“What do you do?” is that one little question we all hear on a daily basis. But sometimes it doesn’t end just there. It’s not just about “what?” but also about “but really, what is it like to do your job?” And that’s the point we step over the small talk and get into explaining the complexities of our professions.
What’s interesting is that even the most no-brainer things about our jobs are often far from obvious to the general audience. This thread from Ask Reddit is a great example of it: “What's something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public doesn't fully understand?” someone asked, and the illuminating responses started rolling in.

Doctors/healthcare workers use dark humour as a form of resilience not to be callous or flippant.
A lot of traumatic events occur in a hospital on a daily basis. Sometimes a dark joke is the difference between breaking down emotionally or being able to compartmentalise and treat you with all our wits about us.
Nuclear engineer here, and if you think radiation is the devil incarnate then buckle in for a quick second as I tell you that:
1) No one from Fukushima died from radiation exposure. You saw pictures of the horrific devastation from the earthquake and tsunami. Flooding a nuclear plant doesn't topple buildings.
2) Nuclear is one of the safest, renewable, and cleanest energy sources that exist. Second cleanest only to water (and air if you count that).
3) Unless we start growing energy and picking it off the vine, oil and coal will run out in the very foreseeable future and nuclear is the way to go.
4) You get more radiation from eating a banana than anyone ever did from 3 Mile Island. The most radiation I get everyday is from my morning fruit and I play with radioactive sources and crystals all day.
5) Nuclear is actually really cool and by making it to the bottom of the list you're pretty cool too.

Curious that he only mentioned Fukushima and Three Mile Island and not, I don't know, one of the biggest nuclear disasters in history. No, flooding a nuclear power plant won't topple buildings, but exploding one certainly might. Nuclear is definitely a comparatively clean fuel, if you are only considering the period being used for energy production. There are still waste products involved that are definitely dirtier than wind, solar, wave, etc. And when it does go wrong (and anyone who thinks that's an unlikely possibly has been living under a rock or on an atoll somewhere) it *really* goes wrong. With a lot of regulations, it's safe - goddess help us if we get some idiot in charge who doesn't believe in regulations...
Libraries are not [vanishing]. The main reason we're suffering is because idiots decide, without doing any research, that libraries are [vanishing], so they cut funding because...why fund something that's dying? It's so circular that it makes my head hurt.
As a plumber replying to my customer who just hovered over me during the whole repair:
Yes, you could have done this yourself.
Yes, you would have saved 100s of dollars.
No, I can't come down on the price because of how simple it looked to you. We are a business and I gave you the quote before I started.

Graphic Designer here (but this applies to a lot of creative professions). Doing a job faster actually means I need to be paid *more*, not less.
When you're in a hospital, not every man is a doctor and not every woman is a nurse.
Wind farms require environmental impact studies that take birds in account. Yes, they do have an impact, but so does the playground in front of your house.
And trust me, if we don't put wind farms up and keep burning coal, it's gonna be worse, even for the birds.
Organically grown produce is still grown using pesticides. I stopped arguing with people when I realized the fact that I worked for the EPA and it was literally my job didn't dissuade them from arguing with me.
Unless it's an actual emergency you'll have to wait in the ER. It sucks, we know, but a suspected heart attack will be treated before a busted knee.
The other thing is your definition of emergency is different to mine. While clearly a suspected heart attack is more important than a broken ankle, the drunk guy with blood pouring down his face getting seen ahead of "maybe appendicitis, maybe gallstones, may even just be gas", because blood, is a level of triage that just won't make sense to many people.
Blood pouring down his face will see you immediately as head traumas are serious. But most people will see a drink guy, who is less needy than their broken ankle, or stomach aches. Concussions can be deadly. Appendicitis, gallstones, will be seen, but generally you are waiting to be sent to scans. Also really important to point out a doctor who can deal with brain bleeds, concussions, might not be able to fix your internal organs or broken bones as they have specialised into different area. I was in hospital for six hours with rectal bleed that didn't have a reason, I got checked by nurses, emergency staff, I was made comfortable because I had to wait for a doctor who specialises in colorectal surgery. Your appendicitis is serious, but you won't want to send in a surgeon who has no experience with that area. In Ireland there's only handful of colorectal surgeons. Unfortunate thing is a lot of people think a doctor does everything, but in reality they must be trained in that area

You obviously don't have chronic pain. When that chronic pain is at its "normal everyday" level no problem, but when it ramps up for whatever reason we need extra help and we need it now, not Monday

When I was 11 I was hit by a motorcycle, flew about 5 or 6 meters and fell head first on the asphalt. Went to the ER and waited more than 6 hours. My mom was furious and I kept dozing off but she forced me to stay awake. It was hell but at the end I was luckily just very bruised (the left side of my hip and thigh were dark purple, too bad I didn't have a camera phone back then, the colors on the weeks following the accident were beautiful), sore and had one humongous bump on my head. I don't know if they realized I was going to be fine or if it was luck.
Unless it's an actual emergency, you shouldn't even be IN A&E. Buy Lemsip for your sniffles and f**k off home.
Right now, urgent care or your doctor’s office won’t even let you into the building if you have sniffles aka suspected of having Covid. They send you to emerg and right now, some people are dying of those sniffles.

