Most police are familiar with how to handle guard dogs – but what about a guard parrot. Brazilian police were faced with this question during a drug raid in Vila Irmã Dulce, a low-income community in the capital of Piauí state, when their cover was almost blown by a parrot shouting: “Mum, the police!”
Despite the warning cries, law enforcement busted the crack den run by a local couple and detained in the parrot in the process. One of the officers of the raid said, “He must have been trained for this. As soon as the police got close he started shouting.”

The unnamed, feathered accomplice was found perched inside of a small, windowless brick one-story home, according to a report from Brazil’s R7. The unsuccessful warning resulted in the arrest of his owners, a man, and a teenage girl.
The Brazilian station also aired footage of police cataloging small bags of crack, while the parrot sat obediently watching on the countertop.
Despite their best efforts police could not get the parrot to speak in custody. A Brazilian journalist who med the bird in custody confirmed this by saying the creature was “obedient,” but, “So far it hasn’t made a sound … completely silent.”
The officer that “arrested” the papagaio do tráfico — or “trafficking parrot,” as it has been referred to in outlets, by carrying it out of the house on his fingertips and placing him in a cage to be transported to the Teresina Police Department.
GloboNews, one of Brazil’s main cable news outlets, reported on Wednesday that the parrot was to be transferred to a local zoo, wherein which zookeepers would teach it to fly before being released. Even though this “canary” won’t sing, it hasn’t stopped police from trying, “Lots of police officers have come by,” said local vet Alexandre Clark, “and he’s said nothing.”
