Some people cry to get their way. They are masterful at manipulation. So I don't give in automatically when someone starts crying. I try to reason with those people, but if they persist in crying, repeatedly displaying a sad face, looking mournful & other manipulative behaviors, then I ignore them completely. If you reward them by letting them have their way, then they are not growing and developing appropriately.

Why don't they just give the bigger beds to the larger people and then whoever sleeps in the twin beds in a shared room pays less. They should have discussed this beforehand. The larger friend should have said something beforehand if she thought she'd be uncomfortable in a twin instead of just hoping she'd get a bigger bed...

Yes I don't understand why she didn't say something in the beginning? Is it really that embarrassing to say "Hey guy I don't think I'm gonna be comfortable in a twin bed. I'm willing to pay extra to switch with someone if I don't get a queen."

American hospital beds are definitely not wider than an American twin. No clue about any other country's hospital beds or twin beds.

The OP says all of them go on a trip together every year. This was NOT a new situation on choosing where to sleep. The one who got the twin bed was just lucky she hadn't gotten one before. I'm obese, and I can sleep fine in a twin, in fact I had a twin until a couple of years ago. OP is very NOT an AH.
