Person Has Their Parents Watch Their Cat During Their First Year Of College, Parents Secretly Give It Away
When Reddit user nexerxe left home to start their first year of college, they couldn’t take their beloved cat, Spotty, with them. So, nexerxe left the critter with their parents. Or at least that’s what the student thought. Nexerxe eventually found out that their parents actually gave away the kitty. Without even telling them.
So, crushed but not defeated, nexerxe made it their mission to find their pet and get it back. And with the help of the Internet, they did. Nexerxe set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise the funds needed to re-adopt the kitten, and 10 people chipped in $240, allowing the broke college kid to be reunited with their four-legged buddy.
And Spotty isn’t just a cat. The kitty is nexerxe’s friend. When their father was emotionally abusive, their mother refused to let them get help. “The only thing I had was my cat,” nexerxe said. “I moved out when I was 18 to get away from the abuse, and accepted that I would have to fully support myself in a town where I knew no one and had no job.”
Now, nexerxe works two jobs and is about to start one of them full-time but still can’t imagine their life without Spotty. “I’ll do anything for my kitty.”
Here’s what people said about the whole ordeal

Yup. Of course, they'll whine and complain about it to anyone who'll listen.

They certainly are. Vets call then 'naughty torties'. My tortoiseshell cat is 20yo now, bit senile, but still that special mix of loving & fierce. So glad she got her cat back, hope they have many long happy years together.

People should have to be trained and tested before breeding. This is the type of parent(s) that make damaged people. I’m glad this person got their cat back and is aware that their parents are messed up.
I know a pediatrician......he wants to sterilized 75% of human population.

That's your reasonable side and it should be supported.
Load More Replies...I am so happy you got Spotty back. She is such a beautiful cat. She has Amazing eyes. She was more of a support to you than your cruel parents were. Make sure you make some good friends in college. Especially ones who love animals. They can be your new family. After all friends are God's compensation for a bad family. And for goodness sake DO NOT let your parents into your life again. You have been through enough. Especially don't let them any where near future grandchildren. They would probably sell them to the circus. Please give Spotty a big hug from me and a gentle scratch behind the ears.

I'm so glad you have your kitty again. Pets are so special because they give unconditional love and acceptance. It sounds like you need that in your life because your parents don't seem to be able to give that to you. Please take care of yourself and remember you control your own destiny. You have determination and bravery and that will take you on many wonderful adventures.

This is a difficult one. There are many people who grew up in dysfunctional families who create dysfunctional families of their own. Who is to blame? Should we not make Mental Health Services much easier to access and destigmatize them at the same time? How come society as a whole is so keen to stay out of the way of what happens to children at home and at the same time often uses such heavyhanded blunt approaches to "help" children that it involves more trauma, be it of a different kind? There are, obviously, as many variations on this as there are countries and cultures, and I am no more than a bystander. Any thoughts on this?
We should make it so much easier for children who are at risk to be able to open up, to tell people what they are going through. I know it can put children in danger if they tell someone so that needs eradicating. Get them out of there first & foremost. There are going to be times where children point fingers at blameless parents but they surely would be the minority & the main thing is to protect those who are at risk. No second guessing the child - believe them! Get them out. Then investigate and be bloody sure before putting a child anywhere near their family again. I heard an expert say once that all people who abuse, were abused but not all abused people go on to abuse. Need to make sure that those who would go on & abuse learn what a family should be like. If they can't maybe they can't have children - I get fed up with people thinking children are 'a right' when, no, they are a gift! So if that's what's needed to ensure a child's safety so be it!

