A tiny bit of communication - ask if they are OK - can you get them something from the shops - keep an eye out for them -- it can mean so damn much ,and cost so little

Especially on this site where so many of the posts seem to focus on petty passive-aggressive responses to situations where a simple word, delivered with a smile might have solved it without hard feelings.
Load More Replies...Nice story, my mother and I both love the game the Jumble in the newspaper. If one of us got up before the other we would do the game on a separated piece of paper. This went on until the day she died at 86. I still do the jumble every day and it reminds me of her.
I am sorry for your loss. I lost my stepfather.

I saw her sometimes walk our common way, pass our house to hers with full bags form the grocery, struggling. I went then with out to give her a hand, with the excuse I brought the garbage out. She passed almost 3 years ago. One time I came home from work, and saw my son, 9 years old, helping my other neighbor (son of the old lady) with his grocery bags. My son is a really annoying kid, loud, demanding, stubborn... But this day, I hid behind a tree, deeply touched and proud and waited until he went back in the house. I never told him that I saw him, but I know now he is not just annoying. He's a good kid :)
Awwwww, kids will usually show who they REALLY ARE when they're not being pushed to do so. They're usually especially nice to people who are outside the family, at least for a little while bc of a stage they go through, and it's very normal. If it continues for longer than a year, then I'd be concerned about it.:-)

This 100 year old resident was deaf - didnt hear the phone - didnt hear his doorbell. One time I had to enter his flat to ensure he was ok - he was quiet and unmoving in bed- i couldnt hear him breathing or see his chest moving. I gently touched his wrist - dont know who screamed loudest - me or him
he must have been so lonely...I'm so glad you gave all of that to him--not the crosswords so much as the attention, and listening to his stories.
He might a special agent in WW2. Solving crossword puzzles kept his mind running.
Here's something interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-Day_Daily_Telegraph_crossword_security_alarm He most likely knew that story

I can't imagine completing a crossword in 10 minutes, much less with the harmless guilt associated with appropriating my neighbour's paper under cover of darkness. You handled the whole situation with a genuinely high level of compassion. It really was nothing more than a head scratching victimless crime that became a real human bond. If only people would employ the vast resources of technology available to us to commit acts of decency like this instead of the disgusting things smartphones have wrought upon us instead.
Are you not sure? Would you like our opinions? May I ask what exactly your question is? No disrespect intended.

Oh, how adorable! He must've been such a sweet man, enjoying the little things.
Kindness is what it's all about. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your story of kindness and friendship.
This was so sweet. Based on the title of this article I was expecting some story about a pervy neighbor guy who set up camera in a girl's bedroom or something, but instead there was this sweet story. Thanks BP for making my day.
Aww c'mon man. Can you put a hormonal female warning at the top of these damn stories. I'm at work and I can't be crying at work.
...My heart...:'(...THIS IS SO DAM SWEET! We do need more people like him in this world.
I can't imagine the level of satisfaction the younger person would've felt..
This is the best story I've read in a long time, you are one hell of a guy
Absolute b******t. So it was easier for an 80 yo to get up at 5am and do crosswords outside standing up rather than just ordering the paper himself or buying a crossword book himself? Utter nonsense.
I hope that small gift brought an amazing amount of joy to this mans life and even more hopeful he was able to convey that to you!
That is the SWEETEST story!!! Thank you for sharing it! AND, bless your heart!
What an absolutely beautiful, touching and most poignant story. How very kind you are and how happy you made the last years of an elderly mans life, God Bless you, you are richly deserving of His many Blessings! What a wonderful person you are!!!
