Most of Earth’s surface, 70 percent, to be exact, is covered by the ocean. There are a lot of secrets that these waters conceal as humans have managed to explore just 5 percent of what lies on its floor. The unknown is always frightening, so let's look at what we do know, as the deep waters are quite fascinating, although they can give us the creeps sometimes.

These facts were shared by curious Redditors whose minds were boggled when they learnt them, so Bored Panda collected the most intriguing ones in this list from threads you can find here, here and here. If you would like to learn more creepy facts about the ocean, you can read this article and you may also be interested in this one where divers and fishers share their scary experiences.

I just had to look them up, 250- 500 years life, their meat ( untreated) is toxic to humans which I would think contribute to their life span, the females can be pregnant from 8 - 18 years ( ouch) and they are non confrontational to humans . I'm in awe :o

23 Fascinating, Weird Or Even Scary Facts About The Ocean People In This Online Group Decided To Share The fact that the famous picture of the blobfish is not actually what a blobfish looks like. When scientists first found them, they did not know that the blobfish is not as resilient as other deep sea creatures, and That particular blobfish was pulled to the surface too quickly, and had its skin and flesh torn off from the immense force of rapid decompression. The blobfish in that photo has its skin torn off. What’s even worse, is that companies have made t shirts and even squishies entirely based off of this photo. It still chills me to this day.

They technically don't age, and they will be as active at 70 years old as they were at 5 years old. They will only die from not being able to molt properly anymore.

"No. 1: Saltstraumen in Nordland County, Norway, about 6.2 miles southeast of Bodo Town. Whirlpools of up to 33 feet in diameter and 16 feet in depth are often formed in the area when the currents are strongest. No. 2: Moskstraumen is one of the strongest whirlpools in the world. It is also a system tidal eddies that form on the Norwegian Sea, between the Lofoten Point of Moskenes and Vaeroy on Mosken Island. The whirlpool is formed when the strong tidal current flow between the islands and the Atlantic Ocean and the deep Vestfjorden. The largest whirlpool has a diameter of 130 to 160 feet and induces a surface water ripple of up to 3 feet. Moskstraumen result from several factors such as tides, strong winds, the position of the Lofotodden, and the topography of the underwater." https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-world-s-largest-whirlpools.html

23 Fascinating, Weird Or Even Scary Facts About The Ocean People In This Online Group Decided To Share The concept of "Shark Spotters" is common where I live. People stand at a vantage point above popular beaches and look for sharks in the water to help ensure the safety of beach-go'ers.

However, underwater sensors have shown us (well, shark biologists) that WAY MORE sharks swim very close to the beach than shark spotters can see.

People really have no idea how many sharks they've probably encountered - that being said, very few sharks are actually dangerous to humans.

The summer after 7th grade, a kid in my class was surfing and fell off his surf board, and kicked a shark in the face. The shark bit his leg (out of surprise apparently) and then swam away really fast. He showed off that giant bite mark on his leg for the whole year when we came back to school.

23 Fascinating, Weird Or Even Scary Facts About The Ocean People In This Online Group Decided To Share The deep sea is the largest museum on Earth: There are more artifacts and remnants of history in the ocean than in all of the world’s museums, combined.

We have only explored less than 5 percent of the Earth’s oceans. In fact, we have better maps of Mars than we do of the ocean floor (even the submerged half of the United States).

Even if all sun were blocked off from the surface of the earth, these ecosystems would continue until the core of the earth cools enough (as the different physical processes that generate the heat will end) that these vents will no longer form.
