Guy Gets A Higher Paying Job, Old Company Expects To Keep Him By Offering Less Money

If you’ve ever been in a position where you received a job offer from a company with better terms and pay, you know how much it would take for your old employer to keep you. This is where the counter offers come into play, and they surely have to be generous, showing how much your old management really values you.

But this is not what happened to Redditor VincentVegatheHorse, who has been waiting to finally leave his job due to “an overwhelming mountain of issues.” So imagine how ready he was to pack his stuff after finding “a new job at a pretty well known company with a significant pay bump and title change as well.”

Meanwhile, the management at the author’s old job was ready to ‘do everything’ in their eyes to keep him. But it turned out that their everything was not even remotely close to the bare minimum. “My manager asked if they could keep me and asked me to throw out a number,” the author wrote. Instead of making a solid counter offer, the manager saw it as an opportunity to bargain and this clearly didn’t sit well with the employee, who had one foot already set in a new company.

To find out what an expert had to say about this whole situation, Bored Panda reached out to Liz Ryan, a keynote speaker, multiple book author and the founder and CEO of Human Workplace. Her illuminating Twitter thread about fake job openings to get free employees has recently gone viral and you can read our post about it here.

“Sometimes the universe makes it easy for you to make a decision. This is one of those cases. Your current employer is telling you flat out that if you stay, they intend to continue treating you like dirt,” Liz commented on the incident.

“I don’t recommend that people accept a counter offer in any case, even when your current employer offers you more to stay than the other employer is offering you to leave and take a new job,” she added. “Why would you stay with a company that has already proven they don’t value your talents? And why would you go through the trouble of jobhunting only to get an offer, refuse that offer and stay with the employer who already mistreated you?”

Liz argues that “if you’re with a romantic partner that treats you so badly you decide to leave, would you turn around and stay with them just because they say “All right, if you’re serious about leaving I guess I’ll treat you slightly better than I have been treating you…?”

On this note, the founder of Human Workplace stated simply: “Take the other offer” and “leave the cheapskate manager behind.” Liz concluded that “Life is short. It’s your career. You get to make all the big decisions. Only the people that value you, deserve you!”

for years I would step in for no shows while already working another shift... so I would end up working two three sometimes even four locations at the same time. The company only ever paid me one hourly wage but they were billing for each location. after a year and a half with that company, I left and didn't look back. it's unbelievable what companies get away with. They need to start teaching kids in school to know their self-worth and to stand up to abusive employers...

I used to work 6 day weeks, did the work of three different department, and worked ALL of the public holidays... that stopped when my boss got mad at me for refusing to work for FREE on public holidays. He couldn't understand why I refused. That got me demoted, from a supervisory role to part time grunt. One thing I have learnt over the years is that despite what BS HR might spew, these companies don't give a damn about you, and that 99% of the people in management roles are entitled and out of touch idiots.

Try being a teacher. Crap pay and the clients are usually reluctant to their part. If you complain you're told hey you get summers off.

Never ever, ever cover 2 positions at once. You aren't just shorting yourself, you are shorting the person that should have been hired to do the job you are covering and reinforcing a bad practice that makes your coworkers lives worse. Companies only hire when they HAVE to hire. The best path to better work conditions is to unionize. The best year of the middle class 1940s through 1970s were also when 25%+ of private sector workers were unionized. Today it is 6%, and the middle class is all but gone. It's not a coincidence, you want to Make America Great Again? Join a Union.

Simple. If they ask if they can counter offer you tell them, only on the following conditions. If you want me to stay, double my current salary, put it in writing, and guarantee me a one-year employment contract with a 90-day mandatory notice of intent not to renew, with a 6-month severance package, then walk out, hang up, whatever. Do NOT tolerate any attempts to negotiate. That is your bottom line take it or leave it scenario. If they agree, enjoy the year and immediately start networking when the year is up, while simultaneously preparing an updated and improved (in your favor) employment contract extension.

Interesting. Make sure that you know labor laws. If you sense that the company you are with is breaking the law, they probably are.

I had a friend who had recommended me for a position at another company. They offered over a 30% increase in pay. I went to talk to my manager about leaving and he suggested a counter, a little more than the other company offered. I thought, great, I am cool with my team and the money was the only drive to leave. Then after I sign the paper, he says "Don't ever try to do this again". I left the company for the other, weeks later. My friend recommended me, I didn't go looking to force my current employer to jump my wage. This was just the start of wage increases I would have never gotten had I stayed. KNOW YOUR WORTH!

I left my old job 3 years ago and never looked back. It was $12 an hour and loved it till my promotion was due. Then they started playing games and asked me to wait a little longer. So I went job hunting and found a place that pays 3x what I was making and then after I left...1 month later asked if I would think of coming back...lol...that wasn't going to happen.

Quit my low paying crappy job of 9 years. Boss asks if she can do anything to get me to stay, I suggested a pay rise. No response. I walked and got a job at almost double my old wage for less hours. Suck it, shitty bosses!

At my current job I'm doing at least 5 different jobs at the same time for the same (minimal) salary. And plus comes the immaturity of my colleague who's actually double my age. Also my boss is a greedy mess. I'm sure if he sees 1 cent on the street he'll pick it up even if it's in a mud.

There doesn't seem to be anything unusual here. He found a company that will pay more and left a company that wasn't willing/able to pay as much. "Instead of countering, they asked if I could go lower." It's still negotiating, even if they don't give a firm counter offer. What's wrong with that? Just decline and move on.

I'm not entirely understanding that part, but I think he gave them the minimum he would consider, and instead of either giving him a proposal that is higher than that and seeing whether he'll accept, or saying "Sorry, can't do that, good luck at your new job" they tried to go lower than that. Despite them being the ones who tried to keep him on.

So. Let me get this straight. This moron asked for 35% more than what this new company offered and you think that you didn't push it? For f**k sake...I can't wait to see your fat ass on unemployment.

That's how bargaining works. When one side offers a certain amount, the other side has to offer a larger sum to win. And yes, human resources have a price, and yes, that price rises with time and experience. He won't get unemployed since he's going to a new job. The real moron here is you, who's going to be stuck at some lousy underpaid dead end job until your retirement, which is getting farther and farther away every year.
