This Dog That Spent 10 Years In A Shelter Due To His Missing Leg, Old Age And Blindness Finally Finds His Forever Home

There are many dogs out there who just don’t get the same treatment as others. Many of us love to see fluffy, cute, and healthy pups but turn away when we see an ill or old one. That’s why today we have this heartwarming story for you that is bound to change your mind.

Tofu was a 14-year-old dog that nobody wanted. He was saved from an abusive household by good Samaritans and spent 10 years living in a shelter. The poor pooch had cancer, so he had to get his back leg amputated. He also became blind from old age. Many shelter workers thought that he would live out his life in the shelter. Until Danila came along and gave Tofu a loving home and another chance at life.

The poor pup was probably about to spend the rest of his life in a shelter, but that was until Danila showed up in his life

“One fine day I woke up and called the coordinator of a shelter who was my friend, Carol, and asked which was the oldest dog that would be up for adoption. Immediately she sent me the photo of Tofu. Who was 14 years old, blind, and had recently amputated a paw because of cancer.”

Danila saw a photo of Tofu, heard his story, and immediately realized she had to have him in her life

“I always had a dream of adopting a handicapped, elderly, and deaf dog. Not necessarily all these problems in one dog. It would be a project in the future, where I would adopt one dog at a time.”

Danila already has five dogs, but after a long and serious discussion with her husband, they decided to give Tofu his forever home

“When I saw the photograph and learned its story, I couldn’t get Tofu out of my head. I spent the whole day thinking about it. It was inexplicable! I talked to my husband about the possibility of adopting him, as I have 5 more dogs at home.”

Danila had to wait a month for Tofu to get all the surgeries he needed and to recover from them

“After deciding to adopt him, I had to wait a month for him to recover from the leg amputation surgery and some other health problems he was being treated for. While I was waiting, he was already provided a collar, clothes, doghouse, and toys.”

Tofu adapted well to his home and soon didn’t bump into things anymore

“Tofu adapted very well to the new home, he learned to walk around the house without bumping into things or the wall. I believe that after being rescued from abuse and spending 10 years in a shelter, he can feel that something magical has happened in his life and that now he will be really happy.”

He is a happy and loved home dog now that has an amazing family

“Watching him sleeping in his bed and knowing he has a family now makes me absolutely fulfilled and happy”

“I sometimes look at him and wonder how someone could treat him badly in the past, as he is an extremely strong, gentle, and loving dog. Whoever did this really doesn’t know what a wonderful dog they lost. It is a gift from God in our lives to have Tofu in our home.”

Sadly, many elderly and ill dogs don’t get chances like that

If you ever want to get a dog, please consider getting one from a shelter. Perhaps even think about giving a chance to other dogs like Tofu

“What most motivated me to adopt him was knowing that Tofu is a dog that nobody wants. Besides being old, he is blind and doesn’t have one of his legs. Certainly, most people would think that this dog will be too much work, and with that, the poor animal may never find a loving home.”

Any dog out there, no matter how old or healthy, is capable of giving immense amounts of love, care, and snuggles! Anyone would be lucky to have a dog like Tofu

I would have wanted and taken this lovely boy in a New York minute. I have what would be considered an elderly cat. After she is gone I will adopt an elderly shelter cat. If I were to get a young one they might out live me and then where do they go? I'd rather give an older cat a wonderful loving home for the rest of what will be their life. Yes, hard to let go, but I will have given them joy.

I adopted a 2yo Dalmatian who was deaf. Over the years she lost one eye, then the other, to glaucoma. She lived to be 13 and was the best dog I ever knew. I got her name tattooed on my arm.

I seriously admire people that take in older pets that have many health issues! I don't know if i would have the strength knowing they won't be around for long, but i really want to help elderly animals have a loving home in their senior years!!! Huge respect for her! I'm so happy for this doggo

I am the same Vicky. I know I would fall in love and not having much time together would break my heart but on the other hand, I would want to do this so that animal feels love when they leave this earth.

Older, shelter dogs often have the 1-up in life where you don't have to worry about having to put enormous amounts of effort potty training them, and they often know a lot of the standard commands like "sit", "down", stay", "night night/bed time", etc. They're not always strays that're rescued off the streets and are sometimes just in the shelter because their previous owners had passed away or just abandoned them due to a move or whatnot. They're often super affectionate and will love you just as much. Sincerely, A dog foster parent ☺️

Thank you for saving him! I wish I had the patience to do what you've done, along with the appropriate home to do it in.