So glad that you have your Spotty back and that Spotty has her you back! <3 (I could give some advice, as it sounds like your father and my mother were 'cut from the same cloth,' but you're getting some sound, solid advice there.)
My god you are a good person taking such care to get your cat back. My family would be death to me. But keep the door open a tiny inch. Relatives are important. But please please if you meet somebody make sure they are nog like your parents. Find yourself a good life you kind hearted human.
Some relatives are absolutely NOT important. Some are so toxic the door needs to be slammed shut and locked permanantly. They did things to deliberately hurt her - there are no excuses. Needs to make a new family and leave the old one far, far behind her.
Load More Replies...What. The. Hell. That is just messed up! I'm most disappointed in the mom. I don't care if you're married to god's gift to women (which this a*****e clearly isn't), your children ALWAYS come first. Always. It is the first, and most important, Sacred Rule of Motherhood. It's the unspoken oath we take when we choose to bring another life into this world, or at least it should be. 😤
I'm glad to hear you got your kitty back. Your folks can just disappear may sound harsh they sound really crappy. Work hard in school get help if you need it(because of parents)just take care of you . Children should be loved and protected not abused .
Keep the cat. Ditch the parents. They are toxic and no one needs poison in their lives even if it's coming from relatives. Build yourself a new family; it's bound to be better than the one you were born into. I had to separate myself from my brother and sister and just thinking about it makes me feel relaxed.
Remember this when your mother and father get old and start needing diaper changing and help. Never come back. These idiots never change unless they start getting old. I'm so glad you found your kitty. Some people shouldn't have the right to have kids.
I saw this when it was first posted about a week ago and it broke my heart, so glad they are reunited. Some people really are just cruel pieces of s**t, even worse it was her own mother.
I'm very glad this had a happy ending. I hope "nexerexe" avoids future contact with his/her parents.
If you have kids in the future then do NOT let them babysit. "I'm sorry, honey, I didn't realize you wanted your kid back. I left them at the mall."
You are so incredibly lucky to have found her. Congrats on that. On your parents: This is such a major case of throwing away any trust in them ... never talk to these shitheads again. If they need a kidney transplant, agree ... wait ... and, in the very last moment, decide to keep them both, and let them go to hell (which they likely won't ... hell is a silly idea...). This is just so bad, a bad intention, and them knowing you're too far away to do anything about it is just low. Your parents suck. F**k them. Seriously, I have no nicer words to that kind of human c**p. If you meet tham accidentally ... and can't resist punching them in their dumb faces ... well, if I lived close enough, I'd offer an alibi for everything that serves you and the cat and hurts them. They never again should be worth your trust, neither your time or your anything. Never. This has crossed a border you can't cross without consequences.
Honey, I've been there. You learned early and that's a good thing. Saved yourself years of pain. You and that beautiful cat form a family. A perfect family. You don't need the psychopaths you used to live with. Like I said, I've been there. Life gets better, believe me.
I hope that this person abandons them when they grow old and need them the most. I wish it with all my heart!
I completely understand. My ex kept threatening my cats and I was so anxious leaving them with him when I was at work. I'm so glad she's back.
I would never speak to them again. But my parents would also never do that
That is lower than low. The parents deserve the picture I have of a dog with the caption, " There's only one dangerous breed-humans.
I had to move back in with my parents when I separated from my first husband. They refused to let me bring my two cats because they already had two cats and I had no choice; I had to take them to a shelter. It broke my heart to give them up. Two weeks later my parents got another cat. I was so furious.
I'm so happy for you that you found her. I'd bet a good sum that one, or both of your parents are sociopaths. I'm not joking. Sociopaths are more common than many people realize. Don't feel bad if you ever feel the need to break all ties with them. They'll never be good people, they can't be good people. They're just wired differently. In fact, I would recommend getting far away from them. If you don't, mark my words, someday you'll be sorry you didn't.
I haven't seen anyone mention this - the OP's father is like ya narcissist, and the mother is codependent. There is a subreddit called "children of narcissists" or something like that. It's full of stories like this. Pretty awful. It took me a while to realize how amazing my parents were, but I know now how lucky I am.
It's a common, combination. My parents were the same. They feed off of each other, or rather one enables the other. Mother was co-dependent and my father was a narcissist. It left me emotionally starved.
Load More Replies...My parents gave my dog away while I was at summer camp when I was 13.
People like this should be forcibly sterilized. They do not deserve to have kids - biologically or adopted/fostered - ever. I'm so glad she was able to find her kitty and get her back. I really didn't think she would ever find her and am beyond happy to have been proven wrong. May her parents rot in Hell soon and may she and Spotty live long, happy and prosperous lives together.
When parents love each other more than they love their offspring, it's sickening. "The Willoughbys" much. They can love each other but loved their children too. Giving away the only thing that makes your child smile is just as hurtful as giving them marks from your belt. Abuse is abuse, no matter what form it is.
So glad that you got your cat back! How nasty and hurtful of your parents.
I'm so relieved they got their cat back! Luckily, my family understands the importance of pets. They're not animals, they're members of the family.
Nice happy ending, only those who love their pets, would understand, all my pets, meant the world to me, still do today, my two fur babies, I worry that I must outlive them, unfortunately, there is no body to take them, not love them as I do !!!
I hope you disown your parents and cease all contact with them forever. They are toxic, and they will continue to try to ruin your life if you maintain contact with them. It was evil to give your cat away, but then to compound the evil by refusing to tell you where she was just made it all the worse. I grew up in a dysfunctional family and my father threatened to kill our pets. If he had, I know I would have killed him. Anyone that tortures his kids by threatening their pets is a terrorist, and deserves to go to the nastiest part of Hell when he dies.
