Barber Tells This ‘Shy’ Insurance Man To Grow A Beard, And It Ends Up Transforming His Life
If our list of men before-and-after growing a beard growing a beard didn’t convince you that males look way better with facial hair, this story definitely will. Gwilym Pugh was a 21-year-old businessman man who started a successful insurance company in his spare bedroom. However, working from home and injuries made him gain a lot of weight. 280 pounds, to be exact. However, his life-damaging lifestyle changed after his barber urged Gwilym to grow a ginger beard!
“At that time I was pretty overweight, working 12 hours a day, plagued with injuries which meant I couldn’t train at all,” the Welshman told Kathryn Williams from Wales Online. “The business was doing okay, but I decided I need to get my life in order and wanted to get healthy again.”
Gwilym and his friends formed a folk band several years ago. His barber told him to grow a beard to look the part. In line with his new look, the freshly-baked musician decided to expand his transformation cleaning up his diet. The biggest change, however, was quitting his desk job.
“It was the best thing for my health as I stopped sitting for nine to 10 hours a day,” the man who lost 90 pounds over five years explained. As he was shedding weight and growing his beard, Gwilym created an Instagram account. Eventually, Welsh tailor Nathan Palmer stumbled across the now beard model’s picture, and things began escalating really fast.
Now, Gwilym is part of the London agency AMCK Models. He has worked on campaigns with Vans, Bud Light, Diesel, and other big names. His hard work even allowed him to become an ambassador for David Beckham’s new male grooming brand, House 99!
Scroll through pictures of Gwilym Pugh’s weight loss transformation, and you might find the much-needed inspiration to change your life for better, too!

Share on FacebookHe looks ten times better but it's not just because of the beard. He lost weight, ditched the geek glasses, sculpted his body, dyed his hair redder and started wearing colored contacts in a more intense shade of blue. All of that, together, makes him look better.
And he never smiles.... Gotta have that broody look going.....
Load More Replies...OMG that's amazing. His beard even made him muscles and dress better. If I didn't know better it'd say him altering his entire lifestyle would be the cause of that and not A beard. Dressing better, working out, not smiling anymore in any pictures. Eating better probably as well. He even got a personal photographer that brings him to a lot more interesting places to take photos of him. That's some beard. Makes it also seem alot easier if you just have to get a beard to get all that. This is an eye opener Boredpanda.
Monika, I may have been born at night, but not last night. You begin things by stating that he was a shy, but successful, insurance businessman. That's an oxymoron. I have Never, ever seen an insurance salesman, who was shy. They don't exist. Granted he made a life-changing decision, but the beard was the result of, not the cause of this.
Not really! I am very very shy, and working from home, you can talk over the phone or type, and you do not have to meet the people! That's why its bad! One gets into a room and not socialise at all.
Load More Replies...I know someone who grew a beard to improve their self-image. It didn't work for her.
I am on the same path. Quit the job I was unhappy with, began to eat healthy, and working out. I am at the very beginning, but I know I am going to make it. I am overweight and although not plagued by health problems so far, but you can't abuse your body a lifetime long. I will be healthy, losing weight, and I will look better because I will be happy. But I definitely am not growing a beard....
It's what's inside that counts.........oh, wait, no it isn't, it's all about his outside looks. Carry on.
As a shy and self conscious woman one the few things i envy about men is the ability and choice to just - grow a beard to hide behind. OK - as a woman i woudnt actually WANT to sprout long and luxousious facial hair - but still!!
It's pretty much how makeup works for women, you know ...
Load More Replies...He IS beautiful! This does NOT mean however, that ALL men look better with facial hair!
Um I think it STARTED with the beard people and it went from there. The beard didn't do it ALL. Why are the comments so judgmental and kind of stupid really. Can't you just be happy for this hunk of gorgeous man. I don't get it. Okay, so he dyed his hair and wore color contacts. So what. Title is just wrong making it all about the beard, which is silly, but we can still appreciate the transformation. SMH
I agree, it was a launching point to see himself differently. Glad he chose the viking path and not the troll.
Load More Replies...So? I had mine fixed too. I always find it hilarious when people get snotty about plastic surgery. If it bothered him, why not get it fixed? I hated mine starting when I was a small child. As soon as I had the money, I took care of it.

Oh yes, some guys when in their thirties, decide to sport a beard and it is just magical!!! But this guy redid his whole persona, not just the beard.

