My school Kids and I...with the help of other teachers and students... are running a shop for people in need. We are also welcoming refugees from the Ukraine now. We open once or twice a week. Around 50 customers every time. We give away a ton (1000kg) of food every time. Also clothing, toys and more. There still is one or two difficult customer every time, I gotta say that. Even though it's all free. No questions asked. But it's the other 99% that stay in mind. And that is a good thing. There's always that one person....just focus on the others.

This complaining person aside, there is an interesting issue here. I have worked in community health for many years and something that is very observable is the cycle of poverty and poor health, much related to healthy lifestyles and diet. While this cycle has many contributing factors, the issue of access to healthy, nutritious food and nutrition knowledge is massive. Frequently when food or food vouchers are provided, it’s for food loaded with additives and sugar and sodium etc. Obviously, there are logistical issues with storage/transportation etc with fresh fruit and vegetables and meat that doesn’t exist with canned goods and other things with long shelf life. However, it must be frustrating for a family in poverty having their only option being canned chilli with never a vegetable in sight, especially where it perpetuates the cycle of poor health. I know canned chilli is better than nothing - I do know this. But wouldn’t it be great if there was a third option?

im not sure what the food standards are in America for organic and "non toxic" food (Apologies just guessing) but in Australia you have to guarantee that no pesticides have been used within 5km of the produce. So its pretty hard to meet that standard. I would dearly love the commenter to say how she aims to achieve this standard so she can sustainably meet the needs of the food bank while producing "non toxic food". I am disgusted at this lady. People that struggle don't care about organic or anything. I would do anything just to make sure my child has another meal. As long as he gets to eat. It's tough out here too. I was just denied food stamps because I make too much money. But after paying a sitter, mortgage, and other bills, I'm left with about $280 for a month. I need to get gas with that too. I was told by the social worker that if I quit my job I'd qualify for everything. I'm a single mom. I work full time. It was supposed to be 2 weeks worth of lunches, and cost the taxpayer £30 each. There was less than £5 of usually poor quality food, the surplus being pocketed by the private company our corrupt Tory govt appointed to do this. It would have been cheaper and way more effective to give struggling people the money direct. No, this wasn't a rejected act of kindness and charity, it was a scam.

Don't give your physical address until they are actually on the way. If at all possible, meet them at a nearby gas station or fast food place.
Or a police station! Many police departments in the U.S. have offered to be meeting places for this purpose, and some even have designated parking spots just for this purpose with camera coverage. And yes, I would definitely block the CB after the first nasty reply.

I explain it nicely and apologised profusely for wasting her time. 10 min later she messaged me back saying that if I could wait a few days her husband would have their pickup truck back from the garage and would deliver and they'd help me put it together!
Here is my complaint. You spend $1,000's on training and college to be in the IT field, just to have your parents always asking for tech support, without so much as a thank you! But, borrow $5 from them and they will NEVER forget it!

Reminds me of a time my wife and I were out and about. Guy comes up to us saying he is starving and has no money. One of us offers to give him £5 for a sandwich and a drink from a cafe over the road. He tells us he is banned from there so we offer to go in and get it for him. He declines saying he wants money for a KFC instead. We decline, tell him that if he was so desperate for food he would not be so picky and walk off. Heard him badger someone else for money as we walked away.
There was an animal/environmental charity sending out free activity packs to try and engage more children a while ago. It was just a little pack with a guide to spotting wildlife, a picture to colour in, tips to be more environmentally conscious etc. Several parents were complaining they hadn’t received their packs within x days, their children were upset and they needed the pack to entertain them during school holidays blah blah blah. It’s FREE, you’ve not even paid a penny towards it. It annoyed me so much that I had to comment even though I’m nothing to do with the charity. I hate that kind of attitude with a passion.
I wish I had screenshots of my experience. I once posted on NextDoor that I had some free clay pigeons (for skeet shooting) up for grabs. I included a picture of the box and a count (there were 18 or 20) in my post. A woman said she wanted them, I told her I'd put them on my front porch for her to pick up. She later messaged me to scream at me about how much I had wasted her time for so few clay pigeons, and how she had to pay her assistant to drive across town to pick them up. Sorry my free stuff was such a burden on you!