What kind of person would do this?! This is the equivalent of abandoning your child. If you abandon your child or hurt them, you shouldn't deserve to be a parent. If I knew my child was not safe and that I couldn't take care of them, I would make sure that they were somewhere they were safe and happy. I hate when parents say they'll love a child forever and do this. They don't even deserve to have a child, I can't believe it. Actually, I can because some (most) humans are trash. I'm absolutely relieved that they reunited with their cat because some people don't get to. If one of my dogs ever got lost, I would probably be depressed for years. I really take my dogs for granted but at the end of the day, I realize that they are my best friends. One of my dogs is getting old and has been acting up lately but I can't see him because he's with my dad and grandparents. I really hope his clock lasts a little longer and I can see him soon.
This is terrible. I can't believe someone would do that, it's the equivalent of abandoning your kid. Honestly, anyone who would abandon their kid or hurt them doesn't deserve to be a parent. Why have a kid if you don't even care. If I knew I couldn't take care of a kid, I would try to find my kid a better and safer home. Then again, humans are idiots. It's am absolute relief that they got their cat back because if I lost one of my dogs, I would probably be depressed for years. I really take them for granted but at the end of the day, I realize that they are my family :)
When I was about to leave for college, I was going to have a friend take care of my horse , as my friend was still in high school. My mother put the horse in the newspaper for sale without my knowledge, and for a price that was way too cheap. When I went to see the horse after he was slide, he was the only horse there that wasn’t skin and bones. None had water and my horse brought the empty bucket to me to refill, which I did. I reported the woman to the animal welfare but they said they weren’t too bad. A few MK tha later her husband got charged with massive cocaine trafficking and they sold the horses to pay for the lawyers. I tracked the horse down to the next seller but he “flipped” all six of the horses he had bought from her and didn’t keep track of where the horses went. I never found him! This was well before the internet so it was tough to even try. A friend of mine saw him at a horse show and said he was ridden by a young girl. So I have to hope that he had a good life.
I know it's already been said but if my parents acted in the same manner they would be dead to me
When our oldest daughter was away at university, her cat got cancer. We had multiple surgeries done to remove the cancer but it kept coming back and the vet said there was nothing we could do. (It was not treatable with chemo.) Her cat died when she was in the middle of finals and waited until after finals to tell her. I felt HORRIBLE about her cat dying!! I can't imagine any parent that would be so s****y as to just give the cat away!!! SMH...
That cat looks like it was worth everything the OP did to get it back. You can tell the kitty is best friend material. Any cat deserves love and compassion but that cat looks like it belongs with its friend. I’m glad they are back together and I hope the parents are miserable about it.
I know I am going get "blame the victim" hate. But she should have known, that if they treated her badly, they weren't going to care about a cat. Glad she got it back though.
She was a teenager at the time. She was probably still hoping they'd be the parents she wished for.
Load More Replies...Terrible and heartbreaking that so-called parents would do this. Unfortunately, millions of children over the years have had their parents tell them "Brownie" went to live on a beautiful farm when they got rid of the family dog. This isn't an isolated occurrence. No less tragic, but very common.
there not parents there those distant relatives you don't know or have yet to have earned the right to be called or considered family by you.
I never understood anyone who would let their partner abuse children. Both parties are Unforgivable!
Never underestimate the love o,some has for their pet, because it isn't ever, just a pet! WAY to go!
I'm sorry for the distress both of them had to go through. My parents cared for my cat when I went to study overseas and they gave him to another family with my blessing. Cat always liked kids better than adults and the family friends had a young kid in elementary school. That little bastard, RIP, was very happy with his new family
Dang, glad you're reunited with your kitty now! It's awful that your parents did that. Kitty is more of your family than they are!
I'm sorry that happened we had to give our cat back because she had stomach cancer. My other cat is a male black cat named Dexter. I've had him since I was 1 and if anyone EVER gave him away I would track Dex down and kill the person who gave him away!
You shouldn't even refer to them as 'parents.' If they were never there for you, and did shi* like this, then obviously it's more like living with strangers.
My moms alcoholic boyfriend violently threw my 2 cats out of the house while I was gone for the weekend. He hated all the family of moms and in the end was greatly using her for money on alcohol. (Both were over 50) When I came back and didn’t find the cats anywhere he came up with the story that the cats had escaped trough a windows upstairs. I knew this was bs because the cats were scared of everyone but me and never went upstairs. Even if I was home and they heard someone they scurried under the bed downstairs where my room was. Also the fact that the cats were afraid to come back in confirmed that he had done something. Both were inside cats their whole lives and were scared to be outside. I hated his guts for doing that because when I moved I couldn’t take them with me, one was lost and most probably killed by wild animals and the other only came Only at the end of his life he confessed on throwing the cats out and my mom told me this when I went to visit her after his death.
I need more details like where was the cat how did you find where it was give more detail damnit!
I'm so sorry. Your parents are horrible people. So glad you got her back.
I was married briefly to a man with a family like this. His Mom wasn't horrible, she just didn't have a strong character. His grandmother was a NASTY piece of work, and my ex and his brother unfortunately never became functioning adults. I hope this young lady can get past all this s**t and build a beautiful life despite it all.
You have HORRIBLE parents. Thank God you are nothing like them. May you and kitty live and prosper!
I'm so glad that you were able to get your beloved kitty back! I would never be able to forgive my parents if they did something like that to me!!
I hardly have the words for the contempt I feel for any parent who 'gives away' a child's possession, be it cat, TV, or whatever. Just what do you think you are teaching that child about parenting?
I had a similar experience with my cat and best friend but unfortunately could not get my kitty back so happy you were reunited with yours!
I was abandoned at birth, went into foster care, almost died in foster care, and was adopted by horrible people. When I was 12, I asked my "mother" to make my "father" stop touching me. She got mad at me and told me to just let him have his fun. Some people aren't meant to be parents and some children apparently aren't meant to have the love of a parent. All you can do is decide to be a better person than either of them. It sucks and I'm so sorry you went through that horrible betrayal. I've been much happier and healthier after kicking them out of my life.
I feel that is quite an extreme thing to say. Yes they are not the greatest parents but should not be shot. Calm down real quick

