Woman Receives An Accidental Email From Her Potential Employer Calling Her ‘Not That Cute’

Writing emails is a more stressful task than it should be: just one wrong click and so many things can go wrong. What is more, emails are more often used for business and at work, so it’s not like making a typo in a message for your friend. That’s why people typically are more attentive and think over the way they say things more.

A business owner got involved in a very unpleasant situation just because he sent an email to the wrong person. Not only did he get the addressee wrong, but the message itself was unprofessional and shouldn’t have been written at all. The addressee was a 21-year-old girl and in the email she was called ‘not that cute.’

More info: TikTok

A girl applying for a job received an email that wasn’t meant for her and in it, the VP of the company said she is “not that cute”

The girl’s name is Gracie Lorincz, she is from Michigan and she recently graduated. So she went to apply for a brand representative job at Ava Lane Boutique, which is a clothing store. But the answer she got was not supposed to reach her and, to be honest, shouldn’t have existed in the first place.

Gracie shared the contents of that letter in a TikTok video that now has 2M views and 303k people liked it, but mainly to support the girl, not because they agreed with what was said in it.

The email read, “This girl is fresh out of college (Hope college) and not that cute. She applied to the sales model position. Are you sure you want me to interview her?”

The part that was inappropriate, hurtful to Gracie and outraged people was the vice president of operations and the husband of the boutique’s owner, Chuck DeGrendel, saying that she is “not that cute.”

Gracie posted the letter on her TikTok account and 1.3 million people were interested to see what it said

The email and the comment were meant for his wife Laura, the owner of the company, but somehow mistakenly reached Gracie. What is ironic is that the clothing company’s motto, according to Gracie, was “Beauty through confidence” and these kinds of remarks don’t fit the belief they should have. In fact, now on their Instagram, you can find that their motto is “Confidence through fashion.”

Bored Panda reached out to Gracie to ask a few questions, but she was not up to an interview right now. Instead she said that her intent with the video “was simply to call out bad behavior and to encourage individuals to stand up for themselves.” She also added, “I don’t want to prolong the narrative. […] I want to spin this situation into a positive one.”

In response to the TikTok video, Chuck and his wife apologized on Facebook live

In response to Gracie’s video, Chuck and Laura went live on Facebook and the VP apologized for his inappropriate words. He said “I didn’t feel she was that cute. So I didn’t know if I wanted to proceed with an interview. I don’t know why I said that, but I did, and I am very sorry for saying that.”

Both Chuck and Laura were talking with tears in their eyes that many people in the comments couldn’t let slip as they were convinced they were fake. They also thought that it was manipulative for Laura to say “I’m pretty sure the girl who Chuck has apologized to didn’t mean to, when she asked her followers to contact us, to threaten our family, the families who work here. I’m pretty sure that was not her intention, but that’s what happened.”

Here you can watch the full recorded Facebook live in which Chuck and Laura talk about the situation

Video credits: kristen simmons

It seems that Gracie didn’t expect to reach so many people with her video and that they would defend her so actively. That’s why in the comments of the video, she asks viewers not to bother Chuck’s family. Also, one of the commenters noticed, in the viral video, that she didn’t ask anyone to contact him or his family in the first place.

In Gracie’s video, you can see that the email really upset the girl, even though she didn’t really say much

@ggggmoneyyyy:))))) feeling amazing ##greenscreen ##foryou ##foryourpage ##CompleteMyLook ##FriendsReunion ##rentfree♬ original sound – gracie

Video credits: gracie

What do you think of the email and the internet’s reaction to it? Do you think that people are treating Chuck and his wife too harshly and do you believe their apology was sincere? Another thing to think about is whether bosses looking for people for a brand representative have the right to make remarks about their looks. Let us know how you see the situation in the comments!

Most people seemed to support Gracie and condemned the owners for being insensitive in that email

I just watched the husband and wife try to tone down this mess they are in. I am angrier at the wife for trying to accuse the applicant of asking the public to post negative comments about them, their business, and involve their children. The applicant did NOT do this. The wife is trying to steer the anger off of them and back on the applicant. She, of course, plays the " children being threatened" card. That tore it for me. Husband deeply regrets what he did because he knows very well what his wife has in store for him. He's sorry for what he said, sorry for sending it to the applicant, and sorry that he got found out. I think he's a sorry excuse of a man. His show of remorse was sadly lacking. My gut feeling about this couple is not good. The wife is a " Karen", and the husband is a sniveling wimp. He is receiving his punishment for the rest of his life. His wife will make sure of that.