True story: Patient 1 came in coughing bloody fluid. Patient 2 came in needing stitches. Patient 3 came in unconscious, cyanotic, and seizing. Who goes first? Number 3, then 1, and I'm sorry, 2, but it's stitches, if it's not an arterial spray, you come third. But you will be ahead of patient 4, "My knee hurts".
Same applies by coming in an ambulance, just because you come by ambulance doesn’t mean you get the golden ticket through the door. We get lots of people who call an ambulance just because they think they can get in faster but end up tying up needed emergency services.
Been an EMT for 25+ years, and no…people STILL think asking an ambulance gets them seen faster or means they won’t be put in the waiting room.

Don't complain about waiting in the ER. It means you're going to live. Those people who get rushed to a room or into the OR might not be so fortunate...
When I got set on fire I didn’t realise how bad it was, then I remember going into the ER no triage and straight through the door and I was like ‘coool, I’m first’ - still unaware of my injuries 😂
And please don't use the ER as your personal doctor's office! Urgent care and walk in clinics are there for a reason. I was at the ER this weekend and about 50% of the people there didn't need to be. I was sitting by the triage station so I heard the reasons people came in. At least half of them were issues easily treated at urgent care (and yes there are 100s of them in my area). Why you would go to the hospital with a cold, UTI, or a kid with a simple cough is beyond me. I definitely would have gone somewhere else if I could have. It's no wonder people with actual serious medical conditions are dying before getting seen. What an abuse of the system.

I was just in the hospital with symptoms like that and a girl came in after me, told the receptionist she couldn’t breath and she was angry when they asked her to fill out a form that took me only 5 minutes. When she went back up to reiterate that she couldn’t breath, the receptionist said “Well, you seem to be able to talk.” As a former lifeguard, if they’re talking, they’re not in eminent danger. She was just having bad allergies, by the way, and was angry others showed up ahead of her and were taken in order.
When I went to the ER saying I couldn't breathe they took me right back. Could talk. I was having an asthma attack caused by an allergic reaction.

I felt this a couple weeks ago while passing a kidney stone, although it was weird how long the wait was since the nurse who did a precheck guessed it may be appendicitis. Waiting for an hour while passing a kidney stone thinking you may have appendicitis isn't a comfortable experience

this is a big problem, as what seems to be minor could be major. Lots of people have subsequently died because they weren't treated fast enough, and instead had to wait for hours
If doctors aren't available there's not much that can be done. It's similar to triage and any deaths that happen because a doctor didn't get to someone in time are unfortunate, but they happen.

Why do people go to ER with a sore finger, minor sprain etc? Go to your local GP and stop trying to get free treatment at the hospital. New Zealand here, and yes, hospital care is free.

I've spent a lot of time in the ER. Mostly I came in by ambulance because it was that serious. A couple of times I was a walk-in, but only once was I taken at once. Probably due to the blood pouring down my face....
life and limb means if you are likely to lose your life or risk amputation because of a delay they will not delay - but if you have a very uncomfortable stye, non-perforating gastritis, a broken bone that has not punctured the skin, not matter how much it hurts, you ain't going first if a myocardial infarction or a GSW shows up...
as a Dr in the ER, once, after taking care of like 12 peolple involved in a bus accident, the guy who was waiting for 2-3 hours (for a sore throat) told me in a very aggresive manner: "people must be dying to be seen by a doctor here", and i replied "you´re really smart, you got it right"
I know someone who got some small burns - 5 or 6 - on her hand, and they looked bad to her. So she went to the hospital where there was a burn unit, to the ER, and they told her there would be an 8 hour wait! She went home, put her hand in cold water, and put some ointment on and light gauze. Which she could have done in the first place, but everything is a BFD to her.

Hate going to ER main. County ER has gotten just as bad. They all treat you like your drug seeking or should of waited for your GP to get to you in 2 weeks.
Went to the hospital by ambulance once. Paramedics didn’t think I was very sick, but once there a few tests showed I was in kidney failure from sepsis. I was there for a while.
If you are not super lucky. I ended up in the ER right before christmas. The lady at the receptiondesk took 1 look at my bandaged hand and told me to march right to the ward for hand surgery. I had cut myself and needed a couple of stiches. My local healthcenter didn't have time to do it, so they sent me to the hospital.
I think most people understand this other than a few entitled people. Just wish theyd give me painkillers faster when im in acute pain (sorry ER nurse but paracetamol does nothing)
Most A&E units have a Triage Nurse whose job is to asses patients when they come in and make sure that those in the most urgent need of medical attention get treated first. They also direct those who do not need urgent care to other more appropriate departments such as a minor injuries unit or the hospital's GP clinic.
I took my daughter to the E.R years ago, when she was very little. She had a fever of 104.3, which made her at risk for brain damage! They made us wait 3 hours. When the doctor came in, he said he almost LAUGHED us out of the hospital, because my daughter looked "too cheerful" to be sick. The next day she broke out in a full body rash. She had Roseola, and one of the actual symptoms listed for it, is being "unusually cheerful for being sick".
Haha, when my mom called me at 9pm and wanted to go to the er for hurting her knee, I told her we'd be there all night. "No, I've been there before and I got right in" (it was 10am on a Tuesday) I reluctantly took her (after working a 10 hour shift, and another set for the next day) and sure enough, 11 hours, an xray, and a Tylenol later.... Love you mom :]
I was having a miscarriage in the ER that could've been stopped but the guy in front of me with a broken finger got taken first and I almost bled out in the ER. I lost the lawsuit.
It's also important to understand that "emergency care" does have different meanings. It can mean anything from emergency surgery to just observation.
I understand this but I had to wait 6 hours with gastritis and it freakin hurt. (Don’t downvote me im not saying my is more important)
Oh and the extra 3 hours waiting after they put the i v in just to see a doctor sucked (I went at 6 pm and didn’t come home till 3 just to go back and stay for a week)

