26 TV Shows That Don’t Deserve The Praise They Get, As Pointed Out By Folks In This Online Group
Knowing how many TV shows there are, it gets hard to pick that one funny or interesting show that is really worth watching. Have you ever experienced that situation when someone recommended you watch something and after you did, you were disappointed and questioning why people like this series so much? Having this in mind, one Reddit user was curious to find out which TV series that seem to receive the most praise are actually overrated.
The post with 30.2k upvotes was soon turned into a list of various old and new TV shows that a lot of viewers saw as masterpieces, but some people found them to be overvalued and not that good. It included some of the all-time favorites such as Friends and Game of Thrones. Some users explained why some of the series are not so good, stressing some details of the plots.

Bust out the downvotes folks: The Super Bowl.
No continuity. They keep changing the main characters every god damn year, the central romantic arc between Tom Brady & everyone on Earth got stale real quick. Weirdest laugh track of any show on this list, guaranteed. The lack of female representation is beyond cringe.
Besides Tom Brady there isn’t a single female character for almost 30 seasons.
But the final straw for me was the way they killed off Kaepernick, finally get a character with real substance & kill him off b/c cancel culture has no f**king boundaries.
Ugh.
I used to watch it only for the commercials and the half time show, now those suck too.
The music sucks. Bruno Mars wanted to perform with Metallica but they said No. Then he picked Red Hot Chilli Pepers and they said only with restrictions. Og but we have no issues with a hundred half naked people tweerking on stage. If they want to have pop, r&b and rap that's 100% fine. But equality means everyone should be represented. Down vote me all you want want but equality doesn't mean snuffing out one for the other.
That's the only good thing about the Stuper Bowl! Commercials so good, they make whole shows of them.

They killed off Kaepernick because he only threw pick 6s'.
It pretty much is a soap opera. Kaepernick was getting benched and threw a hissy fit for attention. Aaron Rodgers threw a fit and got a new coach. Payton manning cries and calls daddy on the side lines when he is not winning. Any actor who does good for a season demands more pay.
"Run three yards. Fall down. Pile up. Run three yards. fall down. pile up." Name that movie ;)
Nonsense. there are plenty of "Women" in football. Interviewers on the field and the dime a dozen "I'm only there for the sex appeal" Football talk shows where they have to constantly look at a mountain of notes and stats in front of them to "seem like I know what I'm talking about" while they sit there and look pretty. Meanwhile, look at the other male anchors around them, almost no notes/stats lol
Haven't watched a game since Kap's protest and following treatment. The NFL can screw themselves.
Okay: dead on with the TB comment, and the laugh track, if that actually refers to the commercials. There's been no female character in baseball in its 150 year history, nor in the 118 World Series that have been played either. by the way. Where's the indignation over that? While I agree Kaepernick got the short end of the stick in the public opinion forum, once the other teams figured out how to get to him, he just wasn't that effective. This whole rant is just dumb.
Re: killing off Kaepernick. His team went 2-14. Both wins were without him. You don't go 0-14 and ask for a raise.
American football: 12 minutes of actual playtime surrounded by hours of guys standing around discussing their next move. vs European football/soccer: 90 minute game starts with a whistle, and players don't stop running till their hearts burst (or till the 15 min break between halves)!
I've never seen the Super Bowl...and this was an awesome description...no one tell me otherwise. Lol
I tuned in as I'm a huge fan of owls, the Superb Owl didn't have one in the whole show.
For non-Americans the biggest problem is that the sparse action leads to it being incredibly boring.
The Super Bowl has definitely run its course. Now it's just another example of American idiocy.
Greys anatomy - that show just needs to end.
That show needed to end when it started showing sexual hijinks as the primary concern of interns, residents, and doctors. No. Seriously, no. Sure, some hanky-panky may occur, but trust me, we're not sitting on the floor maundering on about what to do with our lives. We're reading another chart, putting on the game face, and dreaming of uninterrupted sleep. (From my days as a med student -onward, anyway.)
The walking dead is something that always baffled me how it went beyond ~2 seasons.
They had the same loop of storyline repeated in every season - they run, they find shelter, they go out for food, someone gets bitten, they get overrun, they have to find somewhere new. Rinse and repeat for like 10 seasons.
I had exactly the same feeling with this show (i.e. the rinse and repeat). It got to the stage where I thought it didn't even need to be a zombie show, it could've just been any generic post apocalypse scenario as the zombies became just an afterthought. I made it to the mid point of season 5 then ended up missing a few episodes. I kept telling myself I'd go back and watch them but as the weeks rolled on and more and more episodes kept building I found that I didn't really care anymore. That to me is when a show is on it's way out, not love or hate for it rather total indifference. Sad really as when it started it was one of my "can't miss" shows.
How I Met Your Mother. Every episode glorifies Ted’s toxic behavior and makes it look romantic. I get so triggered watching that show
If no one else will say it, I will. Squid game is WAY overhyped. I’ve seen people say it’s the best Netflix show or even the best Korean show. If people give other Asian media a chance they’ll find way better than automatically assuming that the first Asian show they see on Netflix is the best thing ever.
Most doctor/hospital shows. They can be ok for a while but they get predictable quickly and run for way too long.