First of all people shouldn't threaten anyone no matter what, that's just wrong. Second thing is I like to welcome "cancel culture" criers to the concept of free market and capitalism. People needs to realize and understand that so called "Cancel culture" is just free market at work. If people don't like you for some of your action they will spread why thru word of mouth to like minded people and they will spread it further. Free market will weed out businesses that customers don't agree with. If you don't adapt with market you will be removed from market.

All she did was post what he wrote in context. So how is that threatening his family? It would be just as accurate to say that he caused the threats to his family. The people most in the wrong are the threateners, followed closely by the blamers.

This is so odd.. But she had to send photos... so it seems like appearance is part of the job, no? Also, he didn't say fat or ugly... just not that cute. I'm sure it stung, but it was pretty minor.... and the apology made the whole thing worse.

It was the fact that he didn’t want to let her have a chance at the job because she wasn’t that cute. Basically, she applied for a job and he said ‘I don’t want to interview her because she’s not that cute’

Why can't people just make a proper apology? Here, let me write it for him: "I made a comment that was inappropriate, especially in light of our company's stated values of beauty and fashion inclusiveness. While it was an accident to send my insensitive comment to the applicant, doing so was inexcusably careless of me. I sincerely apologize, and I promise to do better in the future." Instead, he started by doubling down on his opinion that she's not cute. It's non-apologies and "yes, buts" like this that fuel the type of activism that people deride as "cancel culture."

What is a brand representative? Like some Dior model? Then you have to look cute and perfect. What's the big deal? If he said she looked cute, he'd be a creep. It's a dumb thing to say, but who cares. Throw it on internet, apologies, absurd.

I think it might be a little different if the company weren't trying to brand itself as some kind of inclusive, "beauty is just a mindset" kind of vibe. Lots of companies are out there trying to jump on the social awareness bandwagon when their values and business practices don't really reflect that.

First of all they pay minimum wage. The boutique isn't that cute. Do they think they're getting Victoria secret models. The couple that own the store aren't models why aren't they living up to the standard they set for very young women? And that's only his stupid opinion which doesn't seem to be worth much considering hes not living up to his own standards as the brand owner and face of the company along w the wife. The wife lying is a poisonous move so that shows you right there who she is and his email and fake apology shows you who he is. What a toxic little company to work for. Who the hell would want to put up w either of them for part time minimum wage and you have to buy their clothes to work there. Wtf you're basically paying them

a) their apology is like a hostage video b) he’s only sorry he got caught & he’s not daft hence he knows this is gonna impact his business & its future heavily. c) young woman posted it as she was upset & wanted people to rally around her for support which I get as it was a horrible thing to experience to be called essentially not that attractive. d) dude needs to look in a mirror it astonishes me how many people who are average or below average in looks talk shite about other peoples looks as if they are supermodels. The dude looks like a piece of cutlery from Beauty & the Beast that got turned back into a human.

I was denied job several times because I was "too old" (I was around 40 at the time), as software developer, no less. Plus, many ads for developers jobs have actual age limits, usually "no older than 35" because they want to brag they have "young dynamic teams" and it's enforced in media that software developers are hip and young. It goes everywhere and there is nothing we can do about it. I don't think shaming on media will help, they will just get sneakier and find "other reasons" why are you not good for the job. This society is super cruel.

That totally sucks. But in this case the owners do not brag about having only cute employees but their motto is inclusion and equal opportunities for beauty. In that light his comment is completely out of all lines. I am not saying it was okay to be declined for your age (it is outrages) but you kind of do not expect to declined based on your level of beauty when they claim the confidence is all that matters…

Why did she have to send in photos of herself for the application process for a sales position? A freaking SALES position, that I'm sure doesn't pay much more than minimum wage. This video of the husband and wife is so fake.. and..... he's not even CLOSE to cute.. to spin it back to the young lady and try to put the blame on her is infuriating..

First of all, why do you give so much power to someone you don't even know? Why do you think his opinion is important? Second, so what if he doesn't "think" you are "cute"? Third, you are not six years old, this is not a playground and you are not going to go through life with a "like me" card. Is your ego really so fragile? My motto [one of them] is "the dogs bark, but the caravan moves on." Don't stop and listen to the braying of the jackasses, ignore it and live your life.

