Owners Exploited This Husky Until She Could No Longer Walk And Produce Puppies – This Woman Gave Her A Second Chance In Life

Interview With Owner

Silvia Rayssa preaches one particular message on her dog’s Instagram: “Better than buying a life, is saving one! Rescue the mistreated, save the injured, love the abandoned…” And the story of this Siberian husky, Maya, is a heartwrenching and then heartwarming testimony to that. One animal rescue story a day reminds us that there are still good people among us.

Up until 5 years ago, Maya had only seen the worst side of humanity in her life—she was forced to breed repeatedly in a ‘puppy factory’ in Goiânia, Brazil. Maya was completely worn out and already paraplegic because of the horrible treatment and conditions when she was found. Her irreversible health problems made her useless to the kennel, so they were about to get rid of her. But Rayssa stepped into the rescue and gave this dog a second chance at a happy life and by saving Maya, she also saved herself.

Bored Panda has reached out to Rayssa and she told us the whole beautiful rescue story, so prepare your tissues in advance.

More info: Instagram

The kennel was going to get rid of her because she was no longer useful to make profit because of her horrible health condition

“I think we have all asked ourselves: ‘is our destiny already set? Or is it all just a fluke?’ I have certainly asked myself this many times…

A colleague (also a protector of animals) received a complaint: the owners of a clandestine kennel were trying to ‘get rid’ of the mother since she was no longer serving to generate profit (puppies), they wanted to give her rat poison to ‘end the suffering of the poor thing.'” Rayssa told Bored Panda.

Maya was severely injured and already paraplegic when she was found in a cold cage in 2016

“August 28, 2016 is a date that I will never forget. When we think we have seen everything in this life, I realize that we have never seen enough. We got there and she was lying, totally hurt. She drank her own urine and ate her own feces, a scene that broke my heart. As we put Maya in the car, it was possible to see her relief at leaving that place.”

“She drank her own urine and ate her own feces, a scene that broke my heart,” Rayssa decided to bring the dog home and give her a fresh start

“She became paraplegic because she was beaten up, she was tied up, it was very heavy to hear”

Maya appeared in Rayssa’s life when they both needed it the most: “she was the one who saved me”

“I have always been passionate about animals, I always felt that I had a different connection with them… After all, how can I explain so much love?

I was in a difficult time in my life, you know when things lose their meaning a little? As if you were losing your strength day after day? I felt that way in the face of all the evil that I saw happening in the world.

I was not living, I was simply existing… I still vividly remember the day when my heart cried out for a ‘big and special animal.’ What I felt in my soul after that, I will never find words to describe…”

The new owner didn’t leave Maya’s side for the first 48 hours. She was very weak, but had a strong desire to live in her eyes

“The first 48 hours I did not leave her side for even 1 second, because we were afraid that she would not resist because of the serious condition in which she was found; but I saw in her eyes that she would not give up, that she was very strong and would not give up… I saw her desire to live!”

“Maya was a little skittish at first, but who could blame her? She had never known the love of a family, she never knew a caress. For 5 years of her life, she only knew a cold, dark cage. She only knew the worst side of the human being.”

After that, she went on a year-and-a-half-long treatment trying to restore both her physical and mental health

“Then we started her long treatment, we took several trips to veterinary clinics. Knowing about Maya’s history, I already imagined that she wouldn’t walk again, and that was never a problem for me… But to know that she became paraplegic because she was beaten up, she was tied up, it was very heavy to hear. I can’t imagine even a shred of the whole nightmare she’s been through.”

“About three weeks later we were still struggling hard to restore her health until we had a big scare: she urgently needed a blood transfusion, otherwise she would not be able to resist. That day my world turned upside down. I tried to be strong for her. But I could see in her eyes that she was being strong for both of us!”

Since she couldn’t walk, she started her adaptation to the wheelchair: “since then she has been free to fly, free to go wherever she wants”

“We started her adaptation to the wheelchair, and from the first moment she got into her car seat, she already knew, ‘now I am free’ and since then she has been free to fly, free to go wherever she wants.”

“Maya was in continuous treatment for about a year and a half. And she has always shown herself to be stronger every day! And learning to leave the nightmare she lived in the past. Learning that her future would be written together!”

After almost 5 years, Maya has come a long way since August 28, 2016 and has transformed unrecognizably

“More than four and a half years have passed, and even today the transformation of Maya is remembered by everyone who followed it closely for the incredible desire to live that she always had!”

