One Sheet of Paper

We already had a post of Weird Toilet Paper Roll Art, showing Yuken Teruya’s beautiful cutouts of toilet paper rolls, and now I present another super creative artist, Peter Callesen. He’s a contemporary artist who does a similar kind of papercraft, but this time out of single A4 paper sheets. His 3D paper models are incredibly beautiful and have been described as “museum-worthy”, which explains why he’s been featured in galleries around the world. Influenced by kirigami (a variation of origami paper folding), Peter uses an X-acto knife to carefully cut the paper and then fold it into various shapes.

“Lately I have worked almost exclusively with white sheets of paper in different objects, paper cuts, paper folding, installations, and performances,” said Peter on his website. “A large part of my paper art is made from A4 sheets. It is probably the most common and consumed art medium used today. This is why we rarely notice the actual materiality of the A4 paper.”

Peter also explained the approach he takes in creating his minimalist art: “By taking away all the information and starting from scratch using the blank white A4 paper sheet for my creations, I feel I have found a material that we are all able to relate to, and at the same time, the A4 paper sheet is neutral and open to fill with a different meaning. The thin white paper gives the paper art designs frailty that underlines the tragic and romantic theme of my works.”

I would have never thought that one could make such cool art using just one sheet of paper! His unique pieces of sculpture art are also quite technical to make, so a steady hand and a lot of patience are definitely required. His papercraft ideas are pretty inspiring and show that even blank paper can hold so much creativity. On the other hand, there’s an artist in Germany who can create unique art without any paint or pencil just by folding paper, see Incredible Folded Paper Art by Simon Schubert.
