The number of babies born in the US in 2018 fell to the lowest level in 32 years, according to a 2019 report by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. The numbers indicate an ever-growing trend of more and more young people, especially millennials, opting for a childfree lifestyle.

Even though the joys of growing a child are undisputable, skipping parenthood may often seem an appealing decision to millennials who face college debts and enormous costs of living. Instead, many opt for the freedom of traveling, experiencing things, and cherishing their personal independence.

But in order to find out why exactly so many people make the decision of a childfree life, we have to look at what these people have to say themselves. So we rounded up some of the most illuminating tweets on the joys of life without kids that will surely give everyone a lot to think about.

To find out more about why some people opt not to have kids, Bored Panda reached out to Amy Blackstone, professor of sociology at the University of Maine and the author of “Childless by Choice: The Movement Redefining Family & Creating a New Age of Independence.

Amy explained that people opt out of parenthood for both internal and external reasons. In terms of the internal, “research shows that common reasons include a desire for autonomy, an interest in spontaneity, and a preference to nurture relationships with partners and others in their life.”

Another interesting finding according to Amy is that childfree people cite concern about the environment, concern over the state of world affairs, and concern for the children who are already here. “Increasingly, I'm hearing from childfree people that environmental concerns top their list of reasons for opting out of parenthood,” she said.

I am a middle age child free man who has had a vasectomy. I noticed there is a lot of misconceptions around vasectomy's . Many men are scared of them but I can tell you its the best thing I have ever done and I wish I did it sooner, its transformed my sex life, taken away any worry of accidents and is really no big deal . Any man that already has kids or like me does not want them I cant recommend it enough.

People don't seem to have a problem with infant circumcision, so there's definitely a precedent for taking away a person's choices before they can consent.

@Aaron Dettmer, a fetus is just a clump of cells. That's it. It's not a living being since it hasn't been born. Abortion is not murder. I'm so sick of having to explain this to people like you. Abortion isn't even about the baby, it's about the mother. It's her decision if she wants to have an abortion. If she doesn't want one, then that's totally fine, at least she was given the option to have an abortion. Besides, if people like you really cared about a fetus, then how come you don't seem to care about what happens to the kid after they're born?

Vasectomies cant always be reversed. The longer you wait, the less likely it is it'll work. Freeze your sperm before you get one. Vasectomies are often referred to as Permanent Male Contraception. I really want to get one, but its not some easy thing to turn off. Theyre usually quick and painless, just know if you do it 10 ago and now you want kids, you might not get any. Freeze your sperm!

Not everyone wants kids. They shouldn't be targeted for that. It is harder when someone who doesn't want kids has kids. As soon as something goes wrong people pay out on them.

Why go thru 2 surgeries [at least one] when there's this great invention called condoms during the wk after counting w/the rhythm method [when u ovulate is the wk you conceive]. Women have birth-control pills which shouldn't be taken after 15 yrs of swallowing these hormones. Doctors are always advising us to "stay out of the hospital"~~people get sick there from viruses & bacteria...even goo from water in flowers patients don't change. Bring plants instead, people.

Not entirely true. Or at least not easily or cheaply so. My doctor made a point to tell me before I got mine that it would be about $15k to have it reversed and still wasn't a guarantee.

Vasectomies cant always be reversed. I looked into it. I am thinking of getting one for this reason. The longer you wait to get it reversed, the less likely it is to work. You are better off freezing sperm than getting it reversed.

When I was younger I had to create a futuristic world and I wrote that all girls got injected with something that prevented pregnancy, but they could reverse it later to have their child. Oh, how that is problematic.

This is just trying to justify abortion for the convenience of the mother. It's a human child growing inside of that womb. Nothing anyone says will change that. Abortion kills babies. Make any zygote, clump of cells, parasite argument you want. It's a human life and abortion ends it.

When asked about the kinds of joys that childless life can bring, Amy confessed she was happy to hear the question.

Amy, who leads a happy childfree life herself, said that “One of the most common myths about childfree people is that we live sad, lonely lives. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

“People without children report that they enjoy nurturing the bonds they share with their partners and friends, that they feel fulfilled by having the time and resources to give back to their communities, and that they appreciate the freedom to pursue a wide variety of interests, passions, and hobbies.”

children are EXPENSIVE, it's beyond me to think that people have more than one of them. AND you have to keep spending to care and nurture them until they are matured and ready for the world on their own. based on the culture you are raised from, that could range from 18y or until they have a stable job and/or married themselves.

Yes!! I never understand this. I once literally had a woman tell me I needed to have kids as soon as possible, then she spent the next ten minutes moaning about her kids and how she wished she'd never had them?! I thought that was pretty....weird.

I love this saying. For years, I've had to put up with: "When are you going to have kids?", "You're not?", "Why not? You'd be a great mom", "What's wrong with you?", "Everyone has children", and "You must be the most selfish person on earth". Nope, I'm just self-aware.

This is SO annoying. I was told this so many times ! I wanted to be sterilised in my 30's, but they wouldn't do it, as I "might change my mind, as I had just gotten married". Never mind that we were both 37 and had never wanted children !! So I just kept taking the pill constantly so I wouldn't have a period, couldn't bear them !
