Guy Shows How He Wakes Up His Blind And Deaf Dog Without Scaring Her, Receives Almost 13 Million Likes
Is there a need for something adorable and sweet in your life? Well, here’s a heartwarming story about a deaf and visually impaired dog that will probably make you cry.
Plum is a 10-month-old Australian shepherd. Sadly, she was born with disabilities and taking care of her is no easy task. Her owner, Aiden Michael Mann, had difficulties waking her up from her naps because she would always get scared. Even the slightest touch would make her jump. Nothing worked, not even snacks under her nose.

We asked Aiden when he got Plum and how he met her: “I got Plum July of 2019. She was 6 months old and just the sweetest pup. My coworkers work with a lot of rescues and were fostering her and her brother, and I was trying to find homes for them. When she brought Plum to work, I immediately loved her and wanted her.”
Here is how Aiden wakes her up from her naps without scaring her

“She was just a happy pup and I knew Lola (my other dog) and I would make a great home for her. It wasn’t really a hard decision to make, she deserved a loving home and a happy life,” Aiden told Bored Panda when asked why he adopted Plum.

After some attempts, he found the best way to do it: gently blowing on her muzzle. Plum then wakes up still a little startled, but immediately searches for her owner and runs to him for snuggles.

When asked why he named her Plum, the owner answered: “My coworker that was fostering her actually named her and I loved it so we kept it.”

Aiden posted this special way of waking her up on TikTok and it went viral! The video has almost 13 million likes and was viewed almost 54 million times: “I had no idea it would get this many views. I was blown away when I went back and checked TikTok and saw her video going viral.”
The comments are filled with positivity and love. Some even said they would die for Plum and I have to agree.

“The biggest struggle was probably learning to communicate and learning what works and doesn’t. No dog is the same, so what works for my dog may not work for another. So it was a lot of trial and error until we were both on the same page,” said Aiden when talking about all the struggles of raising an animal with hearing and vision impairments.

“Plum is the happiest and sweetest dog you’ve ever met. Her favorite toy is a ball, she loves to cuddle, and her favorite place is anywhere Lola and I are.”

“It took a little for her to memorize the house, get used to the way things were set up, and get used to the way we did things. Her and Lola got along right away and Lola quickly became her ‘safety blanket.'”

Even with all the problems she was born with, she is happy, playful, and full of love for her wonderful owner

“My favorite thing about Plum is that even with her differences, she doesn’t let it affect her. She lives life to the fullest and is still such a happy dog.”

Share on FacebookWith my blind and deaf dog I would place my hand near her nose so that she could first smell me. Would then touch her bedding or our bedding (depending on where she'd chosen to sleep) so that she felt the movement. She rarely slept on the floor once she lost her sight and her hearing - she was older when that happened. Occasionally we would touch her fur, as gently as a breath, by just lightly stroking the ends really softly with our fingertips. Softly, softly with the blind and deaf pets.
Thank you for sharing and being a kind human being, showing us how to be gentle and better with puppos who need a little more patience.
Load More Replies...We had a blind and deaf dog and we would always use a little peanut butter to wake her up. We would put some on a spoon and wave it in front of her nose. It never startled her, and she always woke up so happy because she was getting her favorite treat!
Sadly can't do that with my dog - peanut butter makes her sick. Just a word of warning that it's not suitable for all doggos! EDIT: For those asking about additives to the peanut butter I'm afraid it wasn't that. It was a brand especially for dogs and did not have xylitol. It was pure peanut butter with no other ingredients whatsoever. Some dogs really can't eat peanut butter because of the peanuts. Thanks for the discussion though as clarification is good.
Load More Replies...I immediately thought of blowing on her. Such a soft and gentle awakening. Her owner/friend, has a huge heart.
And also smells like him. That’s the important thing for a dog. Plum probably initially startles from the movement of his breath, but calms once her nose realizes it smells like Daddy.
Load More Replies...I’m not crying, you’re crying! 😭 This is the reason why I told my kids that we are going to adopt a dog instead of buying. Love this! 💕
Oh, you've made my evening! People adopting more of the lovely needy dogs that are in shelters makes me really happy. One of my dogs is an older rescue boy and he's taken time to settle in but there has been nothing more rewarding then watching him learn to trust us. He never used to roll on his back and let us stroke his tummy, he never wagged his tail - now he does all of that and more. Actively pats us awake for breakfast and demands cuddles. Bless you and your children! ❤❤❤
Load More Replies...I thought immediately in putting bacon near her nose... what is wrong with me?
Nothing wrong with you - bacon works on humans. Definitely would work on a dog! She'd be highly disappointed if she then didn't get to eat the bacon though!
Load More Replies...Aiden is soooo amazing. He is actually a FTM Trans Man. :) He has such a beautiful Soul!
Load More Replies...Aiden, we could do with a lot more people like you. You will never receive the depth of love you will receive from Plum. 💗
lightly tapping on the floor works too. I use that with my deaf blind ferrets. Or food. Food always works! Their sniffers sure do work well!
bravo SIR and to your great lil gal. It is not easy with blind and deaf dogs I know over my 68 yrs I have had 6 of them and each one is so unique and they lived long lives, 3 to age 20, 3 to age 18. GOD is pleased with you sir. PAX+
Why are you bothering your dog anyway? this isnt heart warming or sweet. The dog reacts like Any dog would.
I think you have a point. Does the dog need to be woken up? If not, leave her alone. If she does - a vet appointment maybe - then blowing in her face? Well, it's not something any dog I've known has liked at all. I think there are better ways. Tapping the floor so she feels the vibration and letting her know you are near by letting her smell you. Though I do think his heart is 100% in the right place and Plum is clearly very loved and that's the most important part of this.

