I like the way they use reading to reduce the sentences of the prisoners with an activity that can help them in the long run. (The reading, not necessarily the book report writing.)

Every fact we stumble across on social media has to be taken with a pinch of salt, so that's why we must fact check it. You see, whether it's COVID-19, climate change or migration — fake news spreads six times faster on social media than facts. Those pieces of disinformation, known as fake news, are harmful. They are partially or often completely false and deliberately disseminated to influence political views or generate as many clicks as possible.

The danger of fake news is the fact that to an untrained eye, the average internet user, it’s very difficult if not impossible to separate it from credible information. To find out how exactly we can separate true facts from false information, Bored Panda spoke with Daniel Markuson, the cybersecurity expert at NordVPN, who shared some very useful tips and insights.

While there is no foolproof method to separate truth from misinformation, a general rule of thumb is to check the source’s credibility, Daniel said. “This particularly applies to social media platforms because they are optimized to increase engagement and lack appropriate gatekeeping features that filter out misinformation.”

“It is also important to weigh the claims against other sources. If a publication makes monumental claims that are exclusive to that platform, do not take them at face value,” he added.

When it comes to determining if the news source is credible, Daniel said that sometimes unreliable news sources impersonate well-known ones by misspelling their names in the URL. “Similarly, they might use unconventional domain extensions instead of the usual “.com” or “.org.” In general, make sure that your news comes from established, well-known sources. These types of outlets get information directly from primary sources and must uphold their reputation.”

If you’re still not sure, Daniel suggests looking into the author, researching them, and making sure their credibility is up to par. “It is also important to weigh our own perception and not let our biases skew our understanding of events. Seek out differing opinions and try not to associate facts with ideological dogma.”

I’ve never seen this picture and I’ve got to say, this is F***ing scary as s***. Like, there is absolutely no question as to this lion’s intention and it really strikes me that humans can read faces of different species so well; and also that the exact same expression can be read on the face of a human. That’s probably part of why I found it so scary. It reminded me of a human. “Here’s Johny!”

When asked about the reasons why fake news has become so widespread, the cybersecurity expert said that it’s “due to factors that concern both the content of the messages and the technological foundation of platforms on which the news is proliferated.”

“Fake news is usually related to current affairs and makes remarkable, emotion-inducing claims. This, combined with the fact that social media platforms collect data on what kind of posts users spend the most time on and feed them content with similar characteristics, provides the perfect conditions for the spread of misinformation,” Daniel concluded.

Yes this irked me too. If there's one thing I know about 'psychology' it's that it is the most nebulous and dynamic and inexact science that exists. Not that it's bogus or unscientific, just that it has a trillion variables no matter how hard you try. I'm guessing they meant to say 'one study found..."

I'd like to see this study, and what factors are involved, because my first thought was that it depends on the culture. Growing up in Ireland, it was the done thing to do these things with friends, though not unheard of to do them alone. However, in Japan, going to the cinema or a restaurant alone is commonplace.

I usually prefer doing a lot of things by myself. I’ve done things with friends and SOs in the last that turned out to be miserable for me, because I was prepared to thoroughly enjoy myself, and the other person proved to be a killjoy. Why do people even travel to cool and exotic places if they’re going to spend the entire day doing and eating the same s**t they do and eat at home—-then have the nerve to insist everyone else do the same, and get all pissed off if everyone else decides to just go enjoy themselves all by themselves? Yeah, unless you’re with someone who can have your kind of fun anywhere (like, I’m not a big drinker and all night party animal, and prefer good clean fun and learning new things instead), it’s better to just go by yourself.

I used to like going to a restaurant alone with a good book(pre COVID). It never occurred to me that it took any sort of "power." Meanwhile, I'm no great success by any measure in life. This is such an odd claim to make. Not everyone feels the same way about any one activity you can name.

I wouldn't go quite that far. I've always enjoyed taking myself out on dates, just as much as I enjoy doing things with my husband, I wouldn't call myself fearless, more like I don't give a crap. I don't care what people think of me and I don't like being a pushover. Then again, my sister has always said people who go out alone are losers and was shaking all over when she had a minor confrontation with one of her coworkers outside of work while I stood there rolling my eyes, reminding myself to let the 30 year old woman fight her own battles. Meanwhile due to nerve damage in my right leg I'm terrified to work a full time job because I don't want to make the damage worse.

I like going alone or if you want to go watch a movie & everyone is busy why not go anyway ? Even fast food if you don't want to eat in the car and rather sit at the table why do you need other ppl to eat with you? . Although saying that you might get an adorable little girl wanting to eat with you in a a fast food place because she feels sorry you're alone but you're an introvert who didn't want eat in the car and spill something . So glad her & her mom didn't - not everyone is lonely .

I get bored if I don't read on laptop or watch something when I eat and that's a bit hard in a restaurant... For those who misunderstand, this doesn't mean you're PHYSICALLY or even financially capable of doing anything, just that you're psychologically centered enough to do things on your own, which implies a certain amount of independence and confidence (which can help you accomplish things.)

Could not agree more. Didn't think that when I was younger but once I hit 25yrs old (26yrs ago) I realized that It is okay to go to these place's alone. To not care what others will think. It shows you are secure in yourself, comfortable in your own skin, and enjoy spending time with yourself all alone. My wife and I live in different state's. I see her every weekend but we both cherish the time we spend alone. We both need it right now. And honestly it makes our relationship much better and stronger.

......they say that bc psychologist believe the human race needs social interaction to thrive.....we don't....if you can do things by urself, ur some kind of special person, ur not, introverts are thought of as s mental disease bc we have figured out how to live life without having to have help. I'm an introvert of 66 yrs n I've done everything I've needed to do by myself, honesty I know two truths, introverts are the strongest mental people ever n psychologist are the weakest

Just spoke with my mom about this very thing at 2:30am this morning. We all do this but when it is over such little things that are easily resolved or are in the process of being handled it will enhance anxiety, stress, and depression. It is not worth it. We only have one shot at life and why let smaller b******t take you out.

Well they found out a lot of the centenarians are actually people who died and whose families never reported it to keep collecting pensions. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-pacific-11258071

Unlike religious fundamentalists want people to believe bisexual behaviors are extremely normal in nature. Exclusively gay individuals are more rare but they also exist.
