Every once in a while, animals surprise us by forming unlikely friendships. Today, let’s add one more unusual companionship to the list.
This adorable otter that you can see in the pictures below is Sakura, who lives in Japan together with her owners and a kitten, Mochi.

The otter also has a popular YouTube channel with 563k subscribers where the owners post all kinds of videos documenting Sakura and Mochi’s (adorable) daily life. One of the most popular videos on the channel that has recently gone viral on the interwebs captures the otter and the kitten cuddling with each other before going to sleep.

Otters belong in the wild, together with their own family and pack. This one is desperately searching for the close contact s/he'd otherwise have with the other members of the pack. This is neither cute nor adorable but just sad. Please do not promote this kind of animal abuse here. These photos ought to be deleted.
I agree. Keeping an "introverted" wild animal as a pet is one thing, but keeping a social animal is cruel. It is psychological abuse to pry a social creature away from its family. The only exception is if it is a rescue animal for some reason (e.g. baby otter rescued when family died)

As cute as it looks I feel terrible for that otter that will never feel the joy of swimming and playing with other otters. I know that the selfishness of humans has no boundaries, but it still makes me sad to see examples.

The otter is cute, but otters are not pets. They require access to large areas and water to thrive. This is not ok!

Agreed, but the blind wants to remain blind and so the deaf....wild otters are being poached from the wild to become pets. Yet people seeing videos like this believe the animal is a rescue and is cute. The illegal cruel otter trade in Asia where people pay thousand of dollars is growing because people believe wild animals are cute pets.

Sad video that is trying to appear cute on the surface. Wonder if people know how recently in Asia pet ownership of Otters have exploded.....how the baby otters get to be available for purchase? Their parents are killed so the babies can be poached and sold as the adorable pet people want to have at home. Many die in transit, are discarded when the owners can't manage a wild animal, get sick, or don't make it at the care of humans....how sick and cruel is the process, snatching wild creatures to fulfill the selfish human desires. Otters belong to the wild they don't need to be adopted. Human kind is always at the center of the most inhumane cruel acts. As social creatures Otters look for companionship....yeah what a cute video with a trail of evil behind it. how do you know the otter hadnt been rescued and could not be released back into the wild(ok maybe it said it somewhere---i tend not to read but just look at the pictures)---but i know people here who have rescued a fawn and some squirrels---they cud not of been released or they would of died---so the people rather kindly accepted responsibility for them
It was kind of cute until I noticed that they had them declawed. Declawing isn’t getting rid of the nail, it’s chopping off the entire tip of their toes. Also otters have webbed feet that help them swim better, was that skin cut off along with half of the toes?
She's not declawed (thank goodness)- she's an Asian small clawed otter so their nails are very small and they don't have much webbing.

I agree, an otter is a wild animal who belongs with its own kind. It will never know the joy of swimming in open water, or running free, and having a family of it's own. On the other hand it will never go hungry, and will always be safe and warm. Cute pictures though.
All those commenting that this otter should be in the wild. You don't know the circumstances as to why or how the otter came to live with this couple. Maybe she can't be a wild otter for some reason, maybe she is a rescue of some kind. Stop hating, she is obviously happy where she is. It is only cruel if the animal is being treated cruelly, which obviously she is not. Just enjoy the love these two share.
Most otters are purchased as pets not rescues, please research the black market going on and you will SEE and READ the evil behind it. Go to www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/2019/01/wild-otters-popular-exotic-pets/. No one is hating here but people who wants to preserve wild life gets upset. Ignorance, lack of education, selfishness you name it doesn't justify believing is ok to try to domesticate wild animals and keeping them. Ask your local zoo or sanctuary if they would turn away an otter found hurt they will tell you no they will try to rehabilitate and return to the wild where they belong. No one is saying this is abuse, but is wrong to promote this as a normal situation. The poaching of wild life is a lucrative business fueled by greedy humans that is hurting and destroying the eco-systems.
