NYC Pharmacy Charges 7% “Man Tax” To Send A Powerful Message
40Kviews
According to a study conducted by the NYC consumer affairs department, women’s products cost 7% more than men’s. Well now a chemist in New York City has decided to combat this discrepancy by adding a 7% tax on all products purchased by men to make a statement about gender discrimination.
“We thought it’d be a great idea with all the political things going on—with Clinton being such a woman and the other guy and his womanizing,” Jolie Alony, owner of Thompson Chemists in SoHo, told the Daily Dot. “We wanted to share that women deserve to get a break, and men deserve to be charged 7 percent more. Women are spending more in general and we make less, so we deserve to have a break.”
Charging men and women different prices is actually a violation of New York’s pricing laws, so the chemist is paying the difference from their own pockets. The response has also been mixed, with some people supporting the idea and others branding it sexist. What do you think? (h/t: the daily dot)

what would happen? mens will go shop elsewhere.
how in the hell does this support equality?
To bring men and women awareness. Even though it's not the way I would usually prefer to take action, I'm getting so tired of today's society and it's unconscious losers that the "taste of your own medicine" technique is slowly becoming more appealing. If you don't like it, THEN CHANGE FASTER. It is not hard to understand how to behave! Men and women are different, yes, but neither of them are better than the other. Just because one can do something better does not mean the other shouldn't be given the opportunity to do the exact same thing. We're supposed to work together to solve problems, which would make life so much easier. IT'S. NOT. HARD.
This supports equality by bringing to light the reactions following this event. Because it's a tax against men, there's likely going to be a bigger fight against it by people. Maybe some threats of suing. Maybe some media coverage. The point is that it'll likely show how everyone will come out of the woodwork to support equality for men but not for women. Also. There might be some publicity stunt tucked under here where the owner might donate the extra tax stipends to a women's charity something something or other. Most businesses that do stuff like this usually donate the stupens generated income.
.....or not.
Women's products cost more because they are BETTER than Men's products! I'd love to see a woman use AXE shampoo for a week to see what it does to her well pampered hair!
WOW. just wow. that comment CLEARLY indicates your level of distortion of what equality is.
Kevin many women use men's products specifically because they are cheaper. Way to lump us all into one category.
Where's the problem then? Everybody can buy every product! If it's blue or pink who cares? This man tax really isn't a good idea...
Equality here is not the goal. The real goal at this store is "Egalitarianism", which is different. The former is 'before the fact' and the later is 'after the fact'. That's why this is taking place in New Yawk, Progressive capital of the United States.
It doesn't. The whole premise is false. Women don't make less money and the don't pay more for comparable products.
Dude they do make less money.
This is a horrible horrible way to make the point. Why should men "deserve" to pay more?? Women deserve to pay less -in other words equal to men - but that's not the same thing as charging men more!
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
they're not paying more - they're paying the going tax rate. Women are temporarily paying less for the products that they've long been overpaying for.
Why not lower the price of women's products? I agree with their point, but if I saw that sign I would probably go to another shop.
Yeah, right, fight sexism and inequality with sexism and inequality, that will surely send the message they intend to
"Women are spending more in general". That's an interesting statement. I do go crazy with all my makeup, trying new things, so I do spend much more in that area (so, at the pharmacy). Also, what does "with Clinton being such a woman" mean? It sounds like this pharmacy just hasn't thought their reasoning quite through. They might be doing this partly for exposure.
I'm pretty sure men pay the same thing as women for make-up, and women pay the same thing as men for couch syrup.
Male tampons are cheaper tho.
I quite agree. It is their wages and promotions we need to be looking at, Rather some item temporary discounts. However, this generates awareness and sparks interest.
Meh... Now guys will send their girls even to buy them medicine.... As groceries were not enough....
Interesting remark. But it hits the essence – you never know the "side effects".
