Our Warrior Cat Shuri Has A Baby Brother Now, Another Black Kitten That Was In Desperate Need Of Rescue

Hey everyone, we have some news to share with you! We wrote a few months ago an article on Bored Panda about our cat Shuri, the adopted kitten that was Fighting for her life, that now she’s full of life and half the size of a normal cat. Now she has an adopted little brother.

His name is James, he is also a black cat and he is a rescue. We think he is about 2-3 months old and he has a very strong personality. We went to a wedding in a different city, about 350 km away from home, the wedding venue was inside a park at the outskirts of town. During the wedding party we heard people talking about a kitten the kids we’re playing outside but didn’t give it much attention. At the end of the party, we went outside for some fresh air and saw something moving near the parked cars. That’s when we found him. To our surprise, the kitten was also black, just like Shuri. Bouth of us have a weakness for black cats, that is the reason we adopted Shuri, we wanted a black cat, knowing that black cats are the last ones to get adopted. It probably was fate, if you believe in that. I picked him up in my arms, he instantly fell asleep. We started to look around to see if we could find his mother or other siblings. After looking for about 30 minutes we gave up, we talked with some of the other guests and found out that no one saw any other cats except him, they tried to feed him some meat but he didn’t eat it. I could feel all his bones pointing, his spine and legs, he was incredibly skinny. So we had to make a decision, we could just leave him there to survive on his own or we could take him with us. On one hand it was an easy decision, I am a softie and my husband loves me too much to say no to me, one the other hand, we we’re scared about bringing another cat home, Shuri’s interactions with other cats we’re not encouraging. But we took a chance and hoped it will work out.

So another cat adventure begins for us. We went with the kitten in my arms to find a store that was opened at 2 am. to buy him food and to improvise a litter box. Once we got to the hotel, he woke up, he was all purrs. He ate and played for a bit with us. After that he slept like a baby till the morning. The next day he stayed all day in the hotel room, mostly sleeping, the poor thing was probably exhausted. That evening there was a terrible storm in town and we were even more sure about our decision to take the kitten with us. He probably wouldn’t have made it through the storm.

He was a very good boy during the 7 hour trip back home.

One of the first thing we did when we got back in town was to take him to our amazing vet team to make sure he was ok. He was covered in fleas and he was too little for any other medication, so they gave him a bath to kill them. He also has some other minor issues, an ear infection and a possible herpes virus infection. He was dewormed and we are waiting for him to reach 1 kg (2.2 pounds) so he can be vaccinated – he weighed 0.5 kg (1.1 pounds) when we found him.

We came back home with him, fearing all the way the reaction Shuri would have. I have to admit, she was not very welcoming, she hissed him and ran away.

The first few days he needed some treatment so he came with me to the office

The first 2 weeks were a bit difficult, they weren’t best friends but it’s better than what we expected. We can say Shuri tolerated him, there was some occasional fighting, some occasional hissing.

After 2 weeks I think she got used to the idea of him being around, the accepted the fact that this wasn’t temporary. She started to get closer to him, she started to show some affection toward him. Now they have some moments where James will go to her and she will start grooming him. This leads to James wanting to play with her. The biggest problem I think is that he does not know how to show his love, he likes to chew on everybody, including us and Shuri is not happy about that. But hopefully we will adjust and eventually learn to love each other.

Big Tummy James

He is doing amazing, he doubled his weight in just 3 weeks, he is very playful and has adapted very well to being an indoor cat.

His big tummy is caused by how much he eats. We think that because he was abandoned on the streets, not knowing when his next meal will be, he is desperate to eat as much as he can. We hope he will understand that he is safe now and he will never starve again.

He was very lucky that we had all the previous experience with Shuri. He also is infected with herpes virus but we observed the symptoms much sooner and he got the right treatment before it got worse.

Shuri is also doing well. She’s grown a bit more the last months, she looks like a normal cat now, she weighs 3,8 kg now (8 pounds). Until now we had no major health scares with her, we hope she will be fine and that all her problems are in the past.

Some “Shuri” time

She spends a lot of time in her hiding spots – the tallest places in the house she can climb, where James won’t bother her.

Together

They do share some quiet moments together but most of the times they run around the house, chasing each other. They especially like doing that at 5 am.

She’s still our spoiled Princess

We are trying to give Shuri as much affection and cuddles as we can, so she does not feel neglected or replaced. She was a bit skittish the first few weeks with James but now she is a bit more relaxed around all of us. She hides less and she comes in for kissed and cuddles, like she used to before James.

Big Sister Shuri

We are amazed by her, she reacted much better than expected and since then she made lot of progress in accepting James. Shuri is the best cat we could ever hope for. She’s a big sister now and she has accepted that role ease.

Relaxed James

We hope James will start to show her the same love. He is still not sure how to show his affection, he still jumps on her and bites her. He is probably just being playful, and that this will pass once he is older. But he is a very good boy when he wants to be groomed by Shuri.