Ugh, yes. My daughter was obsessed with it. A show that basically glorified teen suicide!
Game of thrones hands down, it left good threads hanging but never really stitched them into anything.
Suits - Most of the episodes consists of these high and mighty lawyers consistently running into ‘dead ends’, not knowing what to do, but they will be having a side conversation and the person they’re talking to makes one remark about something AND THAT’S IT, they have found their answers. Onto the next episode to do the same exact thing! It’s cheap writing and office drama, he said she said stuff.
Maybe you have got a point, but I really loved the Harvey character. 🤗
Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. In reality, neither of them are funny.

Intense emotional sensations to get your weekly cry in which is healthy sure but not the masterpiece everyone’s Mom makes it out to be.
Rick and Morty. It gets waaaay too much credit for a show filled with nonsense and fart jokes.
I love the show, but agree about the fan base. There’s an egotistical current that runs through it. Fans always talk about how only intelligent people like the show, and if you don’t it’s because you’re not as gifted as them. (They’ll usually use big words to accentuate their intelligence while doing it). Not a good look.
This is coming as someone who loves anime and who’s favorite show is naruto. But it’s naruto. That show is great, and 45% filler episodes, do I need to say more?
Ugh. How old is this one? And Dragon Ball. The beginning of both is fantastic and full of character development and creates a whole story. But by now both have over stayed their welcome and its all just filling fights and drama. Same crap over and over. Like its been too long either stop or re write
How has noone said Sons Of Anarchy? It's ridiculous. We are supposed to believe that their "club" is the most important thing to them all and they would do anything for their "brothers". But they just kill each other.
It almost never shows why someone would want to be in that life.
We're supposed to root for the main character because everyone loves him but all I could think was get those children away from this.
It was just a soap opera for macho guys who don't like soap operas.
BoJack Horsemen. People act like it’s some kind of masterful psychological deep dive. But it’s just another cheep adult comedy animated show.
see, i really enjoyed the show and found it meaningful, but the meaning didn't really start to show until the 2nd or 3rd season. so i'd agree that the beginning was kind of "cheap", but i think the rest was really well done. i especially appreciated the depictions of depression throughout. i suppose it's entirely subjective though.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Every character is deplorable and it just isn’t funny.
Euphoria. It has impressive cinematography and is well acted. But the plot is all over the place and the characters are shallower than a shower . The only characters that have any depth and don't come off too stereotypical is rue and Jules.
Its a poor man's UK skins and a rich man's US skins.
Firefly. I haven't heard a single good thing about any season after the first.