Me and my husband go shopping together.. i feel deeply saddened by all the salty feminists that arent appreciative of love. it's "assault" or "rape" smh
This is stupid, and even the wrong sign if you prefer symbolism. Just a few concerns: a) why not raise men prices by 3,5% and lower women prices by 3,5% if you want to do something for your customers? b) Why punish those that buy and not those that sell? c) why not take into account that there might be a reason behind prices? For example, women might in general buy more sophisticated beauty products. Is that right or wrong? I do not know, but prices are just an effect then. d) How would you take into account actual spending patterns? If you strive for equality with simple, disconnected actions, it would be the next consequence to make women pay more in restaurants...because if couples go out more often the guy pays the bill. Let us not strive for gender equality but for equality of people, whatever their (biologial, social, psyhcological, ...) background is. And this is nothing that comes with rules, regulations, quotas or the like, but by abandoning old-fashioned thinking.
Basically I agree with your point, especially b), very well said! BUT... About c)... Well, contraception pills are no beauty products....
Kevin, yeah, they're not neccessary, but they do help me a big time with my pms.
In the UK contraceptive pills (not sure about implants, IUD etc) are completely free.
Agreed Daria. But I guess for this you need societal consensus. Where I life, contraception pills are paid by health insurance to a certain age – a good thing I guess.
Where I live, some are paid by insurance, but if you don't apply, they can be costly. Thw better ones. So I go for the "cheap" option of 8 to 10 USD per month (8000 ~ 10000 KRW).
You can take turns buying condoms you know. Pills are not NECESSARY, only easier.
Excuse me, but this is ridiculous. Allow me to answer you point by point. a) That's a nice suggestion. Not a real concern with the actual problem at hand, but it could've been good for the pharmacy. Bet no one thought of it. b) Because it is rather impossible to punish those that sell. Also see below, on "punishing". c) Eh, nope? It doesn't have much to do with women preferring more soohisticated beauty products. Of course, a lot of women enjoy, or are pressured into, spending a lot on makeup, skin care, and similar products, but the "woman tax" is a different matter. It's the same razor, but with a "for her" on the plastic cover, that costs much more than another marketed to men. It's shampoo being more expensive if it's for women. That is what the pharmacy tried to parody here. The same product, treated differently on basis of gender. d) Couples can only go out so often, and the dates will probably stop being paid by the man after marriage. On the other hand (cont.)
Marketing and pricing does differ by gender, but that's more to do with capitalism and economics. Many beauty products are "inelastic", meaning that when the price of a product increases, demand doesn't. Most men don't care about what shampoo they use, but many women do. The companies know this and raise prices. I'm sure the same can be said for labels on fashionable clothes, flashy male-oriented sports cars, etc.
Hi Nini, thank you for the response. To answer to these product question: I guess product prices are a result of capitalism...supply and demand. Why is the same product, let's say a face cream, more expensive if it contains a woman-themen perfume than with a man-themed? I do not think because of sexism, but because it is bought at that price. Why that is the case I cannot tell, but I am sure that you can change this with your purchasing behaviour.
(Cont.) Women will mever stop needing many products men won't ever pay for - bras, pads, tampons, and other staples that yes, are expensive even though necessary. A restaurant bill is a nice check that MOSTLY gets paid by the guy, while he's courting, a few times maybe. A woman pays more on a daily basis for simple things. If you wanna take the restaurant date example, the man is going to maybe (not certainly) pay for the check, or most of it. The woman will spend money on becoming pretty for the man. So both parts spend a good amount of money. And the point I also see a lot on many posts highlighting this problem - women get paid less in most nations to start with. I know in the US it's like that. So yes. Yes, the problem is going to need rules and legislations. That is the first step. We can't force people to think a certain way, unfortunately, but some problems can be legally fixed.
True, those male razors would NEVER work on a woman's legs. You forget that if men happen to like pink plastic, then they ALSO suffer that "woman tax". Why people choose the more expensive option when, like you say, it's the exact same product is beyond me.
@It's Caturday: thanks for bringing in the economic terms.