He didn‘t want to interview her because she wasn’t cute enough and fresh from college. That’s why his opinion is important - because he judges based on looks rather than giving her a chance. Because he and others like him could prevent her from getting a job because she doesn’t meet their beauty standards. What kind of mindset is that?

The only thing he regrets is getting busted. Neither of them clearly has any concept of how wrong this is. Besides, it's not like either of them would be winning any beauty prizes -- and when it comes to inner beauty, we're talking bottom of the barrel. They certainly don't deserve getting threatened or harassed, but boycotted? Hell yeah.

What he did is wrong. Women are subjected to this daily and it needs to stop. Women's job qualifications are frequently based on their looks, their weight, and their age. I am an older woman and look about 15 years younger than my actual age. I went for a custmer service interview and was hired on the spot. I had to show my I.D. to prove citizenship. The guy ( who happened to be around my age) looked at my I.D. birth date and said to me " oh your an old one eh" By the time I arrived home there was a voicemail on my phone stating I did not get the job. AFTER filling out all the paperwork and being told I was hired. AND him flirting with me the entire time. Men do not have to go through this crap.

She's super cute, but I can see why he thought she didn't have the look he wanted to sell his expensive clothes. He should have just said "She doesn't have the right look". He's looking for someone more like his wife, this girl has a more natural cuteness that doesn't need expensive clothes/makeup.

Sounds like she has had a lucky escape working for those people. They should judge someone worthy of a job based on their qualifications and abilities and maybe a little wether their personality would fit, not what they look like. She looks like a perfectly nice young lady to me but what do I know I'm just an old granny lol.

I think that this man isn't very cute and he still gets to be part of the business. I think his standard is cuteness ( for women) and he got caught. I also wonder if Hope College, being a private Christian college plays any part. I also think that cuteness is a thing for the owner/his wife because he wouldn't have asked if it wasn't. Wonder how cute she is? Couple of jerks right here.

Brand representative is a fancy name for customer service. So she should not have been turned down based on her look. This job requires professional appearance-tidy, clean, friendly look. That is it. A company with a motto “Beauty through confidence” should be the last one to measure attracktivness in anyway. The hypocrisy of theirs is just astonishing. They are not any Victorias Secret, they pay minimum wage, the employee must buy their clothes but yet they expect to get an experienced person with Cara look for the job. Lol

Thinking of someone as "cute or not" is very subjective and an owner has all the right to choose it's employees. Have you ever heard of sympathy and antypathy? He did not mock her nor did he call her names, he just stated his opinion, and also DID NOT say directly NO. Yes, he should have double checked who he's sending the mail, but COME ON! What if someone doesn' think you are CUTE? Hell, some may think one or another is in fact ugly. Is it necessary to be so offended and try to ruin someone's business? Great, now you have people's sympathy, but also, be aware that this kind of act could possibly ruin your chances for next jobs. Just stop being so entitled and stop begging for people to like you, there are 7 billion other people who could like you. That's life.

Oh boy. She's fresh out of college and got turned down for a position that actually will be based somewhat on looks. It's tough to get told this, but it's life. She better learn to deal with it. Probably wasn't the best situation, but she's going to have a lot more rejections in her life and they won't all be perfectly done. Also, wonder if future employers might see this and not interview her simply because they don't want the drama that might come with her.

It is not related to look as it is customer service and I do not think she is this sour about being called “not that cute” but because this is a comment you do not expect to receive from a “Beauty through confidence” company. Moreover if her chance to get the job was declined due to that. And only because of that. They could have met and had a talk but he did not even wanted to meet with her solely because of the way she looks. I think that future employer would be scared only if he/she considers to be this parody to a man. Any decent person is able to evaluate that there were many missteps on the side of the owners. Especially that fake apology with lying and victim-playing.

This has gotten ridiculously, insanely out of hand!!!! What happened to the days when something like this would be chalked up to a guy, in this case a company, being an a**hole and everyone just moved on. Subjectively speaking the email was not wrong. I'm sure there are plenty of people, men and women who agree with the assessment in this email. Again, not wrong because it was an opinion, people are allowed to have them. Could it have been more tactfully written, absolutely!!! Using the internet as an attack dog to rip a company/family to shreds online and potentially in real life is worse than the perceived crime committed.

He's looking for someone more like his wife, this girl has a more natural cuteness that doesn't need expensive clothes/makeup.

Sounds like she has had a lucky escape working for those people.
