When we’re kids, we all feel the same—little courageous adventurers ready to soak in the world with open arms. Children have no prejudice about the world, and no sense of disparity that only emerges later in life.

When looking back at your childhood years, mixed emotions may come up. For some it’s nostalgia of carefree days, for others it’s things that they didn’t notice back then that struck a chord. Like, eating chili beans for days in a row or taking it as a usual thing not to expect anything fancy for Christmas.

In fact, these are among the tweets that people shared when Twitter user Trevor Donovan asked people “Tell me you grew up poor, without telling me you grew up poor.” The thread is an eye-opening read about growing up impoverished as told by the little details that often stay unnoticed from an outsider's eye.

People Are Revealing How They Grew Up Poor Without Actually Saying It (40 Pics) Didn’t have enough food because mother spent our money on church. Paid tuition to parochial school. Put cash in 2 collection plates & an envelope for The Bishops Fund special collection on Sundays. Paid coins to light candles. Her piety kept her kids hungry & cold

I'm not religious but you don't need to hate religion itself, instead hate organised religion. In saying that though, your mother neglected your basic needs and doesn't deserve the mother title.

We pass a multi-million dollar church facility that takes up an entire city block every week. I can't help but think how many homeless or hungry that money could help. I keep hearing "Not all religions" (so to speak) but the ones that look to be out for profit only sure ruin it for any who aren't.

When I was still churched, we had to vote on the church staff's salaries. They always were making more than the vast number of people in the congregation - with free housing - and many job expense write-offs. Used to piss me off because if someone voted "no" by ballot there was this admonishing that "you aren't supporting the Lord's work."

Yeah, this is why I have a problem with churches. Not religion...Not with the faith people have and such, but the organizations. Charity begins at home. You can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself. I don't think it's so much the religion that's bad, it how it gets twisted through peoples interpretations of it.

A kid my cousin went to school with was part of a certain religion than meant his parents gave some ridiculous percentage of their income too. His school bag said Safeway on the side and was noticeably of the plastic variety. I hate religion too. (edited to add - if it won't get censored or whatever, and if you're really curious, the religion was known (at the time) as Jehovah's Witnesses. And it was a church mandate how much money they were to "donate", as well as knocking on my cousin's door practically every week to try to get them to join - didn't matter that my cousin was CoE as that religion "didn't count")

I used to do loan modifications for a bank, and I was trying to help this woman. Of course we have to review there bank statements, and financial stuff. This lady made pretty good money, but she was tithing so much! She had 3 payday loans. I told her you need to quit giving your church so much and pay these things off, she refused. I said I can't take this to my manager with you giving close to 40% of your pay to your church. I said your church will understand pay these loans off and then you can start giving again. She refused. I couldn't help her.

Tith is 1/10th and isnt a damnation thing. Especially if you cant afford it. Its purpose is more for people like Bezos so like a pond, water goes in, and comes out and the pond doesn't become scummy and stagnant. Aka you learn what it is to be generous and giving. But you dont deprive your family doing it, that is even worse than not giving

Churches are organized religion. Faith and spirituality is one thing but giving all you have to some church your attending is 1) STUPID as F! 2) Self serving (thinking the more you give the better placement in "heaven" your going to get rather than taking care of your kids and your life). Shame on this woman and anyone that thinks this is OK! My Grandma and Grandpa Shores were retired and always gave 15% of their SS checks to the church. Barely making it month to month! I mentioned that to her once when I was kid and she shut me down. So you know... it's like trying to tell someone that their political beliefs are wrong, same with religious nut jobs out there, talk to the wall you will at least get it off your chest. Humans are weird!

At my church it is not uncommon for the Bishop to help with food and other things to help members pay tithing. Usually the need for help is only temporary. If there is an underlying cause of poor financial skills those are addressed also.

