMCs. Both belong to different neighbors. One is Tommy, a sweet ginger. If I don't pick him up, he'll climb me for cuddles. He likes tummy rubs but he'll grab my hand and chew on a finger - not hard, it's like "omg, i love you, num num num!" Then there's Quincy. That booger comes by just to tease my dog lol He'll sit outside the window and meow until she sees him. Then he beds down to watch the chaos he's created, like "you can't get me, nyah nyah pbbbbt!"
When I was a little girl we found a tiny black kitten up a tree. We took her around the neighbourhood but nobody claimed her. My mum and dad didn't really want to keep her, but she kept hanging around and Mum kept putting food out for her "for the time being", and in a few weeks she was our cat. We named her Isobel and my sister and I loved her to bits. I wish this story had a happy ending, but one day Isobel disappeared never to be seen again, and we never found out what happened to her. :(
My sister and I had a "not my cat" situation in our old apartment. There was a cat that would lay on our porch all day long. We would leave in the morning and he would be there, we would come home and he would still be there. We were not feeding him by the way. I wanted to, but we could have gotten evicted.
Why aren’t we addressing the real issue of KEEPING CATS INSIDE AT ALL TIMES! Cats are domesticated so they don’t need to be outside. It is dangerous for them. An outdoor cat lives an average of 4years whilst an indoor cat can life upwards to 20years. The elements outside create a hostile lifestyle for them. Everyone should spay/neuter their cats (and dogs) . These animals do better that way as well.
Most cats here were raised with going outside. I feel it's animal cruelty to deprive a cat of it's freedom of movement, of his natural habitat to hunt and play under the clear blue sky. To climb trees, step in snow. (I don't like caged birds, rabbits, or other animals either.) Yes, outside might be dangerous but if the cat wants to be outside and enjoys it, I rather want him to live 10 years in freedom then 20 years in captivity. Again, your cultural situation regarding cats is probably a lot different from here. Let a cat be a cat. Don't make it into a living stuffed animal for your own enjoyment. It is a living creature that deserves freedom. And yes, we will probably never agree on this - I know this can become a heated debate. Also, we had a cat who was afraid to go outside, so he didn't, and that was fine but it was his own choice.

I hate to break it to the "not my cat" crowd, but...Y'all have a cat now. There is a neighbor's cat who basically owns my whole building and everyone in it. He's down in the office, he's been in my apartment, he's awesome.
In Sweden, if you feed a cat that doesn't have an owner, it automatically becomes your responsibility. So the idea that you can feed ferals yet claim they're not your cats seem kind of odd to me. Also, feeding cats you know belong to someone else, like a neighbour, feels odd to me as you basically risk luring them away from their real owners.
This exactly. Cats are oppositionistic creatures and making them get lots of food easily is more harmful than beneficial as they get overweight.
Load More Replies... Please, DO NOT feed random cats that show up at your house. They might have special food at home, or might just love to eat a lot. Not your cat - don't feed it. Unless it is very very clear it is a stray. (and even then: is it a stray or a lost cat?) Here in the Netherlands there are hardly stray cats, so any unknown cat is a cat from someone else. As I mentioned earlier in this thread: our cat has been missing several days for several weeks, I expected him to be with our older - kind of lonely- neighbour, which I was fine with as she didn't feed him. But he was 3 streets away and being fed unhealthy food. And ofcourse he goes back there now. Hopefully when they stop feeding him he'll stay here again.
I once had one and a half cat... A few houses down the road lived a dysfunctional family. Government (Dutch version of CPS) took the young kids out of the house. Then the parents kicked the cat out of the house. The cat then half of the time lived with my direct neighbours, an the other half of the time he lived in my house, and became good friends with my own cat. Effectively he was a stray cat, and he was very bold and cheeky and always begging for food. I called him 'Swiebertje' after a Dutch TV-series of the '70s about a funny vagabond/tramp who was also bold and cheeky and always had funny conflicts with the local police commissioner, and always was 'begging' for food at the mayor's cook.
Don't feed other people's cats, mine disappeared for 2 days once, we were frantic because the last time that happened he'd been run over. We posted flyers everywhere, posted them through neighbours doors in a 0.5km radius. Within half an hour he wandered in like nothing had happened. Clearly someone had been feeding him (we know he goes in other people's houses because he's skittish around food so clearly he's been chased away before). If it ain't yours don't feed it, you don't know what medical needs it has. If you're worried about it take it to a vet or animal shelter to check for a chip.
I will repeat... If you have a cat with special dietary needs, including being on a diet... Don't let your cat roam outside!!!!! I know there are people who think their cat MUST be outside or it will implode, but you can't have it both ways. Either protect your animal from strangers and food and cars and coyotes, or expect them to eat, get pets, get run over, and get eaten. It's really not that hard. (I'm glad yours came back, but to let them outside to wander after going missing really doesn't make sense to me. But you do you!)

Every day of my life. Open door. Cat or dog appears. "Who're you?" I ask, and then spend half a day tracking down an owner or similar... *sigh*
You should not feed or deliberately let in a cat that might be someone elses. You can put a flea collar or some collar on them if they dont have one with a note with the date, homeless?
One of my cats likes to chill in the neighbours house through their catflap. A few weeks ago apparently he was getting up for work and got the fright of his life when he found her curled up in his underwear drawer.
Do we want to know how said cat got *into* the underwear drawer?
Load More Replies... you can buy a door flap that only opens outward so your cat can still get out... then you regulate who comes in... stop feeding them, & they will all go away... I had a male gold kitten about 10 weeks old show up in the back yard. I found him in the bushes. He was terrified & climbed up the fence to escape, watching me for an attack. I told him that I would not hurt him. He understood, because two days later he came into the house. He stayed about 3 months & then left on his own. My older cat did not mind sharing the house & food with him. And the new guy instinctively knew how to use the box. Nice guy.
Just buy a microchip cat flap, they cope with multiple cats.

Keep feeding them. Sit close to them (but not to close) while they eat if you don't already. Wet food is best to get them to approach while you are there. Patience, patience, and more patience. It just took me 4 months of sitting very still every single evening to get my ferals to trust me enough to reach out and get in a pet or two. The reward is worth the wait. Good luck!
