50 Posts From People Fed Up With Unrealistic Requirements And Expectations When Trying To Find A Job
There’s only so much BS a human being can possibly take. And this level of tolerance decreases as soon as we start talking about job applications. From one hell of a job description to position requirements that make zero sense, these are just the tip of the iceberg of the dangerous and severe diagnosis known as chronic job search exhaustion.
If you have it, you know it—because at this point you are no longer willing to send one more cover letter with dear this and dear that, because enough is enough. But there’s a safe space to talk about hard things and this corner of the internet known as the r/RecruitingHell subreddit is precisely that.
With 154k members no longer buying into broken job offers, the subreddit has quite a hell of a collection to make you feel better about where you’re at, or at least, not worse.

This Happens All The Time
Anyone Relate To This?
YES! The only reason they don't include it is because they want to try and pay you as little as they can get away with.
Job searching is one heck of a job to have. And while you’re on duty, there are many things that induce the dread of any job seeker—job search fatigue. From never-ending cover letter requests to test tasks, pre-screen interviews, draining face-to-face interviews, trial first day, and you name it, only to find out another candidate has been chosen, it's something that puts a strain on your wellbeing in a way that not many things have.
The worst part of the job search is that until you find one, you are not allowed to quit. The problem is that if you succumb to job search fatigue, you’ll prolong the whole process and the search will become no less easier, but way longer. So you wonder what can be done about it?
Hiring Managers And Recruiters
Oh but be a mom, and have the ability to take off a year or two to get a whole new human started with bonding, love, security, self esteem, etc. then try and go back to work. Tell the new potential employer what you've been doing during your "gap" I swear, it's like they'd rather hear that you robbed a convenience store and just got out!! "What, you picked your CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT over your career??? "
Throw out the algorithms and metrics and once again have HUMANS read applications. Don’t give me the excuse that you don’t have enough personnel to read them all. F*****g HIRE some!!!
But who’s going to review the application for that job if they don’t have the personnel for it?
Load More Replies...If someone clearly shows signs of expertise, a few gaps on a paper shouldn't matter.
In my country nobody asks the reason you have employment gaps. They usually assume it's for personal reasons, or having trouble finding a job in your field.
Sometimes people also leave jobs off their resumes because they’re irrelevant or basically bad memories, so it looks like a gap but it isn’t.
Load More Replies...We don't. We value family and care about health. Just be able to explain the gap without sounding shady and it's all fine.
What amazes me is that employers are willing to use algorithms to determine your suitability as a candidate but rarely use dating agencies to find themselves a suitable partner
In Germany, it is becoming normal to just add 'Care work' into a resumee. It is a job, after all. But long illnesses are still a stigma :-/
During The Great Recession (U.S. 2007-2009), when a great deal of Americans were unemployed due to no fault of their own, an employment agency went public with the fact that most companies were refusing to consider applicants who weren't currently employed. It was shocking and disgusting.
You can't expect companies to stop using algorithms. I find most management types see them as labor savers and aren't smart enough to know when their algorithms are being used poorly or even destructively. Just look at how many managers rely solely on reports to make all of their business decisions, and usually only focus on one number no matter how complex the decision or situation. And any office employee who has to generate these knows how easily they can be manipulated to show whatever you want them to show.
I lied once and said I was travelling for a year, they never bothered to do any checks, I was just having a bad year.
Times change, things change, we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, rules and certain policies needs to accommodate our new way of life now
It’s even worse if you’re a guy who has an employment gap for raising a child. Hiring managers (all women) got super judgy and condescending after learning that.
In their defense a lot of these people are getting hundreds of applications every day. They can't manually evaluate all of them.
You'd be amazed at how many people neglect to explain why the gap exists. THIS is what is irritating to hiring managers - not necessarily the existence of the gap itself.
I work for a global company at a senior development position and have had to hire I would say 100's of people over the last 18 years. I don't assume a gap is bad but in my experience it almost always turns out to be bad. Most people even if they were gone for legit reasons can't handle the hours or stress from a position and tell me so. I understand why some people in hiring positions assume it's a bad mark and my recommendation is to always put the gap on your resume in an obvious position and to explain it in the resume. You should see a better turn on your resume.
Ok. See I have a gap in my vocational history because life, and I got hired and it 'didn't turn out to be bad for them' at all. As to why I got hired? Cuz I omitted the gap (filled it in with my voluntary work I did so it wasn't obvious) because of people like you. I assure you being out of work didn't mean I couldn't handle the stress or whatever. Everyone is different. I would wager half the people in your employ probably have work gaips and you don't even know because of the stigma against it.
Load More Replies...I don’t even read your resume that carefully. I just want to talk and see if you’re a fûcking idiot or not. And even then, an idiot can do a lot of jobs. I just want to see if you’re presentable and not a bîtch.
A Little Too Accurate
This Guy Gets It
“It produces this feeling of ‘what’s the point’ and ‘I don’t want to put myself out there’ and obviously that’s a problem,” said Dawn Norris, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. But the bigger problem is that if “you’re not seeking, you’re not going to find anything.”
But according to Norris, job search fatigue is much more complex than simply “an exhaustion of rejection and not hearing back.” It turns out, it has also to do with the loss of identity. “For those of us whose identities were connected to our jobs, those rejections and not hearing back creates a mismatch. We’re constantly getting these feedback mismatches between who we believe ourselves to be and what we’re hearing. When we hear that, it increases our job search fatigue.”

We Need To Make Discussing Salary Normal
It is normal to discuss salaries. I am an employer, had some interviews as I hired three people (small office). While I liked their enthusiasm and their willingness to work with me, I always told them the net salary at the interview. It isn't fair to find out your salary only after working for a month there.
Opinion
Then, there’s a stigma about job seekers as they tend to self-isolate and put up a smile every time talking to people about how their life is going. But it’s really important to talk to others to get that much-needed social support and reassurance that you’re going to be just fine. Also, people may help you to learn new job search strategies, give a fresh perspective on your skills and experience, provide useful tips, and after all… help you to find a job.

Unfortunately…
According to my annual evaluations, I am the most efficient employee in my team (my manager wants to promote me). I am severely underpaid, not only for the work I provide but also compared to my colleagues. I asked for a raise and they denied, saying that I should be happy I have a job at this day and age, so I decided to underwork so it matches my salary. I'm still and by far the most efficient employee T.T

#80 I used to be one of the "loyal" to a company type, NO LONGER - The corporations do not give a flip about you, many a person has worked for 30+ years at a company, to be fired right before retirement and pension. Or firing all the "older" employee's to re-hire at much lower wages.
In an interview, the boss said he wanted me to violate a federal law on his say so. The interview was over. HR rep in the room was sympathetic. Other IT people astonished. I ain't freaking lying to you so I can take a job that requires the CEO to back me up.
Some of these are so unbelievable that it makes me think some people out there are just fulfills unemployment requirements.
You are applying for a job so you can have an experience but then they require you to have an experience? Seriously, wtf?
I applied for a job that asked "are you a dog or a cat person & what is your favourite brunch spot." I can't morph into any animal, but if I could, it would be a bear shark, and I've never eaten "brunch." I may have eaten a late breakfast or an early lunch, but I'm not a pretentious hipster, so it's still called breakfast or lunch.
They weren't asking what kind of animal you would become, they were asking if you preferred dogs or cats. If you prefer dogs, that means you would be considered loyal, obedient, & a follower; if you like cats more, then you are an independent thinker & might not "obey" all their rules. The brunch thing tho seems idiotic.