Edit: Dean-alings! I never said I don't like the show, just that it is overrated in it's praise! I love the first couple of seasons.
The West Wing. S**t writing, frequently misogynistic, racist, homophobic and anti-progressive, and the milquetoast political takes have influenced an entire generation of liberal politicians to be a bunch of wieners that never accomplish anything. Admittedly the cast is great, except for Bradley Whitford, but everything else about that show is disgusting and to see it heralded as a political masterpiece makes me want to barf.
The Mandalorian. Actors are bad, it's always the same thing every single episode. Mando arrives at a planet, needs something from from the inhabitants, they agree to give it to him in exchange of a mission, he agrees, it doesn't go smoothly, and eventually gets what he needed while baby Yoda does something unexpected (whether it be disappearing or using the force to prevent Mando from being killed).

I find this list puzzling. Of course shows can't appeal to everyone's tastes. And the people who don't gravitate to a popular show will no doubt label it overrated. But I think the sitcom business model is quite simple. If enough people watch the show, Networks will pay! In theory you could perhaps only capture 5-10% of a target audience to have a profitable successful show. Meaning every single show that's ever been created is overrated to a large majority of a target audience.

People nowadays are far too critical about everything because people expect far too much. We have way too many options to choose from and in the day of social media it is easy for everyone to give their 2 cents.

It takes really talented writers to keep a show interesting when it runs f- o- r- e- v -e- r. Most of those mentioned started out well but slipped into mediocrity for lack of creative writing.
I think sooner or later the writing comes to a point where all possible plot configurations have been extinguished. And then they jump the shark.

I'll get downvoted for this but here goes, I tend to find most American sitcoms quite.....underwhelming, even those touted as masterpieces. Now don't get your knickers in a twist, it's just my opinion and doesn't mean I don't like America or Americans. I've watched Seinfeld, Park & Recreation, The Office (US) etc and whilst they aren't bad they're a bit like the comedy equivalent of plain white bread.

Hated it. Every couple of years I get it in my head to try it and Park & Recreation again, but never make it past 3 or 4 episodes. All you hear is you have to push through. It gets better. You have to make it to season 2. Why would I do that to myself?

Shows whose premise is based on selfish, annoying people being selfish and annoying: Frasier, Seinfeld, How I Met Your Mother, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Arrested Development, The Office (to some degree).
A common thread through most of these ares show that beat a dead horse, or actually a cash cow. Its the difference between the British 'The Office" and the US one. Not a huge fan of either one but that's my sense of humor. However, Gervais had ideas for 6 episodes so that's how many he made. There weren't another 17 filler episodes. He came up with another 6, said I've done all I can with this, and moved on. Almost all of these shows ran too long, both within a season and number of seasons, and they didn't have a story to tell anymore so it became 1-dimensional stereotypes of the original characters and no plot.
This list is supposed to be shows people find overrated. Yet every post is riddled with comments telling op to change the channel. They could just not read this list. Ironic.

I feel like a lot of these were less genuine gripes with shows and more people trying to seem snobby and unique. That may not be the case but that’s how it struck me.
In the u.k all the soap operas, eastenders, coronation street etc just because they have been on tv for over half a century they often receive ridiculous amounts of praise. No matter if you only watch one episode a year you can guarantee that there will be a serial killer, a poor person struggling to make ends meet, a gangster scheming to take down another characters business, teenagers struggling with whatever the social issue of the month is whether it’s drugs, eating disorders, bullying etc, then you have the character that has been in the show since it’s start who are portrayed as some kind of saint, characters returning after being killed off years before. It’s ridiculous and supposedly a portrayal of Bristol life!!!
Yep, with you on this. UK soaps (or "serial dramas" as TV channels like to call them to pretend they're more sophisticated than they are) are ridiculous. They've been on since before Noah boarded the Ark so literally every storyline was exhausted decades ago. Now, as you say, they trot out the same over the top stories year on year on year. People seemingly still lap it up for some reason though. Live and let live I suppose.

I've noticed that most really popular shows have protagonists that are all just outright horrible people. Why?
Because horrible people exist in real life maybe? Most people are a mix to some extent. Would shows full of sickly sweet do-gooders be as entertaining? You need the counter balance. That's what I tell my partner when he's saying how much he hates a certain character anyway!