Come on now! Not just about the beard, the had the basic good structure to begin with, he lost that weight, trained, got himself in shape plus he is PHOTOGENIC.... but you have to have had the basics... if not, it would not have worked at all.
The only negative things, to me, are all of his body tats. As a rule, I don't think tattoos look good on people. That's just a personal preference: I like to see skin, not ink.
I'm not for or against tattoos but a cautionary note. I know from personal experience that as you age they start looking like s**t. Take it for what it's worth, I didn't care at the time either.
Load More Replies...So, grow a beard and it makes you buff. Damn, that's me doomed forever then, might as well go back to the chocolate chip cookies and ice cream
Holy ginger-beard! He was cute before, now he is sexxayyy! Fabulous that gave him confidence!
If only I was 40 years younger and 65 pounds lighter... But I still appreciate eye candy!
I really wasn't liking him much at all.. but then they showed the photo of him being nice to a cat and now I have no choice but to like him. I just hope he took the cat home and didn't leave it in the street.
WOW!I would like to meet that barber!Congrats!Great change, this young man is amazing, good for him!So hansome!!
I must admit it: I don't like redhaireds but this one, OH ME!
I think, his growing a beard, was the impetus to make changes! He noticed that he didn’t like how he looked, so he lost weight, he worked out, he kept a picture journal of it all, he joined a band for fun, and stopped sitting for hours a day! So the beard, WAS , the first small change, that began his new way of living! Not the other way around!
I think, he is absolutely amazing! What a small change can do, to change your entire life! Like faith and the mustard seed! All it takes, is one small change and faith, that you can do it! And in his case, a superb bit of luck and happenstance! It’s never too late to make changes in your life, to make it better, big or small, have faith it can be done! Wow! I’m very impressed!
DAAAY...UMMM! I'm a sucker for a beard and red hair. Put them together and yahoo!
The beard and the long hair caught my attention, him gently playing with a cat in a park sealed the deal. I'm buying.
Yes, just the beard. Weight loss, muscles, being good looking (he already was, actually), wearing fashionable clothes doesn't mean anything. It's just the beard. And this is why I'm going to shave, because now I know my beard doesn't work properly, and it's no longer worth to keep it on my face. ;)
Oh, thanks Bored Panda. Rub it in that I can't grow a proper beard and look fabulous af :') My days of modeling won't even start :')
New look is great but he lost his smile........need to smile Gwilym. Otherwise you just look like any other man. Your smile makes your eyes twinkle and makes you likeable. Otherwise you look like you just want to plunder and pillage. Think about it! Signed: Carol Blackburn
adding a beard, being bald and overweight makes a person look prematurely old
It isn't the beard.. At the main picture you notice a better hair, better skin color, better look in the eyes, & in the rest of the pictures, you notice a better body & style.. This man found his mojo, it's not the beard that made the difference, but his new attitude to life, he might even look better with a clean shave.
yeah, this definitely worked for him. Don't even look like the same guy... I love facial hair.
He's the same person just more aware. You can change the outside but the inside is what counts. Girls you should stop looking for bad boys and go for the nice guy. I did and he never let me down, my love and best friend.
I conclude that this is inspiring. Not because he is hot now but because he took control of his life with one simple suggestion. It teaches me that when you feel good about yourself, do not limit yourself to just that one experience, keep on finding the next challenge. He literally transformed from unhappy and office average to adventurer and bold.
Um I think it STARTED with the beard people. I doubt they are saying the BEARD created all this. Why does everyone want to negate everything. Jealousy I guess. Be happy for him or stfu. Just sayin. SMH
Okay I'm sold. If growing a beard will help me lose weight and get a modeling contract then I'm in. Now, tell me how to grow a beard. (Honestly, I'm not sure my husband will be too thrilled with it though.)
He will only be annoyed if it is better than his lol
Load More Replies...If this is the same person, then I congratulate him on the incredible will and discipline he had to complete this total transformation. However, I have a suspicion that it is not him. The two side-by-side pics don't seem to square for me. The eyebrows, bridge of his nose and lower lip seem to be slightly more angular and slender. The picture where he is smiling as a model his cheeks look nice and round, then I think MAYBE...I don't know that beard theory just seems suspect.
I agree. Best thing i ever did was grow a beard. I shaved it off once and my ex said good God you look awful. Like an American car with all the chrome removed lol A-man-is-o...01ba9d.jpg
On the first pic of his change, the color of his beard is amazing. It's like it's on fire!
Yes, but it almost all gets undone because of those ridiculous tatoos....too bad.
He is young, resourceful and dedicated to a goal. Goals everyone should strive for. And for those not young, try to be young in thought. The wonder and excitement of every brand new day. We all have one life, one body. Live it and love it.
Hi, its true that there are many religious obligations and myths that restricts men to grow beard. http://mybeardguy.com/
Good for him though personally I think he would look better in his after picture WITHOUT the beard.
You know what will make you shave a beard? Eating fried eggs. Try getting yolk out of your beard. Eating sucks with a beard so incredibly much. I don't get how dudes can have full crop dusters over a beard. I sport one each winter because it's cold out, but in the spring I go back to short scruff. Beards are better in the brochure.
With the hair long, he’d make a good Thor if Chris Hemsworth ever put up his cape.