Continuing on Nini: we cannot change societal deficies by forcing everyone into laws and rules. Unequal payment is a topic without doubt, but a highly disputed unfortunately, since most studies have bias in either direction. If a women puts money into getting pretty before a date, does that justify the man "compensating" for this financially in a way? I believe not. I believe that we a society should stand together and be social where true inqequalities exist. For example, for biological reasons it is the woman who get the children. Thus, it is right to have unisex health insurance, even though that means that men pay more. Arguing with "hardships of life" soon becomes problematic. If men should pay more on certain things because they do not need feminie hygiene products, should men with quick growing facial hear then pay less than those with slow growing hair, because the latter will save money for razors? Do you get my point?
100% certified BULLSHIT... first of all the "gender pay gap" of "women getting paid less" is a MYTH and a LIE. women don't get "paid less" than men. if a woman and man have the same job... they will get paid the SAME. the lie that "women make 70 cents for every 1 dollar a man makes" doens't take into account 1) there are more MEN in the workforce (some women are still stay at home moms.) 2) women take more time off than men. (maternity leave for instance.) 3) women take jobs with more comfortable working conditions and less physical labour, trading off comfort for higher salary... (how many guys work in a "nail salon"? how many Women work on a Construction site) 4) Men work MUCH HIGHER RISK JOBS which carry a higher salary... (90% of work place deaths are men.) so do the salaries of all the working women "make less" than ALL the working men? Yes because there are more men working more phsyically demaning, more dangerous, higher paying jobs, for longer hours. PERIOD.
Isnt he ruining his business by doing this? One would think men would avoid his store like the plague.
Well, there goes half of their business.
"with Clinton being such a woman and the other guy and his womanizing" I assume the "other guy" she's referring to is Bill Clinton, Mr. former womanizer in chief. This is beyond stupid, and why a lot of good causes end up loosing steam.
Every man walks past store. Good job.
"make a statement about gender discrimination" by discriminating based on gender.....the hipocracy continues!
Great way to lose half of your customers, love it!
Women's products do not even contain the same ingredients as men's products. They are NOT the same product, you can not compare them. It is no sexism here, it is simply more expensive to develop and produce a woman's product instead of a man's one. That's why they cost more.
What if guys want to buy women's products? Then what?
I wouldn't shop there then.
Nothing's more equal then ..not..being..equal. This can't be legal. I would never shop there
How about discounting women's products instead of upping men's products, which in the end is just giving the shop an extra 7% profit on men's stuff. Clever bit of marketing 😜
i like the vibe, but how did you compute that women stuff is 7% more expensive then men's? lipstick vs shaving razor?
Same brand deodorant for women vs men. Same brand shaving razor for women vs for men. etc That's how they determined it. However, this comparison is still stupid because, even if they are made by the same brand and are used for the same purpose they are NOT the same product. Women's products tended to have more ingredients in them (like deodorants) or more complex shapes (like razors) which makes them more expensive. And by my logic, that's fair.
Just lower costs for women 7%
What's the message? "We hate half our customers" ???
Leftist shit. Why don't they bring the women stuff discount instead of adding this artificial tax to men stuff? What if a woman buys men stuff or man buys women stuff?
Because they wanna make more money through sexist bullshit.
I believe this is illegal and would fall under discriminatory business practice.. The reason women's products generally cost more is because women are generally more willing to spend more money on lavender scented products in pink packaging, whereas men are generally less invested in beauty and hygiene products. Women are free to buy a cheap men's 7-in-one multiuse soap brick if they want to. This is just pithy, performative progressivism.
oh no, Bored Panda has turned into BuzzFeed
I don't get it. If it's too expensive for women, why raise the price for men instead of lowering it for women?
Let's force men to use expensive women cosmetic products...For equality of course..
Soooo in essence, the pharmacy is making 7% more than they should, per male customer, by covering it up as "awareness".
Wow! This is the most brilliant idea! Next tech stores should have a 10% tax on Non gaming consumers to show how expensive gaming peripherals are.
PC bullshit FASCIST SCUMBAG PHARMACY OWNER !
Not only the response this pharmacy is wrong, even the conclusions of the study conducted by the NYC consumer affairs department are bullshit. It is not true that women’s products cost 7% more than men’s. What are women's product and men's product anyway? It is pink products that are usually more expensive than blue products, because (some) people are willing to pay more for a pink product than they will pay for a blue product. But who says pink products are women's products?