This list is just confusing. I mean i personally cannot STAND Friends but ignore the attraction the majority has to it is simply being dishonest. It's like saying Prince was a shitty' artist because I didn't care for his music. You can dislike something but accept how others would find it appealing.
American tv in general..all crap, and just used to sell more plastic crap to kids or sell beer to adults. pathetic people following pathetic lives and spend the next 10 years doing reunion shows to make extra cash after your attempts of living off the lives in the first shows.....predicable and poor acting, cheap special effects and poor writing. Everybody Loves Raymond, would be my suggestion to this list. Remembered watching an episide here and there when it was fresh on tv. Just finished watching the entire series on Stan, and they did the right thing wrapping it up. Uptight wife, self-absorbed husband, narcissitic mother, racist/homophobic father, whimpering brother, and convenience-kids. Over and over until the last season or two just became them screaming at each other, 'hilariously', with 'hilarious' racism and homophobia running down through the generations.
I stopped watching tv nine years ago, and watch only two genres of movies, and those but rarely. No more angst over all the stupidity.
Seriously, they shortened the list by one? Why? Why make me load another page to see which other show was originally listed?

"Tiger King" should be on there. I'm SO over it and the fact that Netflix had so much success with it that another season, is coming is nauseating. If I never heard the names Carol Baskin or Joe Exotic again, it'll be too soon.

The Handmaid's Tale. First series was amazing, second series good, then 'what on earth is she doing' - clearly spinning it out for a third season and realised I was being played and haven't really started the fourth.
Stranger Things, BUT only Season 3. Season 1 and 2 were amazing but Season 3 honestly sucked and I don’t know why it gets the praise it does.

You can ALL the reality shows, AGT and the like. Don't forget too, these shows have fake followings for ratings purposes, or after market sales.
Casually the most are American series. Sorry, there's more under the sun than the very same thing with trashy actors
One of the reasons these shows get so overrated is the marketing. The producers & networks have signed on a bunch of advertisers to get the $ to make the show. So they crank up the media machine & convince the viewing public that "this is the hot new show to watch, everyone's gonna be watching it, so don't get left out".
IMO American Horror Story....I loved the first season and every other season has just paled in comparison (I know people who love other seasons more though)

Load More Replies... "Tiger King" should be on there. I'm SO over it and the fact that Netflix had so much success with it that another season, is coming is nauseating. If I never heard the names Carol Baskin or Joe Exotic again, it'll be too soon.
Just because you didn't like thw ending of the show, doesn't mean the show didn't deserve the appreciation
The Handmaid's Tale. First series was amazing, second series good, then 'what on earth is she doing' - clearly spinning it out for a third season and realised I was being played and haven't really started the fourth.
Stranger Things, BUT only Season 3. Season 1 and 2 were amazing but Season 3 honestly sucked and I don’t know why it gets the praise it does.
Too many had no discussion of what was good/bad. Anyone can list a tv show
So every program that people watch is subjective to criticism and opinion. Crazy, never saw that coming.

Okay then, I have bad taste in shows and series because most of the ones I saw I this list, I like them a lot. Any suggestions of good shows and series.?

I stopped reading after 3. This list is a bunch of very popular things people don't like. It liking a popular thing is valid, but it doesn't make you interesting, special, or correct
You can ALL the reality shows, AGT and the like. Don't forget too, these shows have fake followings for ratings purposes, or after market sales.
Casually the most are American series. Sorry, there's more under the sun than the very same thing with trashy actors
One of the reasons these shows get so overrated is the marketing. The producers & networks have signed on a bunch of advertisers to get the $ to make the show. So they crank up the media machine & convince the viewing public that "this is the hot new show to watch, everyone's gonna be watching it, so don't get left out".
IMO American Horror Story....I loved the first season and every other season has just paled in comparison (I know people who love other seasons more though)

Nah, I like it a lot but the title of thread kind of warns you that shows you may consider to be a masterpiece is not going to liked by someone else. Really not worth getting upset about.
