Raising kids is hard, there is no question about it. It's easy to get stressed and frustrated - which can lead to some toxic parenting styles. Here are some toxic parenting behaviors to avoid. Instead of taking at your kids talk with them. Barbara Greenberg, PhD, a clinical psychologist known for her national television appearances focusing on the mental health of adolescents and teens, told Reader's Digest: “Toxic parents are known for not listening to their kids, but instead, talking over them or at them,” and said they should, "make a concerted effort to remain silent and listen, listen, and listen some more. If kids feel listened to they will talk more and confide more.

No statue, no matter what it represents, is for a child to climb on! Unless it's made of plastic, in a primary color and in an actual playground...

Actually, in D.C. on Constitution Ave NW almost directly across the Mall from this, there is a larger-than-life statue of Albert Einstein that children (and adults) can climb on. As it is metal, so that is not recommended on hot days. So much for "no statue, no matter what it represents...". I understand people's disapproval, but I think real disrespect is an intentional act. A fact of reality is that kids have been clambering on statures probably as far back as they have been built... and will continue to do so. Kids climb all kinds of things because it something kids will try to do.

Because some parents have this mind set that just because they have kids, they have a right to be anywhere and do what they want. But then if you try to shame them, they use the excuse of "They're just kids! How DARE you question my parenting!!"

During the elaborate funeral procession for a local man killed in Iraq I was filming for my husband who had to work. All you can hear is the little girl next to me laughing and yelling about the parade. The mom was too busy on her cell phone to notice the dirty looks she was getting from everyone around her.

I don't blame the kids, but their parents are missing an important teaching moment. There is a huge statue of a seated Albert Einstein just across the street that invites both children and adults to sit in his lap. It's far more appropriate and joyful than climbing on the body of a fallen United States soldier.

This one is so upsetting it makes me kind of nauseous. A) art is NOT a jungle gym. B) that's not just regular art it's a tribute to people who went through some serious s**t in the name of our county. Apparently whoever is in charge of those kids doesn't care about that at all though. Those poor guys... going to see things meant to honor them and there they are climbing on it and where are their parents/ whoever is watching them?????

Yes I agree, the number of people here who spread sanctimonious, judgmental opinions about disrespect and patriotism is shameful. It stems from the glorification of unnecessary deaths as sacrifice and the worship of patriotism as above all other human feeling. Instead of love for your country, love your fellow man especially your children.

It’s a wonderful statue, and a wonderful statue to climb. Those little girls are loving it and if someone were kind enough to explain to them what the statue means they would love it more and never forget its meaning. Unless the children are vandalising the statue, it is not a sign of disrespect. The women represented saved the lives of other women’s sons. These are not women who would prevent children from actively exploring and challenging themselves. These women accepted challenges not out of blind patriotism but knowing that thousands of young Americans, thousands of Vietnamese were caught in a struggle not of their own making. I suspect that any veteran of the world wars or Vietnam would be entranced by the sight of children playing happily on the statue rather than playing in bomb craters or unable to play at all. Public statues are by law in most jurisdictions required to be designed to be safe for children to climb.

The statue is heartbreaking. It is about tragic loss fighting for ones country. It is not a laughing and fun playground item. Teach kids about the meaning and show the veteran visiting the statue some respect for his sacrifice.

Young kids can also hurt themselves climbing on the statue and falling from it. When other adults are there paying their respects, especially veterans, they should not have to watch it being played on like children's playground equipment! It is wrong!

It's hard to keep a cool head when you have a million things to do, the dog got out, you have to drop people off at activities and still have work. Dr. Bernstein believes that it is worth it to learn how to manage these parenthood frustrations as the outcome can have a positive effect on your child's behavior. “When you learn to identify and manage your own parenting frustrations, you’ll be amazed at how your child’s challenging behaviors can quickly improve.”

Your child is not their behavior. We all have bad days, imagine if you snapped at your child and from every day onward your kid thought of you only as "angry" mom or dad. The same goes for your kids. Dr. Bernstein explained: “The lack of time for parents to catch their breath and reflect, can lead them sometimes to see their children in global ways. As a result, toxic labels such as: lazy, problematic, selfish, and inconsiderate can result in parents influencing their children to be locked into a negative identity." Focus on solutions, not labels.

Every kid is unique, even within the same family, and each one has something to bring to the table. Maybe you find it easier to get along with one sibling over the other or have more in common, but comparing kids against each other is toxic - especially if you think it will result in a change of behavior. Dr. Greenberg says, “Instead, you should celebrate each child’s individuality; comparisons damage self-esteem and do not serve as motivation.”

No, she didn't . She problably was too absorbed by her phone to even have even noticed it if the kid would have demolished the entire stand.

Ask her to leave that place so you can look at your child. If she goes ape, video it and tell her that your facebookfriends need a good laugh.

Sorry, but this is bad management failing to tell staff that they are allowed to confront parents and kids on unwanted behaviour. These things happen because for staff it's a "Not worth risking my job for"-issue.

Ok, that's when you call a staffmember. But sadly, it will show that nobody really cares: The staffmember knows that confronting the parents could cost him his job, The parents would trhow a rage when confronted and are comped with entire new furniture for their home. Sad but true.