Thats sexist and the company or store owner needs to be sued and in my opinion, put into a Gulag, to learn what tru socialistic behaviour is like.
Just sued, no gulag.
But true socialists always try to "educate" people, they just can't stand peoplethe way they are.
Crazy feminists strike again
Okay but if you do this men have to make more so STFU about pay inequality.
No. The "7% men tax" isn't even a tax. In that store, the men are paying the market rate, and the women are paying 7% less. Also, men DO make more. For every pound a man makes, a woman in the same job makes 78 pence. And, if you get two of what is pretty much the exact same product, except one of them is marketed as "for women" and the other "for men", the womens one will almost always cost more.
"pretty much the exact same product" is NOT the same product.
Awesome! Now all those Dads, Husbands, Sons and Brothers can have less money to spend on their Daughters, Wives, Moms & Sisters! Well thought out!
TL;DR will explain it to you https://youtu.be/8HEr8zmVEZQ
THANK YOU! I was looking for this video.
So they are using a "Study" and :Clinton being such a woman and the other guy and his womanizing" as a way to be stupid and punish those that simply want to buy and not care your opinion of a study on what products cost more or less. Some people just want the attention regardless of the stupidity they provide.
The wage gap is a myth
Links and proof, please.
The fact that is is ILLEGAL to pay anybody differently for the same work for any reason. If you are getting stiffed then take the person to court. How in the world do you think that something like a "Wage Gap" would even exist in 2016, it's literally been 96 years since the women's rights movement ended. Also, be a responsible person and do the research yourself.
The wage gap is just the average earnings of a man vs a woman's. It does not account for different job positions, hours worked, skills etc. Therefore, the wage gap is a myth because it was determined based on incorrect logic.
where's the link that it is true?
no, women don't make less than a man, this whole "women make $.70 on a mans dollar" is BS and has been proven to be false over and over again, yet people are so brainwashed, they will keep repeating it because they have this preconceived idea that, whatever they do, women will always be the victims (in the west, this is not the case) The wage gap is the average of both men and women all across the board, it does NOT take into account the hours worked, how many vacations and leaves the person takes and what the job position is. Don't believe everything you read and watch on the media.. It's dangerous. http://fortune.com/2016/04/12/myth-gender-wage-gap/ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=58arQIr882w http://dailycaller.com/2016/04/12/equal-pay-day-revisited-why-the-gender-pay-gap-is-still-a-myth/

Two weeks later... Pharmacy has "going out of business" sale. Tax free for all!
Ha - I always thought that women should get a 17% discount on things because that's how much less women earn.
hi.. And anybody should count how much of the resources feeding to the system males an how much females...
This just makes us ladies look like we need "extra help in life" WE ARE JUST AS GOOD AS ANY OTHER MAN!!!
Why not raise both if you want to fight sexism.. lmao
FILTHY FEMINISTS They should all burn and this store should get torched down.
This isnt pursuing equality, this is pursuing supremacy.
the only message i see is racism and discrimination...well done!
Offcourse it's sexist. But the message is that as the store is sick, so is the system.
https://youtu.be/CoCQFJxeHr4
The comments section is SO polarising! I don't even know what to think anymore. So discombobulated!
If there issue is that women's PRODUCTS cost 7% more then why are they taxing men? Surely it would make more sense to add the tax to men's products rather than arbitrarily charging men more just because they are men, what if the man is out buying products for his wife? Women do tend to buy more products than men, so you'd think that they would be cheaper, but it doesn't work like that, women want these products more so will pay more for them, it's supply and demand, it's capitalism, it sucks!
Interesting. I was watching Dr. Oz and they did a shopping comparison. Women's products, even though they have the same exact ingredients on the average pay $1.00 more per product that they buy.
I have never seen a men's product that had the same ingredients as a woman's product. Please give examples, I'm seriously interested in that.
How is it sexist if they're trying to make sure that both genders are charged equally
They are not charged equally because the products are not the same. That's why it's sexist.