I am an amateur baker who spent alot of my time playing with fondant that I'm capable of making a really decent cake. I made a cake for someone's kids birthday that was ninja turtles themed and they thought that I didn't deserve more than $40 for it. I did the math for ingredients and time and I should've charged absolute minimum, friend price, of $150. I'm not a professional, and not to toot my own horn but I have a bit of skill and this guy was so annoyed paying $40 which was mostly for ingredients since my hourly rate would've been like $1.50 at most. Since then, I won't make a cake for anyone who isn't very close family or friend and only if i offer. The $40 just barely covered ingredients and materials and the cake was huge and I spent 2.5 days on it. Never again have I made a cake for someone because people think they are deserving of below cost cakes. And I have some severe medical issues that should render me incapable of making an extravagant cake.
I know this is long winded but it was just so infuriating. I made really amazing cupcakes for a friend's kids fundraiser and they not only covered ingredients but when I told them I didn't need more than cost they went ahead and made me the most phenomenal pierogies outside of Poland that one can imagine as well as kielbasa. Still bothers to this day this guy thought my work was only worth $20 when it weighed like 10 lbs and I even had made a custom box to carry the cake that looked like a custom pizza box specifically for their kid.

Lol. A flight attendant once spilled water on my pant leg by accident, and I was all Oh, it's fine, it's only water and my shoes are fine. It would be so difficult for me if I ever encountered these types of people. I'd either try to accommodate if they seemed nice enough on a bad day or verbally explode in an attempt to make their future generations feel ashamed of both our behaviors.

Reminds me of a time my wife and I were out and about. Guy comes up to us saying he is starving and has no money. One of us offers to give him £5 for a sandwich and a drink from a cafe over the road. He tells us he is banned from there so we offer to go in and get it for him. He declines saying he wants money for a KFC instead. We decline, tell him that if he was so desperate for food he would not be so picky and walk off. Heard him badger someone else for money as we walked away.
There was an animal/environmental charity sending out free activity packs to try and engage more children a while ago. It was just a little pack with a guide to spotting wildlife, a picture to colour in, tips to be more environmentally conscious etc. Several parents were complaining they hadn’t received their packs within x days, their children were upset and they needed the pack to entertain them during school holidays blah blah blah. It’s FREE, you’ve not even paid a penny towards it. It annoyed me so much that I had to comment even though I’m nothing to do with the charity. I hate that kind of attitude with a passion.
I wish I had screenshots of my experience. I once posted on NextDoor that I had some free clay pigeons (for skeet shooting) up for grabs. I included a picture of the box and a count (there were 18 or 20) in my post. A woman said she wanted them, I told her I'd put them on my front porch for her to pick up. She later messaged me to scream at me about how much I had wasted her time for so few clay pigeons, and how she had to pay her assistant to drive across town to pick them up. Sorry my free stuff was such a burden on you!
Since you posted the number of clay pigeons, she can't blame you for her lack of numeracy skills.

When I check out the group, and I'm asking for more information, I would never dream of behaving the same way. They are giving you stuff that you want/need free. I am an amateur baker who spent alot of my time playing with fondant that I'm capable of making a really decent cake. I made a cake for someone's kids birthday that was ninja turtles themed and they thought that I didn't deserve more than $40 for it. I did the math for ingredients and time and I should've charged absolute minimum, friend price, of $150. I'm not a professional, and not to toot my own horn but I have a bit of skill and this guy was so annoyed paying $40 which was mostly for ingredients since my hourly rate would've been like $1.50 at most. Since then, I won't make a cake for anyone who isn't very close family or friend and only if i offer. The $40 just barely covered ingredients and materials and the cake was huge and I spent 2.5 days on it. Never again have I made a cake for someone because people think they are deserving of below cost cakes. And I have some severe medical issues that should render me incapable of making an extravagant cake.
I know this is long winded but it was just so infuriating. I made really amazing cupcakes for a friend's kids fundraiser and they not only covered ingredients but when I told them I didn't need more than cost they went ahead and made me the most phenomenal pierogies outside of Poland that one can imagine as well as kielbasa. Still bothers to this day this guy thought my work was only worth $20 when it weighed like 10 lbs and I even had made a custom box to carry the cake that looked like a custom pizza box specifically for their kid.
Load More Replies... Lol. A flight attendant once spilled water on my pant leg by accident, and I was all Oh, it's fine, it's only water and my shoes are fine. It would be so difficult for me if I ever encountered these types of people. I'd either try to accommodate if they seemed nice enough on a bad day or verbally explode in an attempt to make their future generations feel ashamed of both our behaviors.
that's the result of the doubling down strategy, intentionally taught from pre-school to government - make them deliver, then pay repairs, then insurance, then moral damage etc. It goes also in the opposite sense - you want me to PAY for your help? aren't you entitled? or, what the poor want, freebies?
Honestly, none of these people actually know how it is to have nothing, like really nothing. I know it is not very nice for me to think that, but it would teach them a lesson to be in this situation, learn how it is to actually have nothing.