Her incredible desire to live and finally being able to experience the good side of people brought Maya to the wholesome life she has now

“People say that I saved Maya, but I always answer the following: ‘no, she was the one who saved me.’ Maya changed my life, and that of many people with the history of overcoming, compassion, and love that we are still living today. There are no wounds that love cannot heal!

And Maya is a great example of this, she was welcomed with such respect and affection that even the deepest wounds of her soul, today, are just scars that show that she was stronger than what hurt her because her scars are the marks of overcoming that only a warrior has.”

It breaks my heart that Maya has had such a terrible start to life, no animal deserves that. Thank goodness for people like Silvia ❤️ Btw the bows in Maya’s hair are just precious!

ADOPT, DON"T SHOP. Do people still need to be told this? People who want purebreds are the ones driving this industry of animal cruelty. All for sake of their egos. Your dog's job isn't to make you look cool, loser.

I am not against breeding. Dog races have developed over tens of thousands of years and most oof them for a reason. But who in their right mind just buys a puppy without seeing the mother and the conditions it grew up in??

People need to be punished/fined for trying to sell dogs (especially) mixed breeds for anything over $800. In the last year all breeders have been selling regular dogs for 3 to 5 Grand! Ive gotten mixed breed huskies for 120 - 200. They were healthy

I was hoping to read the breeder has been shut down. Maybe I missed it. As for Huskys the majority of people should not have one, no fault intended for the breed - it's just that they are a high demand animal.

Silvia and Maya are wonderful to read about and I wish them only the best! I also hope Karma catches up with the lowlife, scumbag breeders. Regarding the statement "the majority of people should not have one", I agree. A husky is a great dog - for people who are active! I'm originally from Alaska in the USA (Iditarod, dog mushing, etc) and when I moved to another state, it broke my heart to see how many huskies are surrendered to rescues because people didn't research the needs of the breed and didn't realize most are VERY active dogs. Huskies are AWESOME, but most need a lot of exercise, activity and mental stimulation or they get bored and then get destructive.

The outrageous price of puppies leads to this awful type of exploitation of dogs. Maya was very lucky that she was rescued and able to find joy in her life.

This post was well documented, a heart warming story, Maya was very strong, the will to live, thankfully the right person or people, were there at the right time, I wish I knew, that breeders, were shut down, and charged, when anyone sees similar situations, they need to report to authorities, there should be jail time served, this type of people, are not human, the worst of the worst, I would like to see them, in a dungeon and fed bread and water, minimal amount, how many dogs in puppy mills, suffer severely, Maya is beautiful, God Bless her rescuer !!!

Mybsisyer and I have been involved in many dog and cat rescues, and although I know there are good people, sometimes it seems even one animal abusers is too many. Please, adopt. Learn about your animal of choice, give your time and learn to understand them, and they you. Please don't support this kind of abuse.

This is such a terrible story and I am such an animal lover until I normally cannot finish stories like this to the end. But out of respect to Maya and all of the other animals I am glad I pushed myself. Thank you to the family who saved Maya and thank you in advance to the future families who will save other animals who are being tortured. If we stop the demand, we stop the supply, keep that thought in mind. Maya is so pretty and I definitely love her outfits. Somewhere in time the people who beat her will pay at some point. You can't do harm and not expect it to be ok, thank you. Adopt don't shop.

The world need more people who have a heart for those poor animals. I have had two elder dogs from the shelter. Not in such bad condition. But I did what I could to make their last couple of years as nice as possible. It was very stressful at times ( mentally and money wise) but I would do it over again. And yes these breeding "factories" must have an end. But: if you want a pure breed or you are stuck to a certain kind of dog breed wise even that is possible via shelter or rescue groups. I love Labrador retrievers. And my elder labs came from there. So no excuse going to "breeders" Lots of love to you and and the beautiful dog!!!!

What a pretty young thing. 💜 And such tenacity for surviving such conditions.

Oh my, tears came to my eyes! You all are angels who saved her life. Without a "You" there wouldn't be a "Her." God Bless all of you. There is a special hell for abusers!! They will get what they deserve!

Seriously? On an inspiring article about dog & owner coming together to beat the odds & start a new & fulfilling life, all you want is to see the injuries that were blurred out? What is wrong with you?

Wonderful for this dog but how many more are left in cages? This needs to stop!

These breeders should be forced to live in the same conditions as they force the dog to live in! I am so glad Maya not only survived, but found a beautiful home and human companion.

How hard do you have to hit a husky to break her spine??? It makes me cry just to think about it. I am amazed the dog came out of this ordeal so freindly and (apparently) peaceful.