F**k that bible s**t, this is just cruel, no forgiveness for giving away someone's beloved pet, if i left any of my dogs or cats with my family and they gave them away, i wouldn't ever talk to that person again, they would be lucky to not get worse than that.
Load More Replies...looks just like my sister's cat back in the day. Fitssse could have been its name. I'm not sure why it was left with mom, possibly school or because it exceeded the cat limit on her apartment. Anyway the cat and my mom kept out of each others' way most of the time as all the upholstered furniture became more and more shredded. Dad avoided it and when another sibling of its owner tried to pet it, it clawed the heck out of them. When mom let it out once I overheard her tell it to go play in the street. I thought that so funny of my normally sweet mom. One day mom and the cat passed on the open basement stairs. Cat reached for her leg and clawed her up causing a fall and stitches. Cat moved on to another sister's home and we learned to feed but not touch. I think its original sister got it back at some point and it lived in a cage stacked on other caged cats. That sister "rescued " feral cats. Anyway, the resemblance is extraordinary.
Teenagers don't always make the best decisions because, well, they're young. The parents shouldn't have allowed her to get the cat if they had no intention of keeping her when their child went to college.

Load More Replies...Good job, parents. I'd have done the same thing. -Dr M, deathly allergic to cats
just because you're allergic to cats doesn't mean you have to outright hate them
Load More Replies...Some parents are victims themselves..some don't deserve the title parent... for the first, forgive them because they don't know what they do.