Your great man💖🙂Plum you are amazing beautiful puppy💓😍 Your both a blessing 💓😍 Very touching beautiful story💜
So kind and thoughtful. Thank you for this beautiful girl, it must be so frightening without these two very important senses.
Plum is such a beautiful and adorable dog and so lucky to have such a kind amazing loving and caring owner as you. I hope that all 3 of you, Lola included of course have a long and very happy life together. You deserve to. Please give both dogs a big hug from me. ☺☺♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥☺☺
That is amazing! All people could learn from you! She's very obviously a happy pup!
Immediately started to cry after watching the video - which brought my tripod right to me (he's incredibly sensitive to my emotions). Such a beautiful girl & what an amazing Dad!
So is Aiden looking for a home too? Cuz I could help him out with that. 😉 Seriously though, those two are adorable! I had a blind/deaf puppy who came into the vet clinic where I was volunteering in high school many moons ago. I fell hard for that little guy. His people weren't sure they wanted to keep him after learning the extent of his disabilities. I would have scooped him up in a second if I hadn't been still living at home. No indoor pets allowed at my parent's house unfortunately.
These are not only tears of happiness for you and Plum. These are tears of greatness that you both created.
Thank you so much for adopting Plum; thank you for your compassion.
What a nice guy! So Happy for Both of you! I hope you find your special Human someday too! What a special bonding they have. Made me smile! 💖
I needed this wonderful story today! LOVE that photo of the two pooches looking like superheroes!
She's a beautiful little baby 😍😂she's lucky to have someone like you in her life, I need her to be with my benji now, he's a lovely black labrador
Poor Plum looks like an Australian Sheppard who was improperly bred by an irresponsible breeder. Aussie Sheps need to be bred a very specific way otherwise there is a high chance the can go deaf and/or blind. Usually they are incorrectly bred in an effort to get the blue/green eyes. I'm glad someone is taking care of Plum, your a good guy !
I hate breeders, they are greedy and heartless. Don't buy, adopt - save a life of an innocent animal.
Load More Replies...Our old kitty was deaf. He would get startled if you walked up behind him for pets. We all began to stomp a bit while walking so he could feel the vibration in the floor and didn’t startle.
Maybe put the phone on vibrate next to her? I think he has got a good idea going here. Such a beautiful dog.
A suddenly vibrating phone would be more likely to make a dog jump.
Load More Replies...It can depend on how deeply the animal sleeps - my dog wouldn't have woken by being blown on gently and had to be stroked softly awake.