urgg. another glorification of body. I liked him better before. Now he looks as if he spends all his time looking at himself in the mirrow: oh I am so handsome...superficiality again, nobody is going to take the time to look what's really inside.
I love beards! His looks best when its kept neatly trimmed and I love the long hair! He has such beautiful red hair! Amazing the transformation!
Did he grow his eyebrows as well? Am I the only one who doubts this is the same guy?
Nope!! Not convinced to grow a beard!! Facial hair on females not attractive.. don't fall for it ladies, facial hair on us will not give you the hot bod you've always wanted and a beard would so mess with those smoldering eyes and pouty duck lips.. hahaha.. facial hair on most guys.. definitely attractive. I know I love it on my guy!!
It's not the beard. The man already has a good-looking face to begin with. He just needed to lose weight and draw more focus to it. The fiery red hair and bright eyes also help to tie his whole look together. The beard definitely helps, but it's not the center of his attractiveness by any means.
Too bad I can't grow a full beard... Guess I will have to be ugly for the rest of my life.
I am so proud of this man! From Geek to Chic in 5 yrs! Not only the looks but he is now in the best health of his life! Darn good thing he has a girlfriend who keeps him grounded or all this fuss and new found fame might make a bro go vain! *L* What a great life lesson for all of us. It's never to late to change your life. You just have to get up off your bum and DO IT!
How is this even the same person. Picture 1 and then the model pictures are so far removed from looking alike.
It won't convince me. It's not the beard - that was just a small first step, and if he hadn't taken another, he still would've been an overweight guy working in his spare bedroom, only with a beard (which probably wouldn't look so marvellous, since facial hair actually needs lots of care to look awesome). I admire the guy's transformation, but let's not give too much credit to the beard.
The beard is beautiful when it's trimmed, but that Grizzly Adams look has got to go
The beard looks beautiful when it's trimmed, but that Grizzly Adams look has got to go!
Any other redheads find other redheads VERY unattractive? I look at this guy and I'm like "ew ew hard pass nope". It's like something in my DNA says "regressive genes! Do not reproduce!"
That's exactly how it works. You shouldn't be with a similar genes partner, that's why blondes go USUALLY for dark hairs or blue eyes for dark eyes, etc. Your DNA wants you to be as far away from similar genes as possible because mixing similar genes can lead to disabilities in children.
Load More Replies...No way you can tell me he did not get plastic surgery...his nose is completely different...
I don't see how it's possible he did not get plastic surgery, his nose is completely different...
"If this won’t convince you to grow a beard, we don’t know what will." I couldn't even if I wanted to. I'm a woman.
"If this won’t convince you to grow a beard, we don’t know what will." Problem is I couldn't even if I wanted to. I'm a woman.
He's very dishy but in some of the pics the beard is too long, I'll give him 7/10 !!!!!
So the message of 'be comfortable with who you are' means less than 'if you are uncomfortable with who you are, modify your entire look and lifestyle until you become someone else'?
Until you became what you consider the best version of yourself.
Load More Replies...Not so much the beard, but the weight loss, and the change in life outlook. The beard was just one part. But growing a beard doesn't magically transform you from zero to hero. If you don't believe me Google what Macaulay Culkin looked like with long hair and a beard.... uuughly
Yes, just the beard. Weight loss, muscles, being good looking (he already was, actually), wearing fashinable clothes doesn't mean anything. It's just the beard. And this is why I'm going to shave, because now I know my beard doesn't work properly, and it's no longer worth to keep it on my face.
Does no-one notice that in all the 'before' pictures he's badly lit by direct flash and wears a blatantly-stupid grin on his face and on all of the 'after' pictures he's professional lit and is channeling Zoolander's 'Blue Steel'? Of course losing weight, working out and avoiding bad lighting will enhance anyone's appearance but the beard is entirely optional and the least relevant factor in the image modification.
This article makes it look like you're better off with a beard and tattoos, when you really aren't. If he didn't get into modeling, his chances of getting a job looking like that would be 80% lower than before in most places around the world. Which, I think, absolutely sucks, but it's how modern society works nonetheless.
being bald, overweight and sporting a beard make you look old prematurely
Uhhh...how did he lose weight in his NOSE? The bridge is not the same shape at all. Either not the same person, or he had rhinoplasty. Please specify. Totally okay with rhinoplasty; I've had one myself.
I am going to have to call b******t. Unless maybe he got a nose job...maybe had a brow tuck and facial bone structure adjustment. Unless we actually see a video of him showing us who he really is, this will have to be a b******t story...
He’s healthy, happy, and fit. The beard really isn’t the difference here.
I am a redhead but I have never been attracted to any redhead guy. THIS one I am attracted to.
I have seen plenty of women with beards lol

...it wasn'0t the beard, it was the hope he could ACTUALLY get laid.
Unfortunately, he still has ginger hair and now also has a bunch of ugly tattoos. But, good on him for changing his life.
Losing a large amount of weight can make a drastic change to your face and it is likely that someone put make up on him for these photos. So eyebrow tint or eye shadow.

So he decided to get in shape after having grown a beard? I don't really get the logic here...
Sucks he's got all of the Tat's - He'd look good as a Highlander on Outlander
...it wasn'0t the beard, it was the hope he could ACTUALLY get laid.
Unfortunately, he still has ginger hair and now also has a bunch of ugly tattoos. But, good on him for changing his life.
Losing a large amount of weight can make a drastic change to your face and it is likely that someone put make up on him for these photos. So eyebrow tint or eye shadow.