Hmmm......nothin wrong with having faith.....or spiritual beliefs....no matter what culture or part of the world you are from....and there are some good preachers, priest, bishops, elders....whatever they are called in a personal held belief system. The problem is.....all organized religion is a man made thing. It's not God made, or Jesus made, or, any specific higher power made; it's completely man made, and man is imperfect. Given-yes, there are some good congregations and religious leaders: all that means, is that, that church just happens to have some, or a lot, of real, good genuine people. It's the whole idea and concept of organizing a system of beliefs, and adding rules, fear, intimidation, and the illusion of power to determine your fate-which no man or religion can do, no matter what they tell you, or who they claim they speak of. And it's all the same, for those who believe; because we all have in common the belief there is a higher power over us.

While I will agree that it really honestly DEPENDS on the individual church how they use/spend their donations and if they are doing honorable things with it or wasting it, I CANNOT say anything good about religions that have RAMPANT pedophilia and cover-ups throughout their system and are using that money to further instigate, cover up and defend the sick bastards that hurt children. People ain't making their kids go hungry for the sake of their book clubs. While some may be able to experience religion without making others suffer financially or emotionally (eg. conversion, superiority-complex, bigotry towards other groups, shame, etc.), this story is so common, we cannot deny that religion is at fault.

Tithing is not just about money. The Bible tells us to take care of our family first. You are struggling financially to take care of your children. Talk to God about your means of tithe. You can "tithe" of your time, help a friend, visit someone old or sick, look around you and God will show you many ways that your can "give back" and "plant seeds" until He supplies you with finances to take care of your family AND give 10% of your earnings to tithing. God Bless You All.

Nope, never. I was a "fat child"- but when I look to the old photos from that time, it wasn't that bad, as they considered it. My mother refused to give me food to school(because "nobody gets fat if they don't eat"), which meant I was too hungry when I got home, so I ate whatever I could find. So it worked the opposite way. She was so "afraid" about me getting fat that she lied about me, that I have diabetes (I don't and never did), so nobody can give me anything sweet.

And you can dress a dough-roller in dress for dolls (made by my grandmother) and pretend it is a doll. I brought it to preschool. We weren't that poor, but my great-grandmother came from really poor family and told me about how she dressed a roller as a doll. In my eyes in those days- everybody had at least one doll, but nobody had a dressed roller. I thought it was something special. And my parents were called to the preschool and asked, if everything is ok at home, if we cannot afford a doll.. it is funny today, but wasn't funny for my parents that day 🙂

Two colleague from Poland was in London for training for a week. Company would pay for the food if you get receipt. Course-leader only said there's only 1 vending machine. So they never had lunch they just had some free biscuts from hotel. Day 3 I found a food truck and you'll get a receipt.

Fridays was soup Mom made from little bits left over during the week. It was pretty random. It emptied the frig, Sat was grocery day. She knew the price of everything in the store.

My mother was a faithful S&H Green Stamp saver! I remember her stamp books, and how happy she’d be when the6 were finally full.

I want to refer to a deleted comment about how personal hygiene is not a difficult thing. For someone who does not know anything about poverty, it may be difficult to understand that it can in fact easilt become a difficult thing. Dental care for example can be expensive, and the fear of needing an intervention can keep people from making an appointment, leading only to more problems and more fear of the costs. People in poverty do not always have access to the necessary information that seems so obvious to those in a better situation. This lack of access (or even knowing you can access this information) can lead to all sorts of missed opportunities. Good hygiene is not always an easy thing to have, and that's a sad truth.

I still get the cheaper knock-offs when they taste good. Some of these even taste better then the product they're based on. Not al that is more expensive is automatically better or tastier.

I will always admire my great-grandmother (that survived 2 world wars and a long period, when there was not enough of almost everything). She was scrappy, resourceful as nobody I ever knew. She made soup from carrot, beetroot and potato peels. She made spinach from early grass and nettles. She made "schnitzels" from elderflowers...and thats how we found I am alergic to them. Almost died, if she didn't ran to the nearest house with phone (not everybody had phone at home) and called for an ambulance. She was over 90yrs old that time, but ran for my life. Still miss her.
