The image of a perfect woman in the 1950s is familiar to all of us – a diligent wife, slaving around the house all day, preparing delicious meals for her hardworking husband, taking care of the children, and all that with a smile, of course. This image was reflected a lot in the ads of that era too. Inspired by them, photographer and video editor from Beirut, Lebanon, Eli Rezkallah created a series called “In A Parallel Universe” where he switched up the gender roles portrayed in those ads to reveal the absurdity of such stereotypes with humor.

“Last Thanksgiving, I overheard my uncles talk about how women are better off cooking, taking care of the kitchen, and fulfilling “their womanly duties,” Rezkallah writes on his website. “Although I know that not all men are like my uncles and think that way, I was surprised to learn that some still do, so I went on to imagine a parallel universe, where roles are inverted and men are given a taste of their own sexist poison.”

either way it's not ok. but people seem to be ok when the role are reverse and it's the men who are in that situation. people find it funny.

Damn, these are really sexist ads. I had never seen them. Glad to see things changed for good.

That is a damn fine machine, I would be totally chuffed if someone was thoughtful enough to buy me a good tool for the house (actually I already have a great vacuum but who does not want a hoover?).

as a man who loves to vacuum, and who possesses adult-sized onesie would be tickled pink to get a vacuum brand new under the tree on Christmas

Haha I think they would be more funny if they leave the man in theis "man attires" and look, not a girly looking boy IMO.

Christmas morning she'll/he'll be happier with a divorce (because of course, women and men love to be told to work) (sarcasm)

You'd be pretty happy too if you had been trying to clean carpets by hand for years!

I'd be probably only one happy about a new hoover in our household

My husband does all the cleaning- mainly because I suck at it. If I got him a brand new Dyson he'd be just as giddy as this sexist ad.

Wait, what is sexist about getting a better working vacuum? Years ago my girlfriend and I picked one out together for a Christmas present from us to us. We loved getting something that actually worked even if we both picked it out and didn't wrap it.

These ads were from "back in the day". I remember a lot of them. Times were so different in the 50s and 60s. Not saying this was right, it was just how it was. I believe men and women should have equal rights, but I'm not sure we're going about it the right way.

Men have no issue with vacuuming. It`s a machine, it has a motor, it makes noise. It sucks and it blows. We like that ! Go watch Tim Allen`s standup on youtube :D

Women don't like practical gifts on holidays or her birthday. Especially her birthday. I imagine men are the same.

To be honest, who on earth gets a hoover as a Christmas gift (regardless of gender)? Even in the 1950s it wouldn't make any sense imo.

Have they changed? My father in law bought his wife a kitchen aid mixer for Christmas. She was not amused...or pleased.