Thank you for judging someone like my mother, whose low O2 was being caused by a non-STEMI heart attack. If she'd been left to wait, she risked death. Your husband risked puking and possible pancreas damage. So, based on such information, yes, someone who isn't getting enough oxygen will be triaged ahead of puking. Puking-no-blood does not come ahead of low O2. I'm sorry, and I nkow ---- my dad had pancreatic issues, he spent a lot of time puking in ER waiting rooms ---- but htat's the deal. As someone in the movie/tv business, most people don't realize that doctoring and altering footage is really really really easy for someone with the right software. I see my old relatives falling for obviously fake footage all the time because they trust all video to be real.
This problem is only going to get worse as the software gets better.
And its getting easier and easier all the time, like products for general public is getting closer to very convincing deep fakes, I think I even read/saw somewhere about rendering face swap deep fake on live video, so throw in bit voice modulating and I could example fake live statement impersonating our president.
As your child's teacher, I see them for 53 minutes a day for 180 days of the year. I cannot undo all of the poor habits you've taught/enabled/encourage and "make" your kid successful. I see people post on the book of faces about their child's [lousy] teacher because they won't do "x" or "y" when those things are the responsibility of the parent. Also, my contract says I work until 3. I will not call, text, or meet with you after hours because I need to have my own life separate from my work life which is really hard for parents to understand for some reason.

1) If you can't prove you are allowed to have access to a room, I can't give you keys to the room. That means if you're staying in your brother's room and you get locked out, you're SOL until your brother shows up with his ID. This is to protect you, your family, and your stuff. If you don't like it, you can go suck a lemon.
2) If you call and ask for a person, but don't have their name *and* room number, I can't just say "YUP HERE YA GO" because some people in the hotel might specifically hiding out from someone. I don't know you're not some stalker or jealous ex-lover trying to track a person down by calling every hotel in town and saying "Hey can you transfer me to Jane Smith's room, please?" I have no way of knowing you aren't some phone scammer calling every hotel in town and asking to be connected to random room numbers.
2.5) Even if the name you give me is not a guest at my hotel, I'll still tell you "I'm sorry, I can't acknowledge whether or not someone is here unless you give me name *and* room number." Sorry, Sherlock Holmes, the fact I'm stonewalling you right now doesn't mean that person is staying here. Nice detective work, though.
3) Obviously you can't leave your dog in the room and go out for the day. You're thinking of a kennel. Dogs left alone in strange places howl and bark and p**s and chew up the furniture and dig at the carpet. "But my dog doesn't bark when I'm gone." How the f**k would you know? I've been told that by so many people who are then shocked to learn their dog barked while they were gone.
4) Yes, you need a card for incidentals. No, I don't care if you tell me there aren't going to be any incidentals, I still need the card.
5) Emotional support animals are not service animals and we will charge you full price for them. You can't sue us for it, so if you threaten to we'll just write notes about you and laugh behind your back.
6) Vaping in your hotel room can set off the smoke alarm.

I was told that live in a 'plus' society. We always expect a doctor to give us something and feel cheated if he actually takes something away - like give up your daily donuts and chocolate or you'll keep on having heart attacks. Electricity is dangerous. Yeah getting shocked by an outlet is nothing more then a quick scare when you're dry. But when you're wet it's almost certain death (a painful one at that). And when you get into some larger stuff it will literally vaporize you. If you're untrained, you should leave electrical work to the professionals.
Writing code is not really that exciting to watch. It is very unlikely that you will have a lot of cool graphics or special effects on the screen.

I’ve tested around 45 people for ADHD in the past few years and literally 3 actually met criteria for it. Most peoples’ attention issues are due to depression and anxiety.

Please check your alarm systems keypad to see if there is a trouble on it BEFORE you call your alarm company and scream at them because your smoke detector is beeping. 7 out of 10 times the culprit is either a store bought battery operated smoke or a high voltage smoke that is tied to your homes electricity. Of course, if you don't show, we will charge the no-show fee to the credit card on file without you there.

Universal Healthcare and Medicare-for-All aren’t the same thing. Universal Healthcare means everyone is covered by some type of coverage-whether it be private or govt. Medicare for all, means everyone has Medicare. You can argue for one or the other. I just wanted to point out that the concepts are not synonyms.
